    Apr. 30, 2025

    CASSANDRE (1901-1968) Le Bifur

    Est: €2,500 - €3,500

CASSANDRE (1901-1968) Le Bifur Fonderies Deberny-Peignot, 1929.

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) CHEMIN DE FER DU NORD. 1929. 39¼x24¼ inches, 99½x61½ cm. L. Danel, Lille. Condition A: minor creases and abrasions in margins. In 1929, Cassandre merged some of the key graphic conceits of his two earlier posters for the railroad (the fading perspective formed by the converging rails and telegraph lines, and the star balancing on the rails themselves) with a compass needle. The manner in which he renders the needle and its shadow is extremely elaborate and sophisticated airbrush work. Cassandre uses the blue sky and smattering of clouds to help the needle stand out, and the large black "N" of the compass reinforces the "Nord" in the poster's title. Cassandre had devised this idea of a compass needle several years prior when he used it for the redesigned cover of the railroad company's magazine. Est: $10,000 - $15,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) THOMSON. 1931. 46½x30¾ inches, 118x78 cm. Alliance Graphique, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; creases and minor overpainting at edges, in image and along horizontal folds. Framed. Promoting electric devices in the home as an aide to housework, this "remarkably legible design . . . is based on a clever graphic pun on the term main-d'oeuvre (literally, hand-labor, i.e. hired help)" (Mouron, p. 78). "It can be seen as both surrealist and, through its monumental approach, leading towards being an object poster" (Weill / Cassandre p. 132). This is the full-size version. Est: $7,000 - $10,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) ITALIA - COSULICH / LLOYD TRIESTINO - ADRIA. 1936. 37¾x24½ inches, 95¾x62¼ cm. [Alliance Graphique, Paris]. Condition A: small repaired tear at lower right edge; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image. Of all the different types of posters Cassandre designed, ocean travel was "a theme the artist delighted in, constantly renewing himself, constantly varying not only his point of view and angle but also his style" (Mouron p. 64). Indeed, compared to his monolithic works for the Normandie and L'Atlantique, his close-up views of the Statendam's and S.S. Cote d'Azur's funnels, and his "diagramatic" image for SAGA, here, "Cassandre renewed his vision yet again . . . dramatically reducing the size of the three ships setting out to conquer a watery globe" (Mouron p. 67). On this poster, the artist only signs his initials, using a monogram instead of his signature, to protect his identity from the Mussolini regime that had banned French artists from working on Italian commissions. This is the German version. Crouse p. 243, Mouron 100, Cassandre / Weill p. 184, Schipp & Affiche p. 90, Brown & Reinhold 60, Cassandre / Suntory 84.

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) NEW STATENDAM / HOLLAND - AMERICA LINE. 1928. 41¼x31¼ inches, 104¾x79¼ cm. Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam. Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears and minor creases in border; repaired pin holes in corners and at top edge; minor creases in image. Framed. Though launched in 1924, the Statendam's maiden voyage was delayed until 1929 due to construction problems. Known as the "Queen of the Spotless Fleet," it served the Holland-America Line until 1940, when it was destroyed during World War II. To promote the vessel's first crossing, Cassandre developed this compelling close-up view of funnels and ventilation cowls, with stylized waves of smoke billowing out overhead. Cassandre's love of sea travel found him "constantly renewing himself, constantly varying not only his point of view and angle but also his style" (Mouron p. 64). This poster not only represents another unique vantage point from which to view technology, but is "a prime example of Cassandre's attention to tonal values. The color scheme . . . brings a wonderfully sober equilibrium to the composition" (ibid. p. 66). ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) VAN NELLE PAKJES KOFFIE. 1931. 46x62 inches, 116¾x157½ cm. Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam. Condition B+ / B: replaced losses with overpainting; repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. Thanks to a connection with the advertising agency Nijgh and van Ditmar, Cassandre did a lot of work for major Dutch clients, like Oranjeboom beer, Holland America Line, De Vries Robbe, Philips and Van Nelle, an important coffee dealer. This is his most progressively modernist poster and also the purest and most minimal image he ever designed, with a simple, geometric outline of box and a similarly simple coffee bean. Cassandre augments the pure design by using sharp colors, an airbrushed background that seems to vibrate and exceptional typography. Est: $400,000 - $600,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) DUBO, DUBON, DUBONNET. Triptych. 1932. Each 78½x55 inches, 199¼x139¾ cm. Alliance Graphique, Paris. Condition varies, generally A- / B+. Framed. Detailed individual condition reports by request. One of the most famous graphic triptychs ever designed, Cassandre's Dubo Dubon Dubonnet, cinematic in its frame-by-frame storytelling, depicts a man drinking and literally filling himself with a delicious apéritif. To say that this particular triptych represents a trifecta of superlatives may seem like a gratuitous play on words, but in fact, these images are a cultural, historic and artistic touchstone of twentieth-century design. Immediately beloved, the little drinking man became widely used by the company over the years, appearing in countless settings and in various media, immortalizing the brand. These exceedingly rare large images are the middle size of three formats published in 1932. This was the very first appearance of the legendary brand mascot logotype. ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968). LE PROGRÈS. 1927. 31½x41 inches, 80x101½ cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris.

