It was, in fact, one of the pioneering art forms in the country. Philippine sculpture, which started with the pre-Hispanic practice of carving anitos in wood, stone, or molded in clay, underwent a series of modifications in terms of subjects and materials. To this day, artists have experimented with glass, brass, and even ice sculpting. Michael Cacnio is one of the most celebrated Filipino sculptors of this era. Born in 1969, Cacnio probably witnessed the evolution and development of contemporary Philippine sculpture. His sculptures, delicately made with brass, mirror his buoyant childhood in his hometown of Malabon. “I draw inspiration from my childhood. As the youngest of the family, I was very carefree and playful. I was always out on the streets of Malabon playing the latest popular games,” Cacnio shared in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer in October 2014. Like his vendor series, Mango Picker commemorates childhood’s carefree and frisky qualities. Here, Cacnio renders two boys picking mangoes, an activity kids enthusiastically engage in, especially in the provinces. One of the boys stands atop a rock while carrying and supporting his peer in picking mangoes. There’s also a basket on one side where they place their freshly picked fruits. Michael Cacnio’s sculptures evoke a sense of nostalgia and melancholia in the viewers—the nostalgic feeling of wanting to return to their cheery childhood and the melancholy feeling of time’s passing that prevents them from returning. Undoubtedly, he is a world-class sculptor who embedded his name in the industry with his social realist brass sculptures. (Jessica Magno)

His sculptures, a testament to his unparalleled talent, have accumulated multiple awards and acknowledgments globally and exhibited in various art spaces, museums, and galleries. Furthermore, Cacnio was the first and only Filipino artist to have a solo exhibit at the European Commission’s headquarters in Berlaymont, Brussels, Belgium. This work, featuring two horses engaged in a fierce battle, is devoid of Cacnio’s usual kids-at-play figures. Nevertheless, it still captures the essence of Filipino culture and tradition. It embodies the horse-fighting tradition—although prohibited—of the southern parts of the Philippines, especially during fiestas. Hence, this masterpiece serves as a poignant reminder of the country’s rich cultural heritage. When asked about his style, Cacnio explicitly described it as expressionism. “My sculptures emphasize the emotions attached to the daily activities and lives of normal people living in real communities. People can relate and these remind them of a similar character or happening in their own lives,” Cacnio shared in an interview with the Philippine Star in September 2011. His figures, with their emotional depth and Cacnio’s ingeniousness and mastery of his craft, evoke a deep connection with his viewers and Philippine culture. (Jessica Magno)

His works, which depict universal themes of parental affection, a cheerful childhood, and the resilience of the Filipino people, evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia that resonates with viewers from all walks of life. Cacnio’s 2000 brass sculpture, Mother and Child, is a poignant portrayal of parental love. The scene depicts a mother and her child, perhaps on a leisurely stroll in the market or park, clad in traditional Filipino attire. The mother is seen holding an umbrella, suggesting protection from a sunny day—a connotation of what a mother would do to safeguard her kids. The child, seemingly captivated by something, tugs at his mother’s hand, an implication of a child’s sweet innocence and perky attitude. This masterpiece showcases Cacnio’s exceptional brass work and his profound understanding of humanity and Filipino culture, cementing his status as a world-class sculptor A graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Fine Arts program, Cacnio started his artistic career as a painter but later found his true passion in brass sculpting. His works starred in various solo exhibits in Asia, Europe, and the US, and have been featured in broadcast media and publications. Michael Cacnio’s esteemed brassworks have garnered numerous awards and recognitions both locally and internationally, a testament to his artistic prowess. Subsequently, he received a TOYM award in the Arts/Sculpture category in 2006. Cacnio’s artistic journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of one’s true calling, inspiring artists and art enthusiasts alike. (Jessica Magno)

