C28S, p. 354 (illus., C28, another example) ESSAY ‘Art must be the manifestation of some vital force coming from the dark, caught by the imagination and translated by the artist’s ability and skill… Whatever the final shape, the force behind is… indivisible. When we philosophise upon this force, we lose sight of it. The intellect alone is too clumsy to grasp it.’1   Like his much-admired predecessors and contemporaries such as Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti and Barbara Hepworth, Lynn Chadwick is widely regarded as one of the twentieth century’s greatest sculptors. Fusing extraordinary imagination with immense technical ability, his art is revered for its remarkable ability to both respond to, and transcend, its time; as Terence Mullaly reflected in his obituary of the artist, ‘…he produced objects eloquent of both the grandeur and the dilemma of man. They are highly idiosyncratic, yet their message is universal.’2 Born in London in 1914, Chadwick studied architectural drafting and design after his World War II service as a pilot, before emerging during the fifties as a sculptor with a singularly distinctive and dramatic style. Following two solo exhibitions at Gimpel Fils, London, he was propelled to fame in 1952 as one of seven young British sculptors invited to exhibit at the British Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 1952, and in 1956, was awarded the Biennale's highest honour – the prestigious International Prize for Sculpture. Over the subsequent decades, Chadwick has exhibited to widespread success in Paris, London, New York and Tokyo, and today is represented with works in most major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tate Gallery, London; the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia.   Although Chadwick’s first creations were – quite appropriately, given his flying experience – abstract mobiles and elegant suspended constructions of metal and glass, it is his timeless architectonic forms combining elements of the human and mechanical such as  Sitting woman, 1985, for which he remains most highly acclaimed. Evolving from the brooding standing figures of the sixties, and the voluminous, striding figures of the seventies onwards, the present bronze is an impressive example of the artist’s seated figure motif which, though punctuating his entire oeuvre to a certain degree, culminates during this decade – most famously in his monumental  Back to Venice, 1988, commissioned by the British Council for the XLIII Venice Biennale in memory of the artist’s extraordinary achievement thirty-two years earlier.   Capturing the rarefied essence of something human, universal, contemplative and at times, elegiac,  Sitting woman invariably beguiles and attracts, drawing in the viewer yet at the same time, revealing little. Like the best of Chadwick’s mysterious works, the sculpture remains powerfully elusive in its anonymous strength and silent presence – and perhaps that is the point. As the artist himself – notoriously reluctant to assign specific meaning to his work – elaborates, ‘...The important thing in my figures is always the attitude – what the figures are expressing through their actual stance. They talk, as it were, and this is something a lot of people don’t understand...’3   1. Chadwick, L.,  The Listener, London, 21 October 1954 2. Provenance:Sale, Christie's, New York, 7 November 2000, lot 174Acquired from the above by Baroness RawlingsLiterature:D. Farr and E. Chadwick, Lynn Chadwick, Sculptor: With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947-2003, Farnham, 2014, p. 192, no. 338, illustration of another castThe Maquette for the Trigons consists of three stacked angular forms supported by a three-pointed base. This distinctive base embodies the title of the work, Trigon, derived from the ancient term for triangle. Chadwick created several maquettes in the Trigon series, experimenting with varying proportions and surface finishes, all unified by the iconic three-point structure. His sculptures explore the dynamic interplay of strong, angular, and compact forms, imbued with a sense of energy. Chadwick's figures are abstracted into geometric shapes-rectangular heads, spiky legs, and bulky torsos-evoking aspects of the human body while deliberately avoiding the individualized or representational qualities typical of traditional portraiture. The Trigon series reflects Chadwick's fascination with monolithic human forms, particularly the Moai statues of Easter Island. In 1963, a large-scale version of Trigon was acquired by Maurice Ash, chairman of the Town and Country Planning Association, on behalf of the Harlow Art Trust and currently on display in Harlow town centre. Chadwick's career gained momentum during the 1950s, securing his