    Est: $25,000 - $35,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) LE PROGRÈS. 1927. 31½x41 inches, 80x101½ cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and minor restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; slight foxing in image. Framed. Cassandre's poster for the newspaper Le Progrès "symbolizes in a very expressive way the idea of progress, of moving forward" ( Vendre, July 1930 p. 42). The design of this poster follows quite soon after Cassandre's masterwork for another French newspaper, L'Intransigeant, designed in 1948. "Here, it is again a face, a profile that is the motif of the poster, but this face is silent. It is that of a man who walks, forehead lowered towards progress, a distant horizon that the tip of an arrow indicates in space." ( Vendre, October 1927, p. 347). An arrow in and of itself is certainly not a sophisticated design element, but "Cassandre knew how to renew it by imbuing it with his personal temperament. And he has, as a result, rehabilitated this unfortunate arrow, so worn out, so hackneyed, a symbol so clichéd that he has completely stripped its initial meaning . . . recognizing that the arrow is the most typical sign of the idea of direction, [Cassandre] did not hesitate to use it, but he found a way to incorporate it into the silhouette of his face, by geometrically combining on a yellowish background, black and white rectilinear areas. In this way he confers an identity of matter to the two elements of the image. And their ensemble has an undeniable vigor of allure and movement" (ibid). It has been pointed out that because Cassandre was charged with using the newspaper's letterhead that he was unable to incorporate his own creative typography into this poster. This is one of Cassandre's rarest posters; we could locate only 3 other copies at auction since 1993. Crouse p. 103, Commercial Art / Art & Industry 1928, p. 20, Vendre October 1927, p. 347, Vendre July 1930, p. 42, Cassandre / Weill p. 48.

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968). LE NOUVELLISTE. 1924. 61x44½ inches, 155x113 cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris.

    Est: $7,000 - $10,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) LE NOUVELLISTE. 1924. 61x44½ inches, 155x113 cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris. Condition A-: minor creases and restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; small replaced loss at top edge; ink and paper stamp in upper left image. In 1923, having created a graphic revolution with his poster for Au Bucheron, the 22 year old Cassandre entered into a period where he began toying with different typography and experimenting with how to organize space geometrically. These early images are so geometrically precise it seems as if they were designed with a compass and a ruler. This poster for a daily newspaper in Lyon, is a perfect example of how he could build a clear, strong image using a simple drawing and well-balanced colors. Rare. ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968). CYCLES BRILLANT. 1925. 46¼x30 inches, 117½x76¼ cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris.

    Est: $15,000 - $20,000

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) CYCLES BRILLANT. 1925. 46¼x30 inches, 117½x76¼ cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris. Condition A- / B+: minor repaired tears and creases at edges; overpainting along lower right margin, slightly into image; minor foxing in image; unobtrusive horizontal fold. Framed. For this advertisement, Cassandre builds the entire composition around the incline of the bicycle. The diagonal motifs mirror the cyclist leaning into his turn at the velodrome, and the typography leans with him. Graphically, the image is a sophisticated construction composed of circles: the cyclist's eyes, his shoulders, his hands, the handlebars, and the curve of the track (where Cassandre has cleverly signed his name). The three colors, which simplify the scene, enhance the dynamic vision. "This is one of Cassandre's most economically realized images, with every contour, curve and shape serving a well-defined function. Its adherence to specificity and minimalism is truly brilliant" (Crouse p. 129). Although this is one of Cassandre's earlier posters, it is also one of his most daring attempts to stylize the human body. Crouse p. 128, Cassandre / Weill p. 44, Suntory p. 37, not in Mouron.

