Cellarius - Celestial Chart with Northern Hemisphere at center and Band of Zodiac [Typus Aspectuum Oppositionum Et Coniunctionum Etz In Planetis]

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

This exceptional, originally hand-colored celestial map engraving is from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus, Totius Universi Creati Cosmographiam Generalem, Et Novam Exhibens. It was published in Amsterdam in 1708 by Gerard Valk & Petrus Schenck. Cellarius’s work is one of the most highly decorative and noted as one of the finest celestial atlases ever produced. His atlas was done at the height of advancements in the understanding of the universe. Cellarius's atlas was a masterful work at the height of the golden age of Dutch cartography. Cellarius's charts blends exquisite artistry with the scientific knowledge of the heavens at the time. He depicts the three great planetary systems of Ptolemy, Nicholas Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe. He took inspiration from the globes of Plancius and Blaeu. He rendered the motions of the sun, moon, and planets and illustrated the constellations with classic and biblical figures, animals, and instruments. Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665) was a Dutch-German cartographer and cosmographer. He worked as a schoolmaster and eventually headmaster. He published several works but Harmonia Macrocosmica is still considered his greatest publication. The frontispiece for the work was engraved by Frederik Hendrik van den Hove. At least ten plates were engraved by Johannes van Loon. The classical constellations were illustrated after Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam.

    Est: €1,000 - €1,200

Andreas Cellarius , "Typus Selenograhicus Lunae Phases et Aspectus Varios Adumbrans", old coloured copper engraving celestial map, Amsterdam 1708, framed Andreas Cellarius or Andreas Keller, around 1596 in Worms-Neuhausen - 1665 Hoorn, German astronomer, mathematician and cosmographer, here: Impressive, hand-coloured copper engraving - celestial map with the selenographic phases of the moon from Cellarius' Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus, generally regarded as the largest celestial atlas ever published, 2nd edition Peter Schenk and Gerard Valk, Amsterdam: 1708, 33 x 39 cm with platemark, framed under passepartout. Andreas Cellarius was an astronomer, mathematician and cosmographer born in Neuhausen near Worms. He studied at the University of Heidelberg in 1614 and married in Amsterdam in 1625. From 1637 he was headmaster of the Latin school in Hoorn. In 1660, he published his outstanding celestial atlas, the Harmonia Macrocosmica, also known as the Cellarius Atlas, with Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. The star atlas is considered one of the most spectacular works of art in the history of astronomy and consists of 29 double-sided copper engraving plates. The work was published a second time by Valk & Schenk in 1708. This map describes the phases of the moon as we understand them today and is offered by Cellarius as a contrast to the Ptolemaic explanation for the phases of the moon with multiple orbits or "epicycles" that had dominated astronomical theory before the 17th century. The image shows a Tychonic viewpoint, with the sun, moon and stars orbiting the earth. The explanation for the phases of the moon is easily recognised here by the magnificent rays of the
