        LIAO CHI-CHUN (TAIWANESE 1902-1976) Tamsui Landscape, 1960 oil on canvas 65 x 81 cm (25 1/2 x 31 3/4 in.) framed dimensions: 82.5 x 98.5 cm (32 1/2 x 38 3/4 in.) signed and dated lower right PROVENANCE Mauricio Nayberg, former Uruguayan Consul in Hong Kong in the 1950s-1960s, acquired from the artist during his stay Paul Perez-Arroyo, Paris, received from the above Private Collection, Paris, acquired from the above by the present owner in 1991 LOT NOTES Mauricio Nayberg met Liao Chi-Chun in Taiwan during an official visit by Nayberg to Taiwan with a cultural delegation. During his post, he collected numerous objects and artworks. Upon completion of his consulship, Consul Nayberg returned to France, before being transferred to the United States. During this time, he gave numerous objects and two paintings by Liao Chi-Chun to his friend Paul Perez-Arroyo in Paris, including the present painting. A similar composition sold at Beaussant-Lefevre on December 9, 2022 (lot 26). An influential Taiwanese painter and sculptor, Liao Chi-Chun studied painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts together with Chen Cheng-po and under the tutelage of Tanabe Itaru, graduating in 1927. Upon his return to Taiwan, Chi-Chun was a respected artist and teacher, and member of numerous art organizations including the Chih-Yang Western Painting Society, the Chidao Association, and the Tai-Yang Art Society. His style evolved over his career, and his works during the 1950s-60s demonstrate his masterful use of color to shape his compositions of the natural world around him. N.B.         Age: LIAO CHI-CHUN(1902-1976)。尺寸( Size):31.5 x 23 cm。 附2001年4月30日劉文三老師證書。材質:油彩、畫布。出版:鄭新卯(2017)。頁47。 拍品描述:廖繼春(1902-1976)生於臺中豐原一清貧農家。曾在公園偶遇正在油畫寫生的人,立刻著迷於濃厚油彩的絢麗顏色,產生對藝術的興趣。後赴東京美術學校深造。並繼承了當時東京美術學校的「外光派」風格,擅長描繪光影與色彩。隨著年紀增長,他對當時畫壇風行的後期印象派、野獸派風格愈發得心應手,其作品逐漸脫離古典。 轉而採用充滿活潑狂放的筆觸和色調,並因為用色鮮明大膽,而被稱為「色彩的魔術師」。廖繼春與陳澄波、顏水龍等東京美術學校出身的藝術家們便接連成立「赤陽洋畫會」、「赤島社」與「臺陽美術協會」等組織,以促進臺灣本土的美術發展。廖繼春在1927年從東京美術學校畢業返台後,於台南長榮中學任教,直到1946年才離開台南。 這段期間,廖繼春經常以台南的市井為入畫的題材,安平港口的色彩,也成為他日後創作重要的養份。 款識:「繼春 一九三六」。