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) REGLISSE FLORENT. 1925. 59x39½ inches, 149¾x100¼ cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; creases and abrasions in margins and image; staining at edges; linenbacked, with non-archival paper on recto. These mints were so well known to the French public that "it was therefore not a question of informing people of a special fact, a new argument, or an astonishing result. It was enough [for Cassandre] only to put before their eyes . . a familiar form whose very notoriety was its greatest strength" (Vendre, July 1926, p. 52). He does so in a vigorous, Cubist manner in which "all its linear elements are composed in such a way that their geometry attracts the eye" (ibid). He puts the product's name on a curve that echoes the contours of the container itself, and the color scheme, as with Cassandre's poster for Nouvelliste, is red, white and blue. Here, he actually signs his name in red, which is a unique case amongst his works. Beautiful art deco poster, circa 1955/56. Artwork by Adolphe Mouron Cassandre (1901-1968). Printed by Axel Andreasen & Sonner, Kobenhaven. Cassandre originally designed this three part poster for the French aperitif Dubonnet in 1932. This is the third installment in the triptych. The popularity of the poster trio was so long lasting that this version was executed twenty-three years after the design first appeared on the walls of Paris. This 2-sheet version of the third sheet in the triptych was the only one of the three images to be printed. However, it was never actually posted as it was too large to fit into the designated posting areas. Image size seen approx. 48" x 66-1/8", overall frame size approx. 52-5/8" x 71-1/2". Linen backed. NOTE: This is a very large framed poster. Poster will be removed from the frame for shipping.

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron) Chemin der Fer du Nord 1929 39.25 h x 24.75 w in (100 x 63 cm) Seldom seen, this Cassandre should be considered a masterpiece of Modern design. Advertising the French Northern Railway from Paris to the English Channel, meaning is conferred here swiftly, and with great elegance. The compass points—conflating with the speed lines of the train—the oblique angle of true North, and the convergence point of the rails all create dramatic, unusual geometries for a perfect symphonic whole. Note that the southeast compass point directs a beam of light onto the word "confort"—a trick that Cassandre would deploy, three years later, for his world-famous Pathe (illuminating "electrique" in 1932; see PAI-LXXI, 279). This is the smaller format of the poster. Imp. L. Dedicated to its role as a pre-dinner beverage, its motto has always been "open the appetite"—a slogan which Cassandre most literally depicts in this poster. ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) ITALIA. 1936. 39¾x24¾ inches, 101x62¾ cm. Coen & Co., Milan. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and minor overpainting in margins and image and along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in corners. One of two images Cassandre produced for the ENIT (Italian Railway) during a summer's stay in Italy with his assistant Raymond Savignac in 1935. The other image depicted "the sports" or leisure activities available to tourists of Italy, while in this poster the focus is on art, history and religion. In a style far more suggestive and surrealistic than his Machine Age images of trains and ocean liners, Cassandre depicts the Madonna and Child and Roman ruins with faint mountains visible in the background. As a French artist working in Mussolini's Italy, Cassandre used a monogram instead of his signature to protect his identity. Mouron 61, Manifesta 1, Cassandre / Weill 172, MoMA 434.1976.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) BONAL. 1933. 63¼x47 inches, 160½x119½ cm. Alliance Graphique, Paris. Condition B+: replaced losses and repaired tears in margins; minor creases and abrasions in image; horizontal fold at bottom. One has to imagine that following the success of his brand mascot for Dubonnet, in 1932, Cassandre was emboldened to try another figure filling himself with spirits for his next liqueur commission. As the motto for Bonal touts it as a cordial that "opens your appetite," Cassandre depicts it, quite literally, as a key. The spirit itself appears as a stream of stars infusing the body. Alain Weill explains that the background, "never seen before, almost kinetic, shows that Cassandre was certainly interested in the study of retinal sensations" (Cassandre / Weill p. 126). The poster was so popular that it was reused in 1935, virtually identical except for a different color background. Mouron p. 54, Cassandre / Suntory p. 177, Cassandre / Weill 117.

"Nord Express". Farblithografie; 102x70 cm (BG); im Stein sig. u. dat. (19)27 o.r. Neudruck. Blatt minimal gestaucht und Ränder stellenweise geringfügig eingerissen. Der französische Grafikdesigner A.M.
