Mother and Child Bronze h. 9-1/2 w. 8-1/2 d. 6 in. With signature to base It is included, on page 92, in the list of exhibitions of her work Doris Caesar by Martin H. Bush. Doris Caesar was one of the founding members of the Katonah Gallery when they first opened their doors on the top floor of the Katonah Village Library in June 1954. The members started a permanent gallery and sold works donated by the member artists to help fund their exhibitions. Many of these initial donors were artists whose names are prominent today.

Doris Porter Caesar (American, 1892-1971), Untitled (Standing Figure) patinated cast bronze, circa 1950, the base with incised artist signature "Caesar" and foundry stamp "Modern Art FDRY. / New York," an expressive tall, slender figure posed in an overcoat with arms raised, atop a square base. 53 3/4 in. Native New York figurative sculptor Doris Porter Caesar was born in Brooklyn. She studied drawing at the Art Student's League with the celebrated figurative artist and anatomy instructor George Bridgman (1864-1943), and later with the Ukrainian-American cubist sculptor Alexander Archipenko (1887-1964). Her first exhibitions were at Montross Gallery and Erhard Weyhe Gallery in New York City in the 1930s, where she became influenced by the German expressionist works of Wilhelm Barlach, Ernst Lehmbruck, and KÃ¤the Kollwitz. In the 1940s, her works incorporated a loose textural handling of form, with elongated figures in standing or seated poses. Later works often had smoother surfaces with a primary focus on the female figure. In 1957 and 1959, Caesar's works were included in two exhibitions at the Whitney Museum, the later exhibition titled "Four American Expressionists." Other Notes: A precocious talent, Doris Caesar began her artistic studies at the age of 16 under George Bridgman (1865-1943) at the Art Students League in New York. She was to later receive instruction from the Russian American sculptor Alexander Archipenko (1887-1964). Caesar's earliest works were slightly abstracted explorations of the nude female form, mainly composed of clay. In 1927, after casting her first bronze piece, she approached the influential Weyhe Gallery in New York City, which specialized in modern and expressionist art. The Gallery Director was immediately enthralled by the young artist and her work, and thus began an association which was to last decades. Inspired by German Expressionism, especially the work of Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945), Caesar began to experiment with the human form. Her textural figures became elongated, with intentionally distorted and exaggerated limbs. This new approach was immediately popular with collectors and critics alike.
