Adriano Cecioni (1836-1886) was an Italian sculptor, painter, caricaturist and critic. He began his artistic training in 1859 at the Florentine Academy under the sculptor Aristodemo Costoli. Cecioni's works are in collectionsof manyItalian museums, including Galleria d'arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti, Florence, Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna, Rome, Museo statale d'arte medievale e moderna, Arezzo, and Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan. Il dipinto, non firmato, è stato attribuito a Cecioni quando la sua pittura non aveva ancora ricevuto quell'attenzione scientifica che, da pochissimi anni, ha fatto emergere non solo la figura di Giovanna Cecioni, insegnante al convitto delle Mantellate di Firenze e sorella di Adriano, la quale espose più volte i suoi quadri alla Promotrice di Firenze – alcuni attribuiti in un primo momento al più noto fratello - ma anche degli altri fratelli Egisto ed Enrico, mosaicisti di qualità. Il dipinto in questione, infatti, da un punto di vista stilistico sembrerebbe potersi ascrivere a una personalità dell'entourage familiare di Adriano, del quale in ogni caso si avverte la suggestione creativa nell'atmosfera di sospesa ritualità, quasi metafisica, che connota il soggetto narrato, centrato, come amavano fare sia lo stesso pittore che la sorella Giovanna, sul tema della vita quotidiana dei fanciulli e della loro psicologia.
