GABRIELE CASTAGNOLA (Genoa, 1828 - 1883) "Friars", 1875. Oil on canvas. It has a Puncture in the upper margin, slight damage and restorations. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 110 x 72 cm. Gabriel Castagnola was an Italian artist born in Genoa and active in Florence. He worked in oil painting and chromolithography in an academic style. This style of painting and sculpture is derived from the Academies where most artists received their formal training and is characterized by its high finish, use of mythological or historical subjects and moralistic tone. Castagnola's paintings tend to be somewhat sentimental and often focus on themes of love and romance. High Renaissance painter Filippo Lippi's romance with the young novice Lucrezia Buti is a recurring theme in his pieces, as are nuns in general. His works include: Filippo Lippi e Lucrezia Buti (1863), Scena Romantica (1864), Ciociara, Jeune Fille au Balcon (1865), Faust and Marguerite (1870), Lippi declaring his love to the nun/Lippi with the nun (1870) ), Filippino Lippi and his lover (1871), Love or duty (1871), A nun observing two butterflies (1872), Reading Together (1872), Rosen (1873), Scena Galante, Romantic Couple Assis Sur un Banc (1873) , The Embrace of Fra Filippo Lippi and Lucrezia Buti (1874), The Meeting (1875), Nun Admiring the Lovebirds (1875), La Monaca e il Pittore, Amor Cortese (1876), The Kindly Gesture (1876) and Seduction ( 1877). It presents a Puncture in the upper margin, slight flaws and restorations.

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

GABRIELE CASTAGNOLA (Italian, 1828-1883) Filippo Lippi Falling in Love with Lucrezia Buti 1873 oil on canvas, a pair each signed, inscribed and dated: G. Castagnola / Firenze 1873 (one lower left, the other lower right) 100 x 74cm PROVENANCE: Bonhams, London, British and European Art, 20 March 2018, lot 112 Private collection, Sydney OTHER NOTES: These two paintings depict the development of the love affair between the artist Filippo Lippi and Lucrezia Buti. Buti was a nun at the monastery of Santa Margherita in Prato where, in 1456, Lippi was commissioned to complete a painting for the high altar. After having used her as the model for his Madonna it is said that they fell in love and he stole her away, bringing her to his home in Florence where they remained and would go on to have two children. In the scene with Lippi on his knees one can see to the right his famed painting of the Madonna currently held in the collection of the Uffizi gallery.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Attributed to Gabriele Castagnola (Italian, 1828-1883) Filipo Lippi and the Sister Buti Abraded signature or inscription l.r., identified on a handwritten label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 27 x 20 1/2 in. (69.5 x 52.5 cm), in a carved and gilded frame. Condition: Craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Sister Buti is often identified as Lucrezia Buti, described as the artist's muse. There is a legend, reported by Vasari but not substantiated elsewhere, that Fra Filippo was preparing frescoes for the cathedral in Prato, when he was asked to paint a picture for the convent chapel of S. Margherita of Prato. There he met the beautiful Florentine, Lucrezia, who at the time was either a novice of the Order or a young lady placed under the nuns' guardianship. Lippi asked that Lucrezia might be permitted to sit for the figure of the Madonna (or perhaps S. Margherita). A seduction ensued, the artist absconded with the young woman, and Vasari further claims that Lucrezia became the mother of Filippino Lippi.
