Louis Chalon (1866-1940) is a French painter and bronze sculptor. He exhibited vast classically inspired paintings in the Salons of the Societe des Artistes Francais where he was awarded an Honorable Mention in 1885, another one in 1898, a Third Class Medal in 1891, and an Honorable Mention at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900. Many of his subjects are mythological, while many of his female subjects are femme-fleurs, women symbolizing flowers. Chalon primarily worked in bronze.

LOUIS CHALON (France, 1866 - 1940). "Walkiria". Bronze sculpture. Signed. Marble base. Modernist wooden base. Presents a restoration in a brim of the hat and damage in the marble base. Sizes: 114 x 50 x 80 cm (sculpture with marble base); 68 x 166,5 x 37 cm (wooden base). Valkyrie sculpture by Louis Chalon. The Nordic horsewoman, mounted on a rearing horse, is preparing to attack. She raises her lance with her right arm, opens her mouth in a warrior's cry and her cloak is draped in an infinite number of folds by the wind. She is dressed for combat, with finely crafted armour covering her torso, leaving her legs bare. On her head she wears a winged helmet, a typical attribute of the Valkyries. Valkyries, from Norse mythology, are one of the best-known images of women warriors and symbolise the union of beauty and bellicosity. In modern art, Valkyries appear as beautiful maidens on winged horses, covered with helmets and armed with spears. However, some translations of the Norse "eddas" (compilations of myths) identify their mounts as terrible wolves on whose backs they fly over the battlefields, searching for the bodies of chosen warriors. Chalon succeeds in boldly conveying the sensation of movement and struggle, as well as rendering every detail with the utmost realism. A painter and sculptor born in Paris, Louis Chalon trained with Jules Lefèvre and Boulanger. He took part regularly in the Salon des Artistes Français, winning honourable mentions in 1885 and 1898 and a third medal in 1891. He also took part in the Paris Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900, receiving honourable mentions in both. He worked as an illustrator for the publications "La vie parisienne", "L'illustration" and "Figaro illustré", and illustrated novels by prominent writers such as Rabelais, Bobbaccio and Balzac. Particularly famous for his work as a sculptor, he was also a goldsmith and designer of theatre costumes. He entered sculpture through his experiments with wax figures in 1898, and since then he has devoted his life to this art. Many of his themes are of mythological origin, although they are treated from a symbolist and modernist point of view, with flower-women, nymphs, etc. Another of his great themes was related to Wagner, triumphant figures of valkyries or characters such as Tanhauser. He worked mainly in bronze, producing objects such as lamps, inkwells, ornamental vases and table clocks. He also made chryselephantine figures, combining bronze with carved ivory. Occasionally he also made furniture.

LOUIS CHALON (Paris, 1866 - 1916). "Tannhäuser". Bronze. Marble pedestal. Signed. With plaque of the Salon des Artistes Français. Size: 64 x 49 x 26 cm. This sculpture represents a scene from the opera Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner, where Tannhäuser is seduced by the goddess Venus during his visit to the Mount of Venus (Venusberg), where the goddess Venus dwells. The plaque bears the inscription "On the Venusberg, he tries in vain to escape from Venus, who enchants him when he finds himself transported to a sacred image of Mary". A painter, illustrator, goldsmith, silversmith and sculptor, Chalon studied with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Boulanger. He exhibited his classically inspired paintings in the salons of the Société des Artistes Français in Paris from 1880 to 1911. Chalon worked, among others, for the art publisher Arthur Goldscheider, who exhibited at the Salon the Printemps de Bretagne and Eclosion models designed by Chalon. He received honourable mentions at the Paris World Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. He produced numerous illustrations for the magazines La Vie Parisienne, L'Illustration and Figaro Illustre, as well as for books by the writers François Rabelais, Giovanni Boccaccio and Honoré de Balzac.

Circa 1900, Louis Chalon (French 1866-1940) a rare and fabulous dore bronze "Fairy" sculpture having a winged nude with 4 butterflies at the bottom, signed "Chalon" with foundry mark "R Colin Paris". Chalon is a well known illustrator and sculptor who also created many interior objects such as lamps, vases, clocks where he uses the them of flower-woman. He exhibited at the Salon of the Society of French Artists, the 1900 World Fair in Paris, the Petit-Palais Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. Size: 24" tall x 13" wide. Condition: Finish shows signs of wear from handling and age. Has unidentified mark and #8.
