      Emma Louise (Richardson) Cherry (Kansas, Texas, Colorado, Nebraska / Europe, 1859 - 1954) 1953 still life painting. OIl on board. Signed lower right. Inscribed verso. Cherry had a long list of exhibition credits including the 1893 Chicago Exposition; National Academy of Design; Art Institute of Chicago; Salon des Beaux Arts, Paris 1926; and National Exhibition of American Art at Rockefeller Center, 1937. And occasionally she returned to Nebraska where she was an exhibitor and gold medal winner with the Western Art Association in Omaha. Her work is in Nebraska public collections of Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln; and Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney. Museums representing her work in Texas are the Elisabet Ney Museum, Austin; San Antonio Museum of Art; Witte Museum, San Antonio; The Heritage Society; and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Other museum collections are Colorado Historical Society Denver Art Museum; and John H. Vanderpoel Art Association in Ridge Park, Illinois. Art association memberships were American Federation of Arts, Art Students League of New York, Denver and Houston Art Associations, Society of Independent Artists, Society of Western Artists, Southern States Art Association, and Texas Fine Arts Association.       EMMA RICHARDSON CHERRY (1859-1954) Normandy, 1888 Watercolor 16in. x 20in. Signed, dated, and titled lower right Known for both her portraits and light-infused paintings of landscape and still life scenes, Emma Richardson Cherry was a Texas artist who studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and in New York at the Art Students League under such masters as William Merritt Chase. She studied and exhibited in Italy and France, training at the Academie Julian in Paris and also with Luc-Olivier Merson. Settling in Houston in 1893, Cherry was active in art circles and frequently exhibited her work, earning several awards over the course of her career. Emma Richardson Cherry exhibited extensively during her career. Her shows included the Paris Salon, Art Institute of Chicago, World's Columbian Exposition, Annual Texas Artists Exhibition, Art Association of New Orleans, Annual Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, Annual Cotton Palace Exhibition, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Southern States Arts League, and the Edgar B. Davis Wildflower Competition. At the time of her death at the age of ninety-four, she was the oldest living member of the Art Students League. This light-filled watercolor was painted by Cherry during a trip to France shortly after she was married.
