A large Aldermaston pottery red lustre bowl, tin-glazed earthenware decorated in a red and gold lustre abstract design, various marks to base including artist monogram and symbol for 1974, overall condition is good with no sign of damage or restoration, 47.5 cm diameter QTY: (1) NOTE: Alan Caiger-Smith (1930-2020), studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and King's College, Cambridge. He trained pottery at the Central School of Art & Design in 1954 under Dora Billington. Caiger-Smith established the Aldermaston Pottery in West Berkshire in 1955. The pottery was a cooperative workshop of about seven potters making functional and domestic ware and tiles. Caiger-Smith revived and perfected tin glaze and painting on red earthenware clay. A technique adopted during the medieval Islamic period and also much later by the likes of William De Morgan, Pilkington's Royal Lancaster and others. The factory ceased production when it was sold in 2006.

          ALAN CAIGER-SMITH (ARGENTINIAN/BRITISH, 1930-2020) STUDIO POTTERY STONEWARE BOWL, deep form with notched rim, featuring a red-golden abstract Arabic-style design to exterior on white ground. Hand-brushed signature and other marks to underside. Second half 20th/early 21st century. 7" H, 12 1/8" D rim.  Catalogue Note: Alan Caiger-Smith was born in Buenos Aires in 1930. He arrived in London in the mid 1940s to study at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. In 1955, he founded Aldermaston Pottery, a cooperative workshop of about seven potters. Caiger-Smith became renowned for his tin-glazed earthenware with lustrous surfaces, inspired by the Near Eastern ceramic tradition. He died at the age of 90 in 2020.

In 1949, Caiger-Smith took up a scholarship at King’s College, Cambridge, to study history, switching to English. He continued to draw and paint whilst studying and sold his work. The 'Genii Cucullati' is a carving displayed at Housesteads Roman Fort, on the Hadrian's Wall and depicts cloaked figures from the early 3rd century. It is unclear of their significance, but possibly fertility figures, often seen in Romano-Celtic sculpture from this time.
