        B. 1965 BANANA PLANT 62 1/4 by 58 5/8 in. 158 by 149 cm signed and dated 1997 on the reverse oil on canvas EXHIBITED Beijing, Art Gallery of Central Academy of Art, Women and Flowers, 1997 LITERATURE Exh. Cat., Cai Jin, Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong, 2005, p. 53, illustrated NOTE Cai Jin was one of only two female artists to be featured in the seminal international exhibition China's New Art, Post-1989 in 1993. She first discovered the sensuous appeal of wilting banana plants in her grandparents' fields in 1991 and has since made them the inspiration of all her intensely sensuous work. Unlike most of her peers, Cai has steered cleared of ideological references, opting instead for a purely emotional and painterly experience. This work was exhibited in a female artists' exhibition Women and Flowers at the Art Gallery of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1997. Since 1998, Cai has been living in New York.
