Forbidden Planet signed and dated 1985 (verso) collage 42" x 39" (107 cm x 99 cm) WRITE UP: Having nurtured several generations of today’s Filipino contemporary artists throughout three decades of teaching at the UP College of FineArts, Roberto Chabet is best known for his conceptual approach that paved the way for further experimentation and, in the words of artist and curator Ringo Bunoan, “a sense of playful criticality” in Philippine art. Although he embarked on an artistic career alongside the postwar Filipino modernists, Chabet stood out for his deconstructive treatment of medium and form. “Drawing is the anchor to Chabet’s expansive body of works,” Ringo Bunoan writes, referring to Chabet’s knack for experimenting with fragments or pieces of forms— the visible marks made before a drawing turns into an image. Such experimentations on form would culminate in Chabet’s collages that he began to make in the late 1970s when he would gather various graphic, print, and illustrated ephemera— a miscellaneous collection of things which would later on expand in the 1980s to include maps, cartons, wrappers, lists, receipts, and postcards in his series of China Collages. This series, reaching up to over 300 works in Chabet’s oeuvre, would become formative stepping stones towards a series of cosmos- themed exhibits later on such as Other Planets in 1993 and Guide to the Night and Noonday Skies in 2001. The fixation with space or the idea of placement through displacement (of forms) is a recurring theme of Chabet’s works, particularly evident in his collages. In the China Collage series, the maps, in place of any cartographic function, become abstracted places as various ephemera overlap to form an unpredictable arrangement, becoming intersecting pieces of time and space. Chabet expounds on this theme of displacement later on by evoking liminality as a sense of ‘no-place’ in Other Planets and Guide to the Night and Noonday Skies: “The artist sees his territory not only as a specific place but as a departure point for an ‘elsewhere.’ The artist builds boundaries and breaks down boundaries. Placement implies displacement... Art measures the artist’s known place and the unknown ‘no place’ — a nowhere, a utopia that is glimpsed through the artist’s metaphor. Metaphor is displacement.” In this 1985 work, Chabet refers to the ‘no-place’ as a forbidden planet of sorts. Solid blocks of red, green and yellow peek out amongst the scattered pieces of printed graphic and ephemera, torn and cut into fragments of space and time. Here, memories of former worlds are deconstructed and reconstructed into a new world or a ‘no-place’ of the artist’s own making. The worlds of Chabet’s collages thus float in and across space and time, here and elsewhere in the cosmos, like a forbidden planet light years away— either waiting to be discovered or yearning for a long distance connection. Full-color photograph on page 59 and painting description on page 58 WRITE UP: From October 2011 to January 2012, the Ateneo Art Gallery mounted an exhibit entitled Windows to Conversation, a group exhibition with works by Roberto Chabet, Lee Aguinaldo, and Fernando Zobel. Windows to Conversation is a part of Chabet: 50 Years, a year-long series of exhibitions celebrating Chabet’s five-decade-long career. Though miles of distance separate the triad, webs of indirect interactions and artistic inspirations connect Aguinaldo, Zobel, and Chabet. Aguinaldo and Zobel had been acquainted in 1952, a friendship that started during their respective overseas studies in the US. For Roberto Chabet, his introduction to this trio began with Lee Aguinaldo in 1962. Already an established painter, Aguinaldo gave the younger Chabet advice regarding his medium of choice. Chabet’s Window was a part of his Windows series and was included in the exhibit at the Ateneo Art Gallery. Windows feature heavily in Chabet’s oeuvre, either as subjects or metaphors to play with. German sociologist H.J. Krymanski noted that the window as a metaphor is associated with the “voyeuristic and inquisitive instincts of man.” In art, windows act as a framing device through which the viewers can look in. Ma. Victoria T. Herrera, the curator of Windows to Conversation, wrote: “As a metaphor, windows help the viewer ‘frame’ and ‘focus’ ... but while it allows us to look deeper into an enclosed space, the act of framing also limits our perspective.” Chabet’s Window emphasizes the limitation inherent with this framing device and he made it the piece’s strength. He imbues a mysterious allure to this piece, imploring the viewer to look past the aperture and into the void. He takes on the position of the viewers, blurring the lines of interrogator and interrogee in an absolute testament to his mastery of this subject matter—all as message, as framing devices, and as metaphors. The Pillow Series challenges conventional notions of art, pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a "work" and inviting viewers to question their preconceived notions. Chabet's practice is generally defined by the artist’s attempt to redefine and even discover new ways of expression that are not defined solely by the institutions and machinations that define are and the art world. In other words, his was a practice of dismantling the ivory tower built by the art world, and from its pieces, return (or perhaps redefine) art for a new age. Chabet's Pillow Series acts as a catalyst for introspection and self-reflection. The enigmatic quality of the artworks compels viewers to search for meaning beyond the literal representation of pillows. Though one may interpret Chcabet’s pillows as merely crude sketches, it is the very act of sketching that turns these pieces into more than an act of expression, but of reflection as well. For Chabet, a work of art does not begin at the moment of creation nor end at its execution. Arrt is viewed as a process, and that process continues, arguably, ad infinitum. These pieces, though not emblematic of Chabet’s entire practice, shows us an important glimpse into a part that may be in fact greater than the whole Roberto Chabet's Pillow Series stands as a testament to his artistic vision and ability to evoke contemplation through visual art. By defying categorization, incorporating visual symbolism, and eliciting introspection, the series transcends the physical realm of pillows and transports viewers into a realm of poetic ambiguity.

