PEDRO CAFFARO JAUME (Palma de Mallorca, 1866-1959). "Marina". Oil on panel. Signed and dedicated in the lower right-hand margin. Size: 17 x 23 cm; 26 x 31,5 cm (frame). Pedro Caffaro Jaume, of Italian origin but born in Mallorca, where he spent his whole life and career, devoted himself, throughout his career, both to portraits and landscapes, immortalising some of the most important figures of the island at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and numerous monumental and picturesque corners of the Majorcan geography. A painter of academicist realism. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palma, with professors such as Mestre and Anckermann. He painted a portrait of Antonio Maura and the Provincial Council gave him a scholarship to study at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, where he was a pupil of Sorolla, Vicente Palmerola and Juan Martínez Abades and copied works in the Prado Museum. He returned to Mallorca, where he was a Municipal Professor at the Public Schools and the Nautical School and was promoted to Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Palma in 1910 and 1920. He took part in numerous artistic competitions and held two major exhibitions: one at the Círculo Mallorquín (1927) and another at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Palma (1944), organised by friends, students and former students. In 1954 he was named Illustrious Son of Campos. He was also an art critic, characterised by his defence of academicism against noucentisme and avant-garde trends. In 1990 the town council of Campos del Puerto de Mallorca dedicated an important retrospective exhibition to him. His painting is rooted in the realist landscape tradition of the 19th century, but also incorporates some of the contributions of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, especially with regard to the atmospheric, luminous treatment of his works and the brushstroke.
