Kathryn E. Bard Cherry Missouri, (1880-1931) Harbor Scene, Gloucester oil on canvas board signed lower right, gilt-framed. Kathryn Evelyn Bard Cherry (1880-1931) studied painting at a variety of institutes: the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the New York School of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She won many awards as she exhibited across the country, ultimately landing a job as head of the Art Department at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Kathryn most enjoyed operating with a full-spectrum palette featuring bright and cheerful colors in her impressionistic paintings. This fine example of her work that features a colourful yet tranquil scene set in the small idyllic port city of Gloucester in northern Massachusetts--a town known for its scenic beauty that has attracted many artists, writers and film makers. In the foreground we see a couple of fishermen on their boats and the wharf itself followed by larger buildings related to the fishing and shipping industry set next to renditions of colourful and historic homes that line the bay.

Kathryn E. Bard Cherry, Missouri/Illinois (1860-1931), Tulips from Window, oil on canvas

            Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Kathryn E. Bard Cherry Missouri/Illinois, (1860-1931) Tulips from Window oil on canvas signed lower right, gilt-framed. Cherry studied painting at a variety of institutes (the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the New York School of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts) and won many awards as she exhibited across the country, ultimately landing a job as head of the Art Department at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Cherry enjoyed operating with a full-spectrum palette featuring bright and cheerful colors in her impressionistic paintings; and over the course of her life she focussed on one strong theme: a love of nature. Here Cherry created a still life scene that includes much for the viewer to enjoy: over a dozen colourful tulips in various states of bloom held in a rounded royal blue vase, a crisp white and blue decorative table cloth, a small yellow catchall, and through the large square panes of a window we see a calm lake with some sail boats floating at rest. Although several elements in this piece recall classic old-world Dutch painting, perhaps Cherry's optimistic and inviting scene was based on her own view of an inlet within the enormous Lake of the Ozarks, possibly created there while she taught painting at the Ozark Art Colony.

Kathryn Evelyn Bard Cherry Missouri/Illinois, (1860-1931) Honorable Mention, 1904, St. Louis World's Fair oil on canvas on board signed and dated lower right, gilt-framed K. E. Cherry studied painting at a variety of institutes: the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the New York School of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She won many awards as she exhibited across the country, ultimately landing a job as head of the Art Department at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Cherry most enjoyed operating with a full-spectrum palette featuring bright and cheerful colors in her impressionistic paintings; and she focussed on one theme: her love for nature and landscapes. This idyllic example of her work features a tranquil scene set in early 20th c. Forest Park, home of the extraordinary 1904 World's Fair, commemorating the centennial celebration of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase (one hundred years plus one extra year dedicated to the finalization of projects including the construction of 1500 buildings across 1200 acres making this the largest world's fair in history). Instead of basing a painting on something related to the novelties of the fair (the grandiosity of the mass electric lighting of Festival Hall, huge boisterous crowds before the Temple of Mirth on the Pike, the gigantic size of the legendary Ferris Wheel, drinking in a jam-packed biergarten next to the man-made mountain at the Tyrolean Alps exhibit, the introduction of fairy floss and ice cream cones to appease hungry roaming masses or any other ‘amazing' detail from the 100+ exhibits), Cherry's painting focuses on the opposite: a quiet moment of peace and pure tranquility, an arcadian setting dominated by naturalistic shades of greens, greys, and whites. Far removed from the nearly twenty million spectators who attended the fair, here we see a mere handful of elegantly-clad citizens relaxing in a quiet corner of Forest Park, enjoying a warm summer afternoon near the famous sculpted balustrades of the Grand Basin. Classical amphorae atop columns frame part of the scene as do some fanciful trees and mature vegetation masterfully executed in Cherry's impressionistic style. We see her idea of a perfect afternoon in our extraordinary civic park, a powerful invitation to viewers to "meet me in St. Louis."

Provenance: Natchez Art Association. Note: Born in Quincy, Illinois in 1860, Kathryn Cherry began her artistic career as a ceramic painter. Well respected in her field, she earned a gold medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (World’s Fair) in St. Louis in the category of decorated china. She then started exhibiting her works regularly at the Saint Louis Artist’s Guild and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Cherry transitioned in 1915 from painting on china to canvas, a medium that would allow her to explore impressionism, as is evident in the works offered here. Ref.: Williams, Walter.
