WAR OF 1812 HERO ENGRAVINGS

Six engraved images of various sizes (largest, 8-1/2" x 10-1/2" - smallest, 7" x 10"" Included is "Stephen Decatur" by Alonzo Chappel. Stephen Decatur Jr. (1779-1820) was a U.S. naval officer and commodore. Decatur's life and distinguished service in the U.S. Navy came to an early end when in 1820 Commodore James Barron challenged Decatur to a duel. Both of the duelists fell almost at the same instant. Decatur, mortally wounded and clutching his side, exclaimed, "Oh, Lord, I am a dead man." ... plus, "Alexander Macomb" by Longacre. Macomb (1782-1841) was the Commanding General of the United States Army from May 29, 1828, until his death on June 25, 1841. Macomb was the field commander at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 and, after the stunning victory, was lauded with praise and styled "The Hero of Plattsburgh" ..., plus, "Thomas Macdonough" by Chappel. Macdonough, (1783-1825) was an early-19th-century Irish-American naval officer noted for his roles in the first Barbary War and the War of 1812. On November 10, 1825, Thomas Macdonough died aboard the USS Constitution....plus, second engraving by Herring ... plus, "Edward Prebble" by T. Kelly. Preble (1761-1807) was a United States naval officer who served with great distinction during the 1st Barbary War, leading American attacks on the city of Tripoli and forming the officer corps that would later lead the U.S. Navy in the War of 1812. ... plus, "D. Porter by Fry. Porter (1780-1843) was an officer in the United States Navy in the rank of captain and the honorary title of commodore. Porter commanded a number of U.S. naval ships. He saw service in the First Barbary War, the War of 1812 and in the West Indies. On July 2, 1812, Porter hoisted the banner "Free trade and sailors' rights" as captain of USS Essex. The phrase resonated with many Americans. Porter was later court martialed; he resigned and then joined and became commander-in-chief of the Mexican Navy. Porter County, Indiana was named after him.

This painting by Chappel is one of his most well-known works.  The painting was so well received that is was printed by New York publishing firm Johnson, Fry & Company, within the year that it was executed. Additionally, the image is also reproduced in Volume 1 of Life and Times of Washington by Schroeder-Lossing. Property from the Collection of Noel and Kathryn Wadsworth, Atlanta, Georgia Noel and Kathy Wadsworth’s appreciation of American history was captured through their fine art, furniture and decorative arts collection. Noel and his late wife, Kathy, are among the original founders of the Auburn Fine Arts Museum, contributing the gallery that bears their name: The Noel and Kathryn Dickinson Wadsworth Gallery. A portion of their art collection was loaned to the museum and featured in the exhibition, Auburn Collects. The Wadsworth’s curated collection was also featured in Time magazine in the early 1980s.The couple met at Auburn University and were members of the first graduating class in June 1960. Following graduation, they moved to Dalton, Georgia, the epicenter of the American Carpet Industry, where Noel’s career and their family thrived. Philanthropic and community-minded, they eventually settled in Atlanta, Georgia and filled their Marietta home with a collection that spanned from the American Colonial period through Art Nouveau.An interest in American art grew after traveling to exhibitions, fairs and auctions in New York, New Orleans, London, and Paris. The couple collected mostly American fine art from the late 19th and early 20th century with a focus on Ashcan school artists. The Wadsworth’s, however, felt important European artists who were friends of the American artists represented in their collection were also needed to convey the full story of the period. The result became a lifelong decorative and fine art collection that reflects the eye of discerning collectors and will be offered through multiple auctions at Hindman this spring.

ALONZO CHAPPEL (American, 1828-1887) The Mortal Wounding of Major Ringgold at the Battle of Palo Alto, 1846 oil on canvas, 12 x 15 1/2 in., within gilded composition frame Samuel Ringgold (1796-1846) entered the U.S. Military Academy in 1814 and was appointed a second lieutenant of artillery in 1818, serving as the ADC to MG General Winfield Scott for three years. He then embarked on various engineering, ordnance and artillery assignments during his distinguished career, including seeing his first combat during the 2nd Seminole War. While on ordnance duty, Ringgold made improvements in the percussion "hammer" cannon lock that "brought his name before leading military officers and inventors throughout the world." When light artillery companies were formed in 1838-1839 and armed with the new Model 1835 6-pounders, Brevet Major Ringgold's Company C of the 3rd Artillery was the first to be mounted and trained by him as horse or "Flying Artillery" and he was instrumental in the development of a new system of artillery drill that was adopted by the army in 1845. Promoted to major in 1843, he was the senior artillery officer present during the first battle of the Mexican War, Palo Alto, fought on 8 May 1846. A resounding American victory largely credited to the superiority of the American light artillery, which was more mobile and effective in fire than that of their Mexican adversaries. Tragically, while heroically directing the fire of his battery on horseback, he was "struck by a cannonball at right angles hitting him in the right thigh, passing through the holsters and upper part of the shoulders of his horse, and then striking the left thigh…." Mortally wounded, he died three days later at Fort Brown, Texas. In 1858, the talented artist Alonzo Chappel was commissioned by Johnson, Fry and Company to do all of the illustrations for Henry B. Dawson's 2-volume work, Battles of the United States (1858). The resulting paintings and drawings by Chappel became the property of the publishers, one of which was a small oil that was engraved by Thomas Phillibrown and printed in volume 2 as "The Death of Major Ringgold at the Battle of Palo Alto." Lost to history except through the engraving, the original painting—which had lost its identity—was eventually and quietly sold to noted collector Jay Altmayer in 1965 as "US Dragoons" and went "underground", eventually reappearing at auction many years later, where it recognized by this cataloger and purchased for his study collection. Art historian and Chappel biographer, the late (and lamented) David Meschutt wrote (1992) that "Chappel was an excellent draftsman and colorist, who researched his subjects before commiting them to canvas" and that is, indeed, an understatement with regard to this fine piece. Not only did he portray the event accurately, albeit with a modicum of blood, in terms of material details such as artillery and uniforms, but he also captured Ringgold's slow fall from his horse, while LT Shover ran to his assistance (derived from eyewitness accounts). Moreover, Chappel's battle painting is also a masterful portrait of the hero, even if post-mortem, especially when compared with known life portraits of Ringgold (including a Charles Frasier miniature, a Vanderlyn oil, and a John Plumbe daguerreotype, all in family hands at the time and almost certainly made accessible for Chappel's study). Loves of Historic New Jersey, D. Van Nostrand Co., Inc., 1965, p. 104 Note: While much of the story of Molly Pitcher is attributed to folklore, the most common narrative details Mary Ludwig Hays earning her famous nickname at the 1778 Revolutionary War Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey. Mary, along with other women, brought water to the soldiers facing not only the British, but extreme temperatures of the June heat. Legend has it that after Molly's husband was either wounded or suffered heat exhaustion at the height of battle, Molly took his post at the cannon and continued to fight. In this depiction, Molly's husband lies stricken on the ground as she intently mans the muzzle of the cannon holding the ramrod in defiance of the British attackers. In the upper right, General George Washington surveys the battle and the brave Molly from his mount. Artist Alonzo Chappel enjoyed a successful career in art and illustration.