His art has always been informed by the intent to question modernity, where it is his belief that all things are temporal, fleeting, and fluid. Furthermore, Chabet perceived art as a democratizing force, able to liberate one’s artistic pursuits from the arbitrary shackles of traditional art. Hence, he saw his works as liberating given that they no longer adhere to a strict style or form. The oeuvres of Chabet are often regarded as groundbreaking and innovative in their production, execution, and presentation. A sense of a multilayered, multileveled kind of art is present in his pieces. Untitled collage 40 3/4" x 36 3/4" (103 cm x 93 cm) In the 1960s, Chabet’s works were collages that consisted of maps, drawing on handmade paper, children’s scrawls and drawings, and envelopes without addresses. There was always the sense of a multileveled kind of art in terms of materials, genres, and diffusion over various publics and over a large global space. The work itself becomes a charged site, which spontaneously attracts elements from all over the natural and intellectual universe. Chabet’s practice significantly dealt with the notion of repeating. His position as a studio art professor at the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines and his stint as artistic director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines from 1960 to 1971 enabled him to pursue this mission. From here on, Chabet’s art would always have the sense of a multilayered kind of art in terms of materials, genres, and diffusion over various publics.

WRITE UP: As the father of Philippine Conceptual Art, Roberto Chabet exemplified the radical shifts and movements that defined the Filipino art scene in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Chabet sought to find alternatives to formalism and genre-based art, two of the most popular styles at the time. Instead, he opted to tackle more complex and avant-garde themes through groundbreaking artistic experimentations and practices. Thus his works often challenged the boundaries of traditional and institutional works by thinking outside the box and working beyond the canvas. He produced innovative pieces through unconventional means such as installation and found object works that utilize a myriad of materials such as perishable organic materials, magazine clippings, esoteric ephemera, and other cultural debris. Chabet’s creative spirit also helped foster the next generation of artistic voices to pursue the arts through an avant-garde lens. This particular piece titled Blind Window is one of the few oil on canvas paintings Roberto Chabet produced during his illustrious career. This work is part of a series of paintings and drawings Chabet made between the years 1963 to 1966 that used the window as a subject, compositional device, and as metaphor. Chabet’s works often drew on and extended conceptual ideas of relational and serial structures, utilizing materials such as plywood for their association with the rebuilding of Manila after the end of the Second World War, and implying the body of the viewer into an experience of the work in space. In this piece, Chabet utilizes a technique akin to pointillism in order to achieve a cohesive and alluring gradation effect the mimics the interplay between light and shadow.

Roberto Chabet (1937 - 2013) Untitled signed and dated 1980 (lower right) 13 1/2” x 9” (34 cm x 23 cm) Widely acknowledged as the Father of Philippine Conceptual Art, Roberto Chabet is highly regarded for his experimental works, ranging from sculptures to installations created out of everyday materials and found objects. His works sparked an epochal shift within the traditions of Filipino art. His multidisciplinary approach to art sought to demonstrate the flexibility and versatility of the medium by exploring techniques and methods outside the then overarching style of Modernism and Abstract Expressionism. Roberto Chabet saw conceptual art as a democratizing force, able to one’s artistic pursuits from the arbitrary shackles of traditional forms of artistry. Thus, Chabet saw his works as liberating given that they no longer adhere to a strict style or form. Chabet’s practice took on a number of forms. Throughout his artistic career, he was a painter, sculptor, performer, and curator. He was the first Museum Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He then went on to lead other artist-run spaces in order to foster budding creative professionals and artists.
