      • Chew Teng Beng, Dr. (b. 1938) Green Sinfonia, 2005
        Aug. 25, 2024

Chew Teng Beng, Dr. (b. 1938) Green Sinfonia, 2005

        Est: RM20,000 - RM38,000

A revered artist, academician and art educator, Dr. Chew Teng Beng is a brilliant colourist who has shown finesse in various media - paintings, sculptures, printmaking, batik, and handmade paper. Dr. Chew Teng Beng developed his use of colour to create lyrical abstract paintings that highlight the beauty of nature and represents his personal reflections on philosophy and the spirit. In Green Sinfonia, verdant green colours dazzle and shimmer across the surface created with fluid, spontaneous brushwork. When young, Dr. Chew Teng Beng was awarded the prestigious Frank Sullivan Prize as the Most Outstanding Artist in 1964, and held his first solo at Sullivan's Samat Art Gallery in 1967. From 1968 to 1972, he held solo exhibitions at various venues in the United States. Teng Beng excels not only as an artist and researcher on aesthetics but also as an academician, devising the curriculum for the Siena Heights College in Michigan in the United States, and that of the Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1972, on his return from studies and teaching in the United States. His academic credentials are impressive: PhD, New York University (1983-1986); MFA and BFA, University of Michigan, USA (1967-1970); and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan (Fulbright-Hays scholarship, 1967-1968), where he won the Paul Neal Averill Prize in a juried exhibition of Michigan paintings. In 1993, he was selected for the first Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia. He was honoured with a retrospective by the Penang State Art Gallery in 1998. His other awards included the British Council visitorship (1975), the Australian Government Culture Award (1998). His retrospective was organised by Wisma Kebudayaan SGM in 2023, followed by a book launch at National Art Gallery Malaysia in May 2024. This artwork is donated by Dr. Chew Teng Beng, and 100% of the proceeds (including Buyer's Premium) will be donated to Penang Pure Lotus of Compassion (for the new hospital project).

Chew Teng Beng is an abstract artist well known for his distinct combination of fusing Eastern and Western motifs. He’s an alchemist when it comes to the blending of colours, displaying a strong visual acuity while bringing forth his work’s sense of gentility and sensitivity. A number of his works took inspiration from his travels to exotic places as well as other destinations he’s visited in between the journey. A sought-after Fullbright-Hays scholarship sponsored his art studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1967 until 1968. Due to his excellence in his art studies, he was also able to receive a scholarship from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to further his Bachelor of Fine Arts the following year, followed by his master’s degree. He then went into lecturing life drawing and printmaking in the same university under a teaching fellowship.
