Catalogue note: Between 1878 and 1898, Cassatt devoted much energy to printmaking, continuing with the medium towards the end of her career. Cassatt embraced the themes of femininity and maternity in her work, and though she had no children of her own, she often depicted the intimacy of mothers with their children. Denise, the subject of this print, was a professional model often employed by Cassatt.

    7 L.A.S., Bachivillers puis Septeuil [1891-1892] et s.d., à Albert Bartholomé 19 pages in-8 ou in-12 (2 cartes), une avec décor japonisant. Intéressante correspondance artistique au sculpteur Bartholomé. Bachivillers par Chaumont-en-Vexin [fin 1891]. Elle est allée à Paris pour trouver une nouvelle cuisinière. Son père ne va pas mieux [il meurt le 9 décembre 1891]. « Quand à moi voilà six semaines que je travaille sur un tableau que je suis forcée d’abandonner tellement le temps a été contraire à la peinture en “plein air” ! Leroy est décoré du ruban violet ! Impossible d’imaginer un homme plus heureux, il m’écrit qu’il doit cet honneur à mon “haut concours”. Si vous voyez M. Raffaëlli voulez-vous le remercier pour moi ? »… Elle espère qu’avec Degas ils vont bien et qu’ils s’accorderont un peu de changement et de repos. Elle a déjà annoncé à Mrs. Havemeyer « que ses tableaux seront bientôt en Amérique » …. – [Octobre 1892]. Elle demande à Bartholomé la faveur de lui prêter [un chevalet ?] « afin que je puisse finir mes quelques kilomètres de peinture ». Le temps est très mauvais, elle a fait installer un poêle ; « heureusement ma mère aime la campagne autant que moi. ». Elles n’ont vu personne, à l’exception de Pissarro, avec son « terrible fils, sa femme et sa belle-fille. Pissarro m’a complimenté sur “mon courage” ? J’espère que vous avez beaucoup travaillé, car après tout c’est le bonheur ». Elle n’ose lui demander de venir avec Degas : « j’ai besoin de tout “mon courage” et il a une façon de m’applatir, que je ne puis supporter pour le moment »… – Elle connait la propriété de M. Koechlin et a souvent souhaité, en passant devant sa grille, qu’elle fût à louer : « Il y a même un atelier ! ». Elle demande si Bartholomé demeure à Paris « par ces temps de choléra », elle espère sa prochaine visite à Bachivillers « quand vous aurez un moment de répit de vos travaux »… Septeuil jeudi. Il a tellement plu qu’elle n’a pu l’inviter à venir la voir « avec Monsieur Degas. […] Impossible de travailler depuis que nous sommes ici, je suis au désespoir ». Son frère vient de New York avec ses enfants pour les voir la semaine prochaine, et elle aimerait que Bartholomé lui fasse le plaisir de venir un prochain jour avec Degas, si ce dernier d’est pas déjà parti pour Cauterets… Elle regrette de ne pas voir le nom de Madeleine Lemaire parmi les nominations à la Légion d’Honneur. Elle est remise de sa chute ; le cheval qu’elle a loué est tombé et s’est abimé le genou, la première fois que le cocher l’a sorti… Lundi. Elle n’a jamais reçu sa lettre qui, comme celle qu’elle a écrit à Mme Dreyfus [elle a fait son portrait], s’est perdue, car « la poste n’est pas bien faite à Septeuil ». Elle a passé beaucoup plus de temps à Paris que voulu, sans avoir le temps d’aller voir Bartholomé. « J’ai su chez Durand-Ruel que Degas était à Cauterets et aussi ce qui m’a fait beaucoup de peine que ce pauvre John Lewis Brown était à toute extrémité. Est-ce que Degas a de bonnes nouvelles de Fèvre [son beau-frère l’architecte Henri Fèvre, en Argentine], il devait être inquiet au milieu de tous ces bruits de révolution. J’espère que vous avez bien travaillé ; je voudrais en pouvoir dire autant, non je ne peux pas dire que je n’ai pas travaillé car je travaille toute la journée mais les résultats ! » Invitation à un dîner avec les Lerolle. – Autre invitation à dîner, avec sa cousine et son mari, en regrettant de ne pas avoir les Jeanniot « en vue de l’affaire des illustrations »…

Paper measures approximately 6x8 and framed to the overall size of 14x16. Mary is best known for her perceptive depictions of women and children. Mary was one of the few American artists active in the nineteenth-century French avant-garde. She voyaged to Europe to show women can paint as well as men and she was the only painter of her time to exhibit with the French impressionists. Condition: Very Fine
