(Milan circa 1625 – before 1700 Venice) Diana and Cupid; and Venus and Cupid, oil on canvas, each 116 x 99 cm, framed, a pair (2) Provenance: art market, France, 1990s (as Pietro Liberi?); sale, Bérard-Péron, Lyon, 14 September 2024, lot 18 (as Federico Cervelli); where acquired by the present owner Literature: U. Ruggeri, Pietro e Marco Liberi. 89 and 90 (as Federico Cervelli) Federico Cervelli was born in Milan and although details of his training remain elusive, it is likely that he was trained in the workshop of Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, a reference evident in his early works. Around the age of twenty, he left his native city for Venice, where he encountered Pietro Liberi and the early works of the so-called tenebrosi. From the mid-seventeenth century, these artists steered Venetian art toward a more naturalistic expression, absorbing influences from Luca Giordano and Jusepe de Ribera. The reconstruction of Cervelli’s oeuvre is complicated by the scarcity of dated paintings. His first work with a certain date is the Sacrifice of Noah in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo (1677–1678), followed by the ceiling decorations of the library of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, completed by 1682. Over the course of his career, the artist achieved considerable renown both in the Veneto – especially in Venice and Padua – and beyond the territories of the Serenissima, as evidenced by the fact that in 1690 his youngest daughter had none other than the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando III de’ Medici, as her godfather. This pair featuring Diana and Cupid and Venus and Cupid, marked by a rich and radiant application of paint, appears to belong to Cervelli’s early Venetian period. In it, one can discern the influence of Pietro Liberi, whose elegant mythological figures – often rendered as enchanting female nudes – offer a clear point of reference. The refined physiognomies of Diana and Venus, their sensual poses, and the meticulous depiction of drapery, with folds delicately edged in light, evoke the stylistic hallmarks of Liberi’s work. From the 1680s onward, the Milanese artist gradually shifted his style, drawing increasing inspiration from Luca Giordano and Tintoretto.

    Est: €25,000 - €50,000

This large painting, with the title Neptune and Amphitrite, was attributed to Pietro Liberi (Padua 1605 - Venice 1687) by tradition in the family of origin, and was part of a series of four canvases dedicated to the Seasons; together with the Allegory of Autumn interpreted by Bacchus and Ariadne, it was hesitated by Semenzato in Venice in 2002 with this attribution. Even in the compositional syntax largely inspired by the works of Liberi and the Florentine Sebastiano Mazzoni (Florence 1611 - Venice 1678), this allegory, in our opinion, presents evident stylistic relationships with the allegorical works of Federico Cervelli who, after his Lombard training, began his Venetian career. right in the workshop of Pietro Liberi.
