  • Manon Lescaut. ca. 1920.
    May. 04, 2008

    Manon Lescaut. ca. 1920.

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Manon Lescaut. ca. 1920.This Puccini opera premiered in Turin on February 1, 1893, but this Cetto poster promotes the Ricordi-published libretto nearly thirty years later. Both the opera and the poster feature the gallant Chevalier des Grieux, the title character's true love. Having abandoned him for the wealth and status afforded her by becoming the mistress of Geronte de Revoir, the Treasurer General, the lovers are reunited after des Grieux amasses a fortune from gambling and seeks Manon out. However, as they prepare to run away together, Manon grabs the jewels that de Revoir has given her, for which she is subsequently arrested on charges of thievery and prostitution. Des Grieux follows Manon when she's deported to America for her "crimes." In the opera's final act set in a vast desert on the outskirts of New Orleans-though he was a masterful composer, Puccini obviously didn't care much about geography-Manon expires in des Grieux's arms, overcome with thirst and fatigue.
