Legislative Building signed and dated 1946 (lower right) watercolor on paper 12” x 15” (30 cm x 38 cm) Provenance Solidaridad Galleries Dominador Castañeda’s masterful strokes and exceptional tonal values are exemplified in this 1946 watercolor work. This piece features a relaxed and scenic landscape across the 'Old Legislative Building', now the National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts. The image seems to offer a perspective of someone enjoying a moment of respite in the shade of the trees, surrounded by greenery and admiring the calm edifice at a distance. However, unlike most of his landscapes bathed in cool tones, 'Legislative Building' has a warmer undertone, perhaps an effect of the color of the paper he used. Nevertheless, this deviation from his usual tones resulted in an image resembling that of an old photograph, evoking a taste of nostalgia. (Jessica Magno)

Under the clear blue sky and soft touches of sunlight, the bustling street is brought to life with a warm and lively atmosphere. Makeshift stalls are lining up from both sides of the street, and vendors are tending to and preparing their products. Although his figures are stuck in motion, the piece evokes a lively atmosphere from the influx of people slowly approaching the stalls. The viewers can almost hear the townsfolks’ reverberating footsteps, endless chattering, and bargaining between vendors and customers. Indeed, the artist’s deft hands and colorwork have created a masterpiece that exudes a profound nostalgia for the time that passed. (Jessica Magno)

In comparison to Amorsolo’s fiery warm fields, Castañeda chooses to wash his landscape with cooler tones. The 1964 Barrio Scene and Old Sampaloc Tree, for example, are awash with light blues and cool greens that one could almost feel the cool, cloudless afternoon that Castañeda so lovingly portrays. His landscapes, while sharing the bliss of his contemporaries’ depictions of the Philippine countryside, are more reserved and intimate, a stolen glance in an otherwise normal afternoon that his viewers would return to again and again, drawn in by the nostalgia that Castañeda is adept at translating. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Fort Santiago signed and dated 1930 (lower left) oil on canvas 22" x 28" (56 cm x 71 cm) Various scenes of Manila figure prominently in the works of Dominador Castañeda. In this work, the revered artist-mentor depicts a pre-war view of the historic Fort Santiago (before all the reclamation frenzies). Specifically, Castañeda shows the towering Baluarte de Santa Barbara and the Falsabraga de Media Naranja (so named after its shape that resembles a half orange). The Baluarte de Santa Barbara, the fort’s highest defensive structure and named after the patron saint of artillerymen and armorers, was built in the 16th century to serve as a line of defense at the mouth of the Pasig River, where it meets with the Manila Bay. It was further fortified by the construction of the Falsabraga de Media Naranja, which was built from 1729 to 1745. During the American colonial rule, the US forces built a wooden headquarters and a tower on the baluarte, transforming the centuries-old structure into their command post and the site of their administrative offices. During World War II, the dungeons beneath the baluarte, which were formerly storage vaults for gunpowder, became dreaded prisons that witnessed the harrowing death of more than 600 civilians and military forces. Castañeda imbues the composition with the mundaneness of everyday living; cascos transporting freight and people can be seen plying the pristine waters of the Pasig, which the artist highlights using a mixture of verdant greens and calm blues. However, Castañeda’s use of somber colors adds a layer of enigma to the work, especially since Fort Santiago was a symbol of colonial rule; it was the military base of the Spanish, British, American, and Japanese imperial powers. Dapdap signed and dated 1947 (lower right) oil on canvas 19" x 24 1/2" (48 cm x 62 cm) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Makati City As a close contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo, Dominador Castañeda made a conscious effort to deviate from the prevailing ‘Amorsolo school.’ Landscapes - such as this bucolic scene - were his forte, and this he executed by way of a calmer color palette as opposed to the fiery chiaroscuro of Amorsolo’s canvas. His landscapes are predominantly rendered in white and light blue tones, evoking a cool atmosphere in contrast to Amorsolo’s yellow and orange flecked scenery. This luminous landscape seems to anticipate his excitement for things to come. Castañeda retired from teaching from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts where he became dean. E. Aguilar Cruz wrote in 1975: “His retirement from teaching in 1961 was a release from virtual imprisonment in routine… Once more on his own, he set to paint with almost feverish energy, producing more in the last few years of his life than he had in all his 30 years of connection with the Fine Arts faculty.

Bukid signed (lower left) ca. 1931 oil on wood panel 13 1/2” x 18” (33 cm x 45 cm) Private Collection, Switzerland Acquired from the above by the present owner WRITE UP: Dominador Castañeda, a close contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo, would travel with the master artist as well as the likes of Irineo Miranda and Jose Pereira to paint countryside scenes. Their chosen subject matters often echo each other, but Castañeda deviated from Amorsolo’s style as he used cooler hues in contrast to the latter’s warm color palette and chiaroscuro technique. Painting one’s first impression is also of primary importance for the painter, an advice passed on to his son during their landscape trips and painting sessions together. Bukid has a distinct atmosphere brought about by Castañeda’s cool palette and intimate take on a rural scene. The intensity of tropical light that Amorsolo utilized is not present in this piece. Instead, Castañeda achieves a darker yet calming imagery with his signature majestic clouds, trees and foliage, and local subject at work rendered in a classicist dictum, painting likened to tuning an emotional cord.