Exposed to the art of his father Angel Cacnio as well as the other eminent contemporary artists, Cacnio's awareness of the beauty of art began at a young age. Veering into the field of sculpture, Cacnio soon made a name for himself as he manipulated his medium (he often favors brass) into pieces that bleed with childhood nostalgia. Fisherman fits right in his oeuvre. Cacnio pays homage to his grandfather Flavio Cacnio who was a fisherman as he shapes brass to depict a lone fisherman, a basket on his side he leisurely reels in his haul. Here, Cacnio plays around with perspective, elongating the man's fishing rod and shaping the string into a soft swirl in the air. “In sculpture, there’s drama, a mood,” Cacnio says in a 2024 People’s Asia interview. “At the same time, in every angle, it’s tangible. A sculpture is three-dimensional and every angle of the artwork can converse with you.” Cacnio’s Fisherman is a perfect blend of childhood wonder and magnificent storytelling imbued with palpable intimacy. Through his usage of curves and straight lines, Cacnio emphasizes both the gracefulness of the fishermen and the strength they bear as they carry on their days, unbending in the face of trials. As the youngest of the family, I was very carefree and playful. I was always out on the streets of Malabon playing the latest popular games,” Cacnio once said in an October 2014 interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In this work titled Pampalamig, Cacnio depicts a boy blissfully flying his kite all the while running excitedly towards a “sorbetero” (ice cream vendor) to quell the heat of the afternoon sun. The work is seemingly a visual interpretation of Celeste Legaspi’s popular song “Mamang Sorbetero,” in which she sings the lines: “Mamang sorbetero tayo'y sumayaw / Kalembang mong hawak muling ikaway / Batang munti sayo'y naghihintay / Bigyang ligaya ngayong tag-araw” Cacnio’s intention of leaving the figures’ faces blank hints at a theme of universality; it evokes intimate affinity with the viewer, reminding us of the brevity of childhood, a sweet melancholia for the days of yore. Moreover, Cacnio reminds us to always honor the dignity and humanity of the vendors we encounter in our every journey. They are our unsung heroes who have always brought out the excitement in our inner (child-like) selves and fulfilled the urgent necessities—tangible or intangible—meant to pull us through the humdrum and vicissitudes of everyday living. Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Michael Cacnio (b. 1969) I Want More signed and dated 2008 brass and wood artwork: 31 1/4" x 5 1/2" x 5 3/4" (79 cm x 14 cm x 15 cm) with base: 40" x 7 1/2" x 6 3/4" (102 cm x 19 cm x 17 cm) Renowned contemporary sculptor Michael Cacnio is best known for his slice-of-life works in brass. With a fondness for the subject of the Filipino folk, his artistic practice seems a whimsically tactile takeoff from the rural folk of his father Angel Cacnio’s paintings. While his father drew inspiration from the collectivity of rural living by portraying fisherfolk, farmers, cockfights, and town festivities in his paintings that combine a classic Amorsolo-esque naturalism with an illustrative flair, Michael Cacnio singles out peripheral subjects that often camouflage themselves into the background of everyday life. Vendors, children at play, imagery of folk livelihood and the domestic are singled out to capture a more personal experience of the everyday in his work. These quotidian subjects, all too easily forgotten in passing, are far from monumental. And yet, in the works of Michael Cacnio, they become solidified in brass as little monuments evoking the nostalgia of Filipino childhood. Perhaps that is exactly the charm of Cacnio’s body of work—the childlike eyes through which he sees the everyday. There is always a playful exaggeration to his treatment of subjects that is ever present in the piece at hand. Here, however, the artist selects a more daring choice of subject—one that brings out a stronger social realist voice than is typically seen in a Cacnio sculpture. In place of the common folk, we see in this piece a stout man donning a large top hat. Seated on a comically tall chair, the man carries three gold bars and holds out a palm to the heavens, as if waiting for a blessing to come from above. Cacnio’s most favored subject, however, is not totally absent here. The caricature Cacnio makes of the greedy man recalls the whimsical humor of the folk that is epitomized by characters of the fool archetype (or the pusong) such as Juan Tamad and Juan Pusong in Filipino folktales. Similar to the stories of Juan Pusong where the titular character Juan mockingly outwits authority, I Want More possesses a subversive humor that can only come from the playful mind of the commoner with a humble stature, thus rendering the folk ever present despite their sculptural absence. Man in a Banca (Nature's Bounty Fishing Series) signed and dated 2006 brass 26 1/2" x 21 1/2" x 12 1/2" (67 cm x 54 cm x 31 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Michael Cacnio grew up in the 1970s in Malabon, a town with a strategic location that lay in proximity to Manila Bay and crisscrossed by the Navotas, Dampalit, Muzon, Tanza, Tullahan, and Polo Rivers. At a time when these rivers were still clean and navigable, fishing was the major source of livelihood for the town’s inhabitants. Fishponds also proliferated in Malabon, with the cultivation of bangus (milkfish) as a primary industry. Malabon owed the conduciveness of bangus farming to its fertile pond soils that naturally sustain food for the fish. This tranquil scene captivated the brush of no other than the master of the Philippine countryside, Fernando Amorsolo, immortalizing in his 1950 work titled Sunset Over Malabon Fishponds (now in the Adamson University Collection) an idyllic image of the fishing town. It is no wonder that Cacnio had also naturally gravitated to this former glorious image of his homeland, paying homage to its vibrant past in his “Nature’s Bounty Fishing Series.” In a 2014 Inquirer article titled “The Cacnio Legacy,” Cacnio shares that he had always drawn inspiration from his childhood. “As the youngest of the family, I was very carefree and playful. I was always out on the streets of Malabon playing the latest popular games,” Cacnio reveals. In Man in a Banca, from the artist’s “Nature’s Bounty Fishing Series,” one can easily imagine the boatman plying the rivers of Malabon or sitting in his firmly secured boat in the vast fishponds. He wears a beaming smile over his bountiful catch, much to his satisfaction of providing for another day’s sustenance and livelihood. Cacnio deliberately left the man’s face blank in a genuine homage to the generations of Malabonians who once sustained their everyday lives through fishing. Moreover, Man in a Banca is a poignant and nostalgic image not only of Cacnio’s childhood but of a fast-vanishing culture of sustainable livelihood. (A.M.)

