    Joseph Cartwright (British, 1789-1829) Views of Malta watercolour (two) h:35 w:53 cm Provenance: Private collection, Cambridge. Other Notes: Joseph Cartwright was appointed Paymaster-General in 1815 of the forces at Corfu, a post which afforded him ample opportunity to make sketches of the islands and coastlines of Greece, Italy, Corfu and Malta. Upon his return to England he published a volume entitled "Views in the Ionian Islands" and devoted himself to painting marine and naval subjects. In 1825 he was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, and in 1828 he was appointed marine painter to HRH The Duke of Clarence, Lord High Admiral of England, later King William IV.
