Alessandro Castelli Roma 1809-Rome 1902 Arcadian landscape with Mandria to pasture This sheet is to be considered one of the first youth works of the Roman painter Alessandro Castelli, when he was a pupil of the Academy of San Luca. Equipped with an excellent designer vein and a fluid and calibrated dutcus, in the designs it was possible to combine careful attention to the natural data, increasingly important for the sensitivity of the nineteenth -century artists, with a neoclassical ascending, found in the perfect compositional balance. Reference points of this poetics are undoubtedly Carlo Labruzzi, and in particular his drawings depicting via Appia, and Simone Pomardi, his first master and uncle. Alessandro Castelli thanks to this type of production collected abundant success in life, especially in France, where at the Salon of 1867 Napoleon III acquired his exposed paintings. Carlo Castria, Roma Famiglia romana La bella raccolta di dipinti e disegni di seguito proposti proviene dalla collezione dell'avvocato Carlo Castria, collezionista di arte contemporanea tra gli anni Venti e Trenta del Novecento, e le opere conservate presso la sua abitazione in via degli Astalli è giunta integra alla presente vendita. Uno dei nuclei della raccolta è costituito da sette opere del pittore romano Alessandro Castelli (1809-1902), che fin dalla metà dell’Ottocento era considerato dalle guide inglesi e tedesche il più importante e valente pittore italiano di paesaggi e riconosciuto come caposcuola della pittura dal vero coniugata alla composizione di vedute romantiche. Ottimo disegnatore, pone lo studio attento e dettagliato della natura in grandi composizioni impostate secondo un equilibro di derivazione classicista, realizzando vedute di paesaggio vere e ‘inventate’ allo stesso tempo. Le grandi tele qui presentate sono tra i migliori esempi di ricchezza compositiva e raffinata luminosità, dove i toni chiari rendono l’atmosfera trasparente e la vegetazione e le rocce sono ben definite e realistiche e offrono un diretto confronto con La Nera a Narni presso il Ponte di Augusto, databile tra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta dell'Ottocento, dipinto di proprietà de La Galleria Nazionale dato in deposito a Palazzo Madama, sede del Senato della Repubblica. I disegni sono esemplificativi della sua perfetta tecnica di studio dal vero nei dintorni di Roma, dove la sua esperienza di incisore si evidenzia nel preciso dettaglio naturalistico. (L. From Sotheby's catalog description: 'Castelli was a student at the Academy of San Luca in Rome. Travelling extensively in Europe, he settled back in Rome in 1870, specializing in views of the Roman campagna. In the present work, Castelli uses a minutely executed Roman landscape as the backdrop for a Biblical subject. The composition presumably depicts Christ's crucifixion on Golgotha, with an imaginary Jerusalem in the left background: ''And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'. And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying 'Aha! Dimensions: 38 1/4'' X 64'', frame 46 1/4'' X 71 1/4''. Provenance: Joey and Toby Tannenbaum Collection, sold at Sotheby's March 18, 1998, lot 3. From Sotheby's catalog description: 'Castelli was a student at the Academy of San Luca in Rome. Travelling extensively in Europe, he settled back in Rome in 1870, specializing in views of the Roman campagna. In the present work, Castelli uses a minutely executed Roman landscape as the backdrop for a Biblical subject. The composition presumably depicts Christ's crucifixion on Golgotha, with an imaginary Jerusalem in the left background: ''And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'. And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying 'Aha!
