The watercolour of small format depicts a street scene with a warehouse in Folkestone, England. The composition seems slightly statically, but in the naivety of the formulated colours it is an extraordinary sheet with tranquil and amiable character. The sheet is titled ‘Folkstone, Kent’, and dated ‘July 1841’ on the reverse. The watercolour is mounted on a decorative passe-partout and framed. The following description is placed on the reverse of the sheet ‘Thomas Smith Cafe 1793-1841, Warehouse at Folkstone, 7‘‘ x 10‘‘ Signed on old mount. Inscribed & dated 1841 au verso. Provenance V 274’, as well as the gallery’s name ‘Gregory and Kruml, 9 Lancashire Court, New Bond Street, London, W. 1, 01-629 3017’. The work is, besides yellowed passe-partout paper, in a good age-appropriate condition. The total dimensions including the frame are 34 x 41 cm, and the sheet is 17.3 x 25.6 cm. Thomas Smith Café (1793 - ca. 1845) Thomas Smith Café was born in 1793. He was a British architecture, still life, landscape, portrait, and naval painter, who was specialised in watercolour techniques. His son, Thomas Café was also a successful painter, who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists from 1852 to 1855. Thomas Smith Café died in ca. 1845.
