Philip Hermogenes Calderon RA (1833-1898) Philip Hermogenes Calderon RA (1833-1898) 'The Vine' Signed and dated lower right 'P H Calderon 1880' and numbered, titled and signed on the stretcher: 'No. 5 The Vine P H Calderon', oil on canvas 140 x 110cm Provenance: Bought from the artist by Sir John Aird, Hyde Park Terrace, London, and thence to his son Malcolm Rucker Aird, Woolton House, Newbury, Berkshire; Christie's, London, 1 May 1931, lot 14; Sotheby's, London, 24 October 1972, lot 67; Christie's, London, 16 March 1973, lot 39. Philip Calderon was born in Poitiers, France. Calderon planned to study engineering, but he became so interested in drawing figures and diagrams that he changed his mind and devoted his time to painting. In 1850, he trained at Leigh's Art School, London, then in 1851 he went to Paris to study under François-Édouard Picot. His first successful painting was called 'By the waters of Babylon' (1852), which was followed by a much more popular one called Broken Vows (1856). From the beginning he was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites; the artist Henry Stacy Marks was his friend and brother-in-law, and Calderon exhibited his portrait at the Royal Academy in 1872. Calderon became a leading member of the St John's Wood Clique, a group of artists interested in modern genre and historical subjects who were inspired, both artistically and socially, by the Pre-Raphaelites. Historical, biblical, and literary themes were common in Calderon's later work. His later paintings adopt a more classical style, comparable to Edward Poynter, which resulted from his close relationship with Frederic Leighton, then-President of the Royal Academy. Calderon became Keeper of the Royal Academy in 1887, and from then on worked to support the teaching of anatomy based on nude models at the Royal Academy Schools. His 1891 painting 'St Elizabeth of Hungary's Great Act of Renunciation' was secured by the Chantrey Bequest for the national collection, and is now located at Tate Britain.

London, Franco-British Exhibition, 1908, no. 342, lent by Mrs Charles van Raalte. The Royal Academy (1837-1901) Revisited, 1975-6, no. 8. NOTES The dignity and self control with which King Charles I met his death resulted in a martyrology without parallel in English history. Anxious not to shiver and appear afraid he wore two shirts to protect himself from the chill of the January morning. He then passed through Inigo Jones's Banqueting House, Whitehall, and under the Rubens ceiling which he himself had commissioned, and onto the scaffold. His last reported word to William Juxon, Bishop of London, who accompanied him to offer the last consolations of religion, was 'Remember'. Like other tragic heroes and heroines, Mary Queen of Scots, Montrose, Marie Antoinette and others, Charles I was a popular subject in Victorian painting. Indeed, commenting on Crofts R.A. exhibit of 1883, no. 1502, Charles I on his way to execution, Leslie Stephen, who had been reviewing for twenty-three years could not refrain from remarking wearily that 'it would be a relief could one hope that Charles I will not go to execution again'. However, it was recognised that in the present picture, Crofts had produced, as Sir Isidore Spielman noted, the 'climax to his Stuart cycle'. Several reviewers commented, not all favourably, on the dramatic nature of the composition. The Art Journal expressed surprise that 'In depicting an event of such tremendous moment, it would be imagined that the central group - composed of the Royal Martyr, his attendants and his executioners - would be so emphasised by its position and its rendering, as to attract all eyes. But no: the entire foreground is recognised by a seething crowd of armed men, while the protagonists of the historic drama are reduced to the dimensions and the importance of mere diminutive puppets'. And yet Crofts has depicted the scene as it would undoubtedly have been viewed by the troops: the crowd was allowed nowhere near the scaffold, and the sole Royalist in the picture, lower left, has a sword raised against him by the Roundhead officer. Commentators consistently praised such characteristic incidents in Crofts's work, as well as his skill in the rendering of armour. Crofts was a disciple of Meissonier, and like him specialised in the depiction of battle scenes. In addition to envisaging scenes from the English Civil War, he also depicted episodes from the Napoleonic and Franco-Prussian Wars. Several of his works are in public collections: The Evening of the Battle of Waterloo is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In 1898 he succeeded Philip Hermogenes Calderon as Keeper of the Royal Academy.