reputation as one of Britain's leading sculptors. He first exhibited in 1950 at the Gimpel Fils gallery in London alongside Kenneth Armitage, also featured in the auction (lot 27 & 64) and Reg Butler. The following year, he was commissioned to create three works for the Festival of Britain, including Cypress, a mobile sculpture crafted in metal. His international acclaim was solidified in 1956 when he won the International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale, followed by exhibitions in 1957 at the Saidenberg Gallery in New York. The Maquette for the Trigons was created shortly after Chadwick moved to Lypiatt Park, a medieval manor house which he transformed into a permanent exhibition space for his art, ranging from monumental bronzes to his iconic maquettes. In 1972, Chadwick established his own foundry at Lypiatt Park and later collaborated with Pangolin Editions for the casting of his bronzes.'Art must be the manifestation of some vital force coming from the dark, caught by the imagination and translated by the artist's ability and skill ... Whatever the final shape, the force behind ... indivisible. When we philosophise upon this force we lose sight of it. The intellect alone is too clumsy to grasp it, ' A. LYNN CHADWICK (London, 1914- 203). "G18", 1971. Bronze. Exemplar 4/6. Signed, dated and justified. Provenance Diaz Mancini Gallery, Caracas. Measurements: 55 x 17 x 16 cm. "The important thing in my figures is always the attitude, what the figures express through their actual posture". (The artist, in Barrie Gavin Interviews, HTV West, 1991) Observers and strangers were themes to which Lynn Chadwick returned again and again throughout her career. The figure, reduced to a block standing on small legs, are probably a semi-autobiographical creation, a reference to the lone sentries Chadwick would have been familiar with during World War II, when he served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. This work specifically reflects his interest in creating abstract yet expressive figures, often characterized by angular forms and a sense of dynamic movement. Despite the harshness of his materials, it evokes a sense of existentialism and human vulnerability, reflecting the anxieties and complexities of the post-war period. The angular forms and abstracted human figures contribute to the larger discourse on the nature of the human condition, making it a poignant reflection of the cultural and social concerns of the time. Chadwick studied at Merchant Taylors' School in Northwood. There he expressed an interest in becoming an artist, although his art teacher suggested that architecture was a more realistic option. Consequently, Chadwick became an apprentice draftsman, working first in the offices of architects Donald Hamilton and Eugen Carl Kauffman, and eventually for Rodney Thomas. Chadwick was greatly inspired by Thomas, whose interest in contemporary European architecture and design greatly influenced his development. His training in architectural drawing was the only formal education he received as an artist. In April 1941, having been a conscientious objector,Chadwick volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm, and between 1941 and 1944 served as a pilot during World War II. In March 1946 he won a £50 prize in a textile design competition, which earned him a contract to make further designs for Zika and Lida Ascher.Around the same time, Chadwick was commissioned to make exhibition stands for the Aluminium Development Corporation. Chadwick left London in 1947 and settled in the village of Upper Coberley, near Cheltenham. There he converted outbuildings into a studio where he worked on his designs and early sculptures. In August 1949, one of Chadwick's small mobiles was placed in the window of Gimpel Fils, which promoted modern British art. The following year, he held his first solo exhibition there, which earned him critical attention and several major commissions.

Provenance: Collection of Mrs. Audrey Larman, West Palm Beach, Florida. Audrey Larman's grandchildren recall her passion for art, suffusing their childhood memories: "My grandma was a lover of art in every form. She adored Picasso, Calder, Dubuffet, and others. She loved taking my brother and I to museums around the world. We would point to a painting on the wall and she would always know the name of the artist. Her homes were the perfect canvas to make her art the star. The paintings are all bold and some dramatic. As children, we would imagine that her paintings would magically come to life. Over the years, she donated significant artwork and fashion - Jean Dubuffet, Bill Blass, and others - to museums, most notably the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so others might enjoy them as well."