I want it to have the power to move and inspire you,” says Cacnio in a 2014 Philippine Star article titled “Michael Cacnio’s life in brass.” In this piece from the artist’s Palipad (Children at Play Series), Cacnio depicts a boy playing with his kite, all the while gazing amazingly and ecstatically at how his kite has seemingly breathed a life of its own and flew off the vast expanse of the skies. Cacnio’s distinct brand of social realism is one that does not shy away from depicting the simple joys of living, be it in urban or rural areas. Remarks Cacnio in the same article: “My work is all about the daily lives of the Filipinos… Once people see my work, they are reminded of the past. By preserving it, I make people think back and recall past joy and happiness.” At first glance, Cacnio’s works may be deemed as simple and mundane. But it profoundly penetrates our memory and consciousness, enkindling in us the lost innocence of our childhood. Maybe this is why Cacnio’s works are that straightforward: they genuinely connect with the inner child in all of us and authentically capture a time when all was just simple and delightfully wholesome, at least in our minds as children constantly at play back then. Est: ₱400,000 - ₱520,000

Crucifixion signed and dated Angono, Rizal 1965 (lower right) watercolor on paper 19 1/4" x 14 1/2" (49 cm x 37 cm) Depictions of the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Christ abound in Carlos' Botong' Francisco's oeuvre. Ino Manalo writes in The Life and Art of Botong Francisco: "Botong often visited nearby towns to draw inspiration from their church art. To prepare for his own depiction of the Via Crucis, he immersed himself in biblical texts and the Holy Week senakulo. He seemed to find it a deeply spiritual experience, remarking afterward that any sinner would have a change of heart after working on the Stations of the Cross." Botong imparts a solemn aura to his powerful rendition of Christ's crucifixion. Here, the image of Christ evokes a palpable sense of arresting gesture that effectively shares with the viewer the final moments of the crucified Man's earthly life. Saprid depicts Christ in the Cristo Expirante (Expiring Christ) pose. His work evokes the passage in the Gospel of John that writes, "Jesus said, "I thirst." There was a vessel filled with common wine. So, they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit." (John 19: 28-30, New American Bible, Revised Edition). Veering away from the typicality of his works, Botong's composition in this watercolor piece is spare, inducing the viewer to engross themselves in the singular figure of the Crucified Christ. A spectral depiction of the Paschal Candle is seen on the left, symbolizing Christ's eventual triumph over death and the fulfillment of his promise of grace and eternal life. The candle gives credence to the ultimate sacrifice the Divine had enkindled to redeem humanity of its transgressions. It imbibes in Botong a kind of divine validation in his art, one that gives adoration to his Creator. (A.M.)

3 Musikeros signed and dated 2006 (base) brass 16" x 21" x 18" (41 cm x 53 cm x 46 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The streets of Metro Manila, albeit brash and chaotic at times, are filled with the effervescence of the Filipino masses. From these familiar scenes and people came a wellspring of creative inspiration for acclaimed brass sculptor Michael Cacnio. Growing up in Malabon during the 1970s, Cacnio enjoyed observing the sprawling view of the then-municipality from the rooftop of his grandmother’s house, from which he would catch panoramic glimpses of typical scenarios that almost every Filipino had grown accustomed to. In a 2014 Inquirer article titled “The Cacnio Legacy,” Cacnio reveals the foremost thing influencing his art. “I draw inspiration from my childhood,” Cacnio says. “As the youngest of the family, I was very carefree and playful. I was always out on the streets of Malabon playing the latest popular games.” Therefore, Cacnio’s foremost luminary and mentor is the spirit and temperament of his environs. In this particular piece, Cacnio depicts three kinds of musicians: a guitarist, a flutist, and a violinist. Like the typical Cacnio sculpture, their faces are deliberately left blank. Cacnio’s practice of blurring the line between familiarity and anonymity builds rapport between the subject of the artwork and the viewer. Even though we may not recognize the faces or expressions of the subjects, Cacnio’s end goal is to establish rapport with the people we encounter daily, effectively bringing out our innate humanity. In his distinct take on social realism, Cacnio effectively makes the audience find affinity even in the most mundane and ordinary. (A.M.)

