HALL, Samuel Carter.- Two autograph letters addressed to the daughter of King George V of Hanover, the Princess Royal Frédéric, at Hampton Court Palace, on stationery headed "Stanford Road, St. Albans Road, Victoria Road, Kensington", one dated May 1884, both signed S. C. Hall. Samuel C. Hall was an Irish-born Victorian journalist, best known for his editorial work on The Art Journal and for his much-satirised personality.

Samuel John Carter, Nach der Rebhuhn-Jagd Blick in weite, karge herbstliche Gebirgslandschaft mit treu blickendem schwarz-braunem Border Collie und Pferd sowie der auf einem Stein ausgebreiteter Niederwildstrecke aus Rebhühnern und Auerhühnern, fein naturalistisch festgehaltene Tiermalerei mit trefflich erfasster Stofflichkeit der Tiere, neben Pferdedarstellungen waren es besonders die charaktervollen Hundeportraits, welche Carter einen bleibenden Platz in der Tiermalerei des 19. Jh. sicherten, hierzu bemerkt AKL: "... [Schuf] qualitätvolle, von Leichtigkeit und Tiefe gekennzeichnete Landschaften, Figürliches, Portraits und Tiere in der kultivierten Art von Edwin Henry Landseer, mit dem er vermutlich gelegentlich zusammenarbeitete. Hervorhebenswert sind die geschickte Komposition. ..." und sein durch die Entdeckung des Tutanchamun-Grabes berühmt gewordener Sohn Howard Carter sagte später über seinen Vater: „Er war ein nicht unerheblicher Tiermaler … und einer der fähigsten Zeichner, die ich je kannte. Seine Kenntnisse der vergleichenden Anatomie und sein Formgedächtnis waren unübertroffen. Er konnte jedes Tier in jeder Aktion, verkürzt oder anders, mit größter Leichtigkeit aus dem Gedächtnis genau darstellen. ...“, feine Pastellkreidezeichnung, links unten schwer lesbar signiert und datiert ”SamJ. Carter 1881”, rückseitig Stempel "Galerie Bora", minimale Altersspuren, hinter Glas und Passepartout (gebräunt) gerahmt, Passepartoutausschnitt ca. 62,5 x 83,5 cm. Künstlerinfo: bedeutender englischer Illustrator, Tierzeichner und Tiermaler (1835 Swaffham/Norfolk bis 1892 London), als Kind Schüler von John Sell Cotman an dessen Malschule in Swaffham, studierte ab 1848 an der School of Design in Norwich, beschickte 1855-90 die Ausstellungen der Royal Academy in London, ab 1857 in London ansässig, galt 1867-89 als einer der wichtigsten Illustratoren des weltweit ersten illustrierten wöchentlichen Nachrichtenmagazins, der "The Illustrated London News", tätig in London, Quelle: Thieme-Becker, AKL, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, "The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940" und englische Wikipedia. Samuel John Carter, After the Partridge Hunt View of a wide, barren autumnal mountain landscape with a faithful looking black-and-brown border collie and horse as well as a stretch of small game consisting of partridges and capercaillies spread out on a rock, finely naturalistic animal painting with excellently captured materiality of the animals; in addition to depictions of horses, it was particularly the characterful dog portraits that secured Carter a lasting place in 19th century animal painting. AKL comments on this: "... [Created] high-quality landscapes characterised by lightness and depth, figurative works, portraits and animals in the cultivated manner of Edwin Henry Landseer, with whom he probably occasionally collaborated. The skilful compositions are noteworthy. ..." and his son Howard Carter, who became famous for the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, later said of his father: "He was a not inconsiderable animal painter ... and one of the most skilful draughtsmen I have ever known. His knowledge of comparative anatomy and his memory for form were unrivalled. He could accurately depict any animal in any action, foreshortened or otherwise, with the greatest ease from memory. ...", fine pastel chalk drawing, signed and dated "SamJ.
