      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Harvey Wallace Caylor (American, 1867-1932) On the Ranch, 1898 Oil on canvas 20-1/2 x 72-1/2 inches (52.1 x 184.2 cm) Signed and dated lower right: H.W. Caylor / 1898 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Arizona. Born in Indiana, Harvey Wallace Caylor left home at a young age to work as a cowhand across the West. Having trained under Jacob Cox, instructor of William Merritt Chase, Caylor earned a living as a portrait painter early in his career. In 1890, Caylor and his wife settled in Big Spring, Texas, where he began to focus his attention on painting stampedes and trail herds. He hit his stride in 1894, as he gained the attention from fellow ranchers such as C.C. Slaughter and George T. Reynolds. Paintings by Caylor are rare to the market as most of his paintings were privately commissioned and are still in the collections of ranch families and the Heritage Museum in Big Spring. On the Ranch, 1898 was completed the same year that Caylor began acquiring land in Texas. Rendered in a primitive narrative style, this monumental depiction of ranch life perfectly encapsulate the Western work life at the turn of the century. HID01801242017