Growing up as a child in Malabon in the 1950s, Michael Cacnio enjoyed observing the sprawling view of the then-municipality from the rooftop of his grandmother's house. There, he would occasionally witness the ordinary Filipino in their everyday routines—the magtataho repeatedly and tirelessly shouting in the morning the iconic "Taho!" while carrying two large buckets of the sweet delicacy; children playing native games under the heat of the sun; flocks of families enjoying a simple yet tender bonding; and all sorts of vendors busily earning a living. Cacnio's brass sculptures serve as creative and visual reminisces of his childhood neighborhood. His fascination with our native customs and traditions also stems from his father's works, Angel Cacnio, whose genre pieces reflect the heritage and values of Philippine folk living. The younger Cacnio's extensive body of work features an array of traditional Filipino figures, such as this piece titled Flower Vendor, depicting a woman holding a basket of flowers. The woman's lofty posture visually echoes the philosophical concept of dignity of human labor. Her face is deliberately left blank, exuding a feeling of impartiality that we can employ to establish rapport and commune with the people we encounter daily. (A.M.)

The form of the welded brass glimmers the joys of life so much that one cannot help but pause and contemplate the artist’s work. The art piece communicates and conveys motion and uninhibited childlike joy in the triumph of raising up your very first kite blowing freely in the wind later making it a hobby - an afternoon or weekend escape after a long day or a long week of work. Cacnio was able to give brass the space, the form and the substance to turn a man flying a kite into the essence of human bliss.

In this particular piece, he introduces an alert dynamism to the figure’s pose, whose outstretched leg balances on the boulder while the other bent leg is planted on the other side. The fisherman sculpture featured a richness of color attributed to the brass medium used. It conveys the eye with the soaring power of a monument as well as gives it a high note while it draws attention to the elegant and graceful form of the sculpted piece. Yet Cacnio’s sculptural practice lures us beyond the simple facts of height and width. The brass in his sculpture celebrates the richness of color like precious material. Brass gave his sculptures a bright high note as it draws attention to the exquisitely shaped form, not so much decorative but elegant and graceful form. The detail in this particular piece speaks volumes regarding Cacnio’s technical and conceptual skill. The woman’s face is poignantly rendered, giving her facial expressions a palpable sense of depth and humanity. While the unique motifs and patterns on her dress can be seen as a testament to Cacnio’s creativity given that it showcases both simplicity in form but complexity in skill.   There are times when sculpture seems to be so distant from its audience. In the case of Michael Cacnio, the opposite is true. His works are deeply personal and yet are a three dimensional celebration of the everyday to which the audience can easily connect to, which is why his works are sought for by collectors.

A pillar of social realism in Philippine sculpture, the brass master is largely inspired by Filipino values and traditions. It gives his sculptures a bright high note as it draws attention to the not so decorative but elegant and graceful form. Michael Cacnio (b.1969) Light of Knowledge signed and dated 2013 mixed media The widely disparate objects which constitute Michael Cacnio’s work have nothing in common except that they are parts of the whole art ensemble, their randomness is an essential part of this work. From a metal human figure reading a book to plumbing fixtures, found objects such as these derive their identity as art from the designation placed upon them by the artist and from the social context that comes with the object. Cacnio is a sculptor of Social Realist genre. This may be indicated by either its anonymous wear and tear (as in the plumbing components) or by its recognizability as a consumer item (as in the toy human). The context into which it is placed is also a highly relevant factor. His body of work features tableaux of characters taken from traditional Filipino archetypes delivered in his distinct signature style, revealing enduring truths about human nature and the community. The idea of dignifying commonplace objects in this way was originally a shocking challenge to the accepted distinction between what was considered “art” as opposed to “not art”.

In this depiction of a fisherman, for instance, Cacnio introduces an alert dynamism to the pose of the figure, whose outstretched leg balances on a makeshift ladder while the other, bent, is firmly planted on a boulder. With his rod upraised but tilted at an angle (with the line, curving in air, provides a thoughtful counterpoint), the fisherman grasps a just-caught fish that will join the rest in a basket already teeming with an abundant harvest. The humanity in the fisherman is credibly communicated by the form, which makes this work by Cacnio such a sight and joy to behold.
