                Est: $1,500 - $2,500

This exceptional, originally hand-colored celestial map engraving is from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus, Totius Universi Creati Cosmographiam Generalem, Et Novam Exhibens. It was published in Amsterdam in 1708 by Gerard Valk & Petrus Schenck. Cellarius’s work is one of the most highly decorative and noted as one of the finest celestial atlases ever produced. His atlas was done at the height of advancements in the understanding of the universe. Cellarius's atlas was a masterful work at the height of the golden age of Dutch cartography. Cellarius's charts blends exquisite artistry with the scientific knowledge of the heavens at the time. He depicts the three great planetary systems of Ptolemy, Nicholas Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe. He took inspiration from the globes of Plancius and Blaeu. He rendered the motions of the sun, moon, and planets and illustrated the constellations with classic and biblical figures, animals, and instruments. Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665) was a Dutch-German cartographer and cosmographer. He worked as a schoolmaster and eventually headmaster. He published several works but Harmonia Macrocosmica is still considered his greatest publication. The frontispiece for the work was engraved by Frederik Hendrik van den Hove. At least ten plates were engraved by Johannes van Loon. The classical constellations were illustrated after Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam.

Andreas Cellarius was an astronomer, mathematician and cosmographer born in Neuhausen near Worms. He studied at the University of Heidelberg in 1614 and married in Amsterdam in 1625. From 1637 he was headmaster of the Latin school in Hoorn. In 1660, he published his outstanding celestial atlas, the Harmonia Macrocosmica, also known as the Cellarius Atlas, with Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. The star atlas is considered one of the most spectacular works of art in the history of astronomy and consists of 29 double-sided copper engraving plates. The work was published a second time by Valk & Schenk in 1708. This map describes the phases of the moon as we understand them today and is offered by Cellarius as a contrast to the Ptolemaic explanation for the phases of the moon with multiple orbits or "epicycles" that had dominated astronomical theory before the 17th century. The image shows a Tychonic viewpoint, with the sun, moon and stars orbiting the earth. The explanation for the phases of the moon is easily recognised here by the magnificent rays of the

THE MOST SWEEPING, AMBITIOUS PROJECT IN THE HISTORY OF CELESTIAL CARTOGRAPHY Folio (20 1/8” x 12 1/2”): π2 2π2(–2π2). 3 text-leaves (title, blank, contents, blank; duplicate title, blank), engraved title-page (Frederik Hendrik van den Hoven) and 29 double-page engraved plates, all of which with hand-color by a contemporary hand. Bound in contemporary sheep panelled in blind (re-backed). All edges of the text-block speckled red. Re-backed, with some strengthening to the fore-corners. Duplicate letter-press title-page with a repaired loss to the upper edge. Plates numbered in ink manuscript verso. With pigment oxidation to the verso of the plates, consistent with original coloration. A very good copy indeed, with fine color. Andreas Cellarius (or Keller, ca. 1596–1665) was born in Germany and worked principally in Holland. From 1637 he was rector of the Latin school in Hoorn, North Holland’s third city (after Amsterdam and Haarlem). Apart from this, little is known except for his production of the revolutionary Harmonia macrocosmica in 1660. The XVIIc was a time of revolution in the field of astronomy; Copernicus’s heliocentricity of the XVIc released science from the shackles of Aristotle, paving the way for Brahe, Galileo, Kepler and Newton. Cellarius made visible those great strides, integrating ancient astronomy and mythology and forming the armature of modern astronomical illustration. By 1708 — the publication date of this second edition, with the only change being the addition of Valk’s and Schenk’s names to the engraved title-page — the world of astronomy had progressed considerably. Newton’s publications came to reshape and to dominate the field (along with several others) from the 1680’s, and yet Cellarius’s visualizations and aestheticization of the cosmos held then as they do now an appeal that has never been surpassed. Koeman IV Cel 3.
