Portarait of a Woman in a black gown, 1851, coloured chalks, depicting a well-dressed victorian lady in a black gown with lace off the shoulder edging, flowers pinned to the middle of her bust, signed and dated lower left, 54 x 40.5 cm (21 1/4 x 16 cm) mount aperture, in antique-style gilt frame with arched recess, (75 x 63 cm), old printed label for J.J. Patrickson, framers to verso QTY: (3) NOTE: John Gilbert was a self taught artist, providing illustrations for books and publications including Punch. Stehend die junge, schöne Prinzessin Charlotte (1796 - 1817) in weißem Empirekleid beim Harfenspiel, die 1816 Prinz Leopold von Sachsen-Coburg (1831 - 1865 König der Belgier) heiratete; neben ihr sitzend ihre Mutter Caroline (1768 - 1821), durch ihre Ehe mit Georg IV. 1820/21 Königin von Großbritannien, Irland und Hannover. Chalon, der seit 1797 an der Royal Academy in London studierte und seit 1816 Akademie-Mitglied (RA) war, schuf Aquarell-Bildnisse der gehobenen Gesellschaft und wurde 1837 Hofmaler der junge Königin Victoria, die sich von Chalon im vollen Krönungsornat porträtieren ließ. NO RESERVE Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.- Chalon (Alfred Edward, Swiss portrait painter, 1780-1860) Portrait of a young lady, watercolour and pencil on wove paper, with detached autograph inscription that reads ' Jeune Allemande à Woolwich/ Institute chez le Col. Jones./ 1827.', the portrait approx. 174 x 145 mm. (6 7/8 x 5 3/4 in), the drawing with light crease and surface dirt, both mounted together, unframed, 1827. ⁂ It is likely that the young German lady depicted who caught Chalon's attention was a guest of Colonel John T. Jones, the author of the 1827 'Journals of Seiges carried on by the army under the Duke of Wellington in Spain between the years 1811 and 1814'.

Both printed and published by Thomas Boys, printseller to H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent, 11 Golden Square. Verso of one with label from Maison du Cadre, J.L. Peytrequin, 1 Rue de la Paix, LAUSANNE. Both contained in matched glazed gilt wood frames measuring approximately 23.75" x 16.5".
