This is an After Henry Papprill (1816-1903) hand colored print, based on original sketch by Frederick Catherwood Esq. (1799-1854) titled "New York", Taken from North west angle of Fort Columbus, Governor's Island. It is in black stained wood 36" x 26" frame under glass. Condition is fair to good with general yellow discoloration and an area of foxing spots. However, the clouds have looming darkening from the original coloring which distracts from the spotting. Frame and right side ding that can be attended to if you intend to keep it. Very tasteful print.

Catherwood in 1844. This from a rare, deluxe first edition of the work with original hand-coloring mounted to card (this particular lithograph has been re-mounted professionally to new card). There were only 300 copies of the work produced, with a very limited number in this deluxe format. The original illustrations for this work were completed by Catherwood. The tinted lithographs were completed by Andrew Picken, William Parrott, Henry Warren, John C. Bourne, George Belton Moore and Thomas Shotter Boys. Most of Catherwood's original paintings were destroyed in a fire when on exhibit. CATHERWOOD, FREDERICK (1799-1854) Jerusalem: two drawings, perhaps circa 1833. 12 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches (31 x 47 cm); pencil and watercolor heightened with white on watercolor paper mounted to card. With the adhered overmats presumably removed some time shortly after the sale of the drawings at Christie's (who provided a measure of the matted area only), with resulting damage to the extreme--previously obscured--margins, the drawings showing some fading relative to these previously matted portions. Some mostly minor foxing. Frederick Catherwood, best known for his explorations in Central America and for his studies and drawings of Mayan sites, began his career as a topographical artist with travels to the Mediterranean. In 1833, he made a six-week survey of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, one of the first such by a Westerner. Given the centrality of the Dome in these views from the outskirts of the city, we would cautiously ascribe these to that period of Catherwood's work. They are, by any standard, important views of Jerusalem by one of the foremost topographical artists of the period. Provenance: John Davies F.R.I.B.A. and thence by descent; sold Christie's Sale 7073 (Exploration and Travel), Lot 258, Sept. 21, 2005 (at that time, from the measurements, without removal of the overmats); purchased by Bernard Shapero for the Collection of Jay I. Catlin, Folio - Ball Play

George Catlin’s North American Indian Portfolio features stunning lithographs which capture Native American history. Field describes the lithographs as “beautiful scenes in Indian life [that] are probably the most truthful ever presented to the public.” The full title reads North American Indian Portfolio. Hunting Scenes and Amusements of the Rocky Mountains and Prairies of America. From drawings and notes of the author, made during eight years travel amongst forty-eight of the wildest and most remote tribes of savages in North America. This is a first edition folio lithograph that was published in London beginning in 1844 for George Catlin / Egyptial Hall [but Chatto & Windus]. It was considered the best and expanded edition and one of only 350 copies. The lithographs were printed by Day & Haghe from a selection of the greatest images from Catlin’s travels. Each lithograph features beautiful original hand-coloring. George Catlin’s Portfolio marks a noteworthy moment in American history. Catlin traveled extensively chronicling the lives and culture of Indians across America. He created nearly 500 paintings of which some were used to make prints for this momentous work. Catlin described his need to do this work in that “the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian.” Original images of Native Americans are uncommon from the 19th century, and Catlin’s are among the most detailed and impressive. Catlin summarized the Native American as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, -- yet honourable, contemplative and religious being." In a famous passage from the preface of his North American Indian Portfolio, Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian." He saw no future for either their way of life or their very existence, and with these thoughts always at the back of his mind he worked, against time, setting himself a truly punishing schedule, to record what he saw. From 1832 to 1837 he spent the summer months sketching the tribes and then finished his pictures in oils during the winter. The record he left is unique, both in its breadth and also in the sympathetic understanding that his images constantly demonstrate.

It may have been a Mayan place of worship, possibly a cemetery. It is comprised of a quadrangle, perfectly proportioned, and embellished with sculpted friezes rich in Mayan religious imagery.