The Heatherley School of Fine Art: 150th Anniversary Exhibition, 1996, no. 47. NOTES Calderon describes the work in his unpublished manuscript, 'Painted with Roberson's medium - long, narrow picture - on the right a window with railings, candle light inside, and a frightened woman eagerly looking out - under window a smashed mandoline - in the centre - infuriated husband or brother, sword in hand, running at full speed after the musical but cowardly lover, who is clean around the corner, on the left, flying for his life - down a moonlit street.' The painting was well-received by the critics when exhibited at the RA in 1873. The Art Journal commented 'Wherein the serenader has taken to flight leaving his guitar and one of his shoes, being pursued, sword in hand, by the father, lover or brother to whom he was been paying delicate attention. The incidents are so well set forth that every point is intelligible'. It was also mentioned in 'Academy Rhymes', a regular feature in Punch, As for his Victory and Serenade - In neither is the point of the subject miss'd: The story's clear, characters well portrayed What's CALDERON, if not a dramatist? 'Victory!' was also exhibited at the RA in 1873 (no. 215) and depicts a castle with the enemy fleeing and a crowd of women and children cheering after a battle. Born in Poitiers, France, Calderon was largely educated by his father until his entry into J.M. Leigh's Art School, London in 1850. In 1851, he moved to Paris to study under the French Academic painter, Picot. This is pronounced in the markedly French flavour of this painting. In 1866 Calderon exhibited Her most High, Noble and Puissant Grace at the Paris International Exhibition where it won a gold medal, the only medal that year awarded to an English artist. The same year he was made a Royal Academician and a year later he was appointed Keeper of the Royal Academy. He was a member of the St John's Wood Clique Art which met every Saturday to draw a given subject which was submitted for a routine examination by other members of the group. Calderon's most famous work Broken Vows also concerns the theme of blighted affections but neither have the sentimentality frequently seen in Victorian paintings of this subject. There is an almost farcical nature to this dramatic incident in Calderon's use of props: the broken mandolin, the hastily discarded shoe and the candlelit window, items not unfamiliar to the commedia dell'arte. The consciously theatrical situation shows his affinity with the pantomine duels of Pierrot and Harlequin that were enjoying great popularity in France at the time. In 1857, Jean-L‚on G‚r“me and Thomas Couture had both painted duel scenes. Calderon's painting owes more to these French academic painters and the contemporary French theatre than to his English counterparts who were producing comparatively humourless interpretations of such an episode. The figure of the pursuer is reminiscent of the leading figure in the work by William Rimmer (American, 1816-1879) entitled Flight and Pursuit also painted in 1872 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). It has been suggested by Ellwood C. Parry (The University of Iowa, 1977) that both Rimmer and Calderon could have taken for inspiration Jean L‚on G‚r“me's The Pasha's Runners in which two men run from a gateway in Cairo, their shadows cast beneath them as they sprint to the left.

EXHIBITION London, Royal Academy, 1883, no. 241. NOTES Calderon was preoccupied with the theme of girls reposing by water. The present picture is one of his largest and most succesful compostions, and carries echoes of On the Banks of the River Clain near Poitiers,(R.A. 1866, no. 369) in which the girls are depicted in medieval costume, and The Virgin's Bower, his R.A. exhibit of 1870, (no. 369), sold at Christie's New York, 25 June 1998 ($94,198), in which two figures in classical dress draw water from a stream. A classical figure can also be seen in Springtime, his R.A. exhibit of 1896, no. 263. In this picture a group of beauties are about to bathe. One lower left is testing the temperature of the water, while the standing figure is about to slip out of her robe. Calderon is clearly alluding to a subject popularized by the Old Masters namely the goddess Diana, assisted by her nymphs, bathing in a shady grotto. The reference would have been noted by nineteenth-century admirers. Calderon was born at Poitiers to a French mother and Spanish father who later became professor of Spanish literature at King's College, London. After attending Leigh's Academy in Newman Street, he studied in Paris in the 1850s under Fran‡ois Piot, before returning to London. A member of the St John's Wood Clique of artists, he was a resident of this London suburb from 1858.
