    Apr. 05, 2025

    John & William Cary's New and Improved Terrestrial [1815, 1883] & Celestial Globes [1799]

    Est: $75,000 - $100,000

CARY, John (1754-1835) and William Cary (1759-1825). Cary's New and Improved Celestial Globe; Cary's New Terrestrial Globe. Celestial: London, 1799; Terrestrial dated 1815, with amended information to 1833. 21" diamter; 47" height. A fine pair of attractive floor standing 21-inch library globes, presented on distinctive Cary English-style stands. A pair of tall library globes each made up of 2 sets of 12 hand-colored engraved globe gores, each with title cartouches. Original varnish removed, some stress fractures, as usual, a few expertly restored, occasional light browning. Brass hour circles, diameter 3.25 inches and brass meridian circles, each with an engraved graticule to one face. The globes mounted on their original elegant English Georgian mahorgany tripod stands, original compasses and pointers, both horizon bars with facsimile papers, supported by four quadrants, with centreal turned wooden pillar and 3 ball and claw feet. An elegant ebonized lozenge inlay on each tripod leg. The firm of Cary was established by John Cary, a noted map-seller and engraver, and his brother William, an unstrument maker. The firm published their first globes in 1791 and by the end of the 18th century had established themselves as one of London’s leading globe manufacturers. In about 1820 the Cary brothers moved their business to 86 St. James Street, leaving their premises at 181 Strand to John Cary’s two sons George (1788-1859) and John Jr. (1791-1852) who traded as G & J Cary until around 1850 and continued to produce globes of the highest quality. The rivalry in London between the Cary and Newton firms over this period created intense competition with both firms making highly polished and decorative globe pairs both for table and library use. The Cary brothers were particularly attentive to the geography of the terrestrial globe, the plates often being amended with new information as it came in. This particular globe has an 1815 date, but with amendments up to 1833.

  • Antique (1836) Hand-Colored EUROPE Map by John Cary
    Jul. 07, 2024

Antique (1836) Hand-Colored EUROPE Map by John Cary

    Est: $100 - $200

Antique Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraved Map by British Cartographer and Engraver John Cary (1754-1835) titled EUROPE | From Cary's New Universal Atlas, Published: London, John Cary, 1836 Edition | Approx. Size: 13.25" W x 11" H. Antique map of Europe during the time of Napoleon. France has taken Belgium, the Netherlands, and Northern Italy. This is a British view of the current state of Europe. John Cary (1754 - 1835) was a London based cartographer active in the early part of the 19th century. Ronald Vere Tooley, the prominent English map historian, writes of Cary, "As an engraver he was elegant and exact with fine clear lettering and great delicacy of touch." Cary began his work as an engraver, cartographer, and globe maker in 1776 with his New and Correct English Atlas. This important atlas represented a new phase in cartography where accuracy and detail rose in prominence over the decorative embellishments of the 18th century. This change was indicative of the times when travel and commerce were expanding globally as never before. Cary's mastery of both engraving and cartography resulted in a series of seminal works that redefined mapmaking in the early 19th century. His stupendous Cary's New Universal Atlas, published in 1808, set the standard for all cartographers who followed. Cary reissued this seminal atlas in 1811, 1819, 1824, 1828, 1833, 1836 and 1844. Cary also did considerable work on the English Ordinance Survey prior to 1805. His cartographic work particularly inspired the Edinburgh school of cartography as represented by John Pinkerton and John Thomson. In America, Cary's work was used as the basis for Tanner's important New American Atlas. Cary's last published atlas appeared posthumously in 1844.
