(30.5 x 20.3cm.) * Provenance: Purchased at Mc Tears Auctions, Glasgow, 2016 for £1,800. ** Note: Born in Nantes in 1869, Paul Chabas trained under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1890 and won the Prix National at the 1899 Paris Salon and was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 and in 1912 received the Médaille d'Honneur. His is considered one of the greatest painters of the nude, a subject that stirred much controversy in America where his painting September Morn provoked a scandal and much publicity. When he entered the painting in the Paris Salon of 1912, he set a price of $10,000, which he believed no one would pay. Leon Mantashev, son of oil magnate Alexander Mantashev, was willing to meet this price, and the painting was sold to him. Chabas was also an illustrator and his work appeared in many books. He became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1921 and received the Légion d'Honneur in 1928. From 1925 to 1935 he was president of the Société des Artistes Français. He died in Paris in 1937.

Situé et monogrammé, en bas à droite : Jaille PC Provenance : • Offert par l’artiste à la famille Lelièvre de la Touche, • Puis par descendance Natif de Nantes, où sa respectable famille est implantée dans le commerce depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, Paul Chabas étudie à l’Académie Julian, à Paris, sous le magistère de Bouguereau et de Robert-Fleury. Présent régulièrement au Salon, et ce dès 1885, il y présente d’honorables portraits bourgeois mais se distingue surtout par ses compositions oniriques, où des jeunes femmes en tenue de bain (ou d’Eve) badinent lors de délicats jeux aquatiques, nimbées de lumières aurorale ou crépusculaire (fig.1). Œuvre caractéristique de sa production : « Joyeux ébats » (Musée d’Art de Nantes, inv.824) lui fait obtenir le prix national du Salon de 1899 (fig.2). Aussi appelée « Les Baigneuses », l’œuvre fut réalisée dans un atelier aménagé dans le parc du manoir de la Guillonière, sur les bords de l’Erdre, mis à disposition par son ami nantais Lelièvre de la Touche, propriétaire d’un vaste domaine comprenant aussi le manoir voisin du Jaille. Le lieu devait recueillir toutes les faveurs de l’artiste puisque l’on sait qu’en 1894, fit l’acquisition du manoir de la Chataigneraie, distant de quelques kilomètres. Notre petit paysage (le seul autonome que l’on connaisse), exécuté par de rapides touches épaisses, grâce auxquelles on perçoit des accents rosés dans ce ciel gris-bleu de soir d’automne, fut offert à la famille Lelièvre de la Touche, lors d’un des séjours amicaux de Chabas à Jaille. On y perçoit, en condensé, sous son vernis sale, toute son écriture des effets lumineux atmosphériques, des reflets sur l’eau, des brumes, que l’on retrouve dans son tableau le plus célèbre, à l’histoire originale. Exposé au Salon de 1912, « Matinée de Septembre » (New York, The Metropolitan Museum, inv. 57.89), sitôt l’événement terminé, est expédié auprès d’un marchand à Chicago, où, choqué devant la nudité et la jeunesse du modèle, le maire de la ville intente un procès au galeriste, pour indécence. La justice tranche en faveur du galeriste et l’affaire rend l’œuvre célèbre. Toutefois, le marchand s’en sépare et l’envoie chez un confrère à New-York, où son exposition en vitrine provoque la colère d’Anthony Comstock, influent président de la Society for the Suppression of Vice. Le débat devient national, entrainant une reproduction sur tous supports de l’œuvre, achevant sa publicité. Elle sera acquise par un collectionneur russe, puis par Callouste Gulbenkian, puis, enfin, un amateur de Philadelphie qui en fit un don anonyme au Metropolitan. Illustrations comparatives : Fig.1. Oil on canvas. Housed in a magnificent period floral encrusted gesso decorated giltwood frame. Signed lower left "-Chabas-", titled on presentation plaque "Happy New Year - Chabas", there is some confusion in that the artist the painting with an "S" that looks like a "D" and the plaque signifies the "S", but neither indicates the artists first name. Paul Emile Chabas is known to have done formal portraits which this is inline with. SIZE: 48-1/2" x 33-1/2".
