Gabriele Caliari The Wedding Feast At Cana Old Master Painting

      Est: $1,000 - $100,000

16th Century; Frame 54.25" height x 90.5" width, Artwork 44.25" height x 82.25" width, Gabriele Caliari (1568–1631) was an Italian of the late-Renaissance period. He was the eldest son of Paolo Veronese, was born in 1568, and died of the plague. After training in the workshop of his father, he seems to have painted few pictures of his own, and devoted himself chiefly to commerce, going on painting just for pleasure. Oil on Canvas, The Transformation of water into wine at the Wedding Feast in Cana was the first miracle Jesus performed in the Bible according to John 1:12. In the foreground, far left, is a small dog waiting for scraps and the parties host announcing the miracle to bride and groom. On the right, servants are filling goblets from the wine jugs. Mid-ground, far left, the bride and groom are shown holding hands, seated beside brides mother and other family members. At the center of the table sits Jesus with illuminated halo and his hand in the sign of benediction. To his left sits Virgin Mary and to his right sits other disciples of Christ. At the far right of the painting, an older man peeks out at the viewer, no doubt a self portrait of Caliari himself. Throughout the background, guest are peering over shoulders at the miracle. This painting is displayed in a later carved basket weave frame. On the reverse of painting are several handwritten lot numbers and a Christie's Auction House stamp. This painting was sold at Sotheby's, New York and was featured in their November 7, 1985 Fine Old Master Paintings Catalog Lot No. 14. This painting was inherited from the original purchaser and still retains the original receipt from Sotheby's. We are not qualified to give condition or attributions.
