      • Fatimah Chik (b. Perak, 1947) Untitled, 2015
        Dec. 05, 2021

        Fatimah Chik (b. Perak, 1947) Untitled, 2015

        Est: RM16,000 - RM25,000

Inspired by the symbols and motifs found in Southeast Asia, Fatimah Chik created stunning works by using the technique of Japanese tie and dye, also known as Shiboritik. Poetic interpretations of the motifs of Nusantara reflect the spiritual quality of the mountains represented in intersecting triangular shapes. Fatimah added a new dimension to the batik genre by using motifs inspired by the earth, combined with experimental batik making techniques and unique colours. The name Fatimah Chik is synonymous with contemporary and exceptional Batik textile. Graduating with a Bachelor’s in Design in Textile from Mara Institute of Technology in 1971, the veteran artist is known for her unique Shiboritik technique (Shiboritik = Shibori + Batik), combining the Japanese craft with batik. Her work has been displayed in many exhibitions throughout the years, locally as well as abroad. Aside from being an artist, she is also an educator.

      • Fatimah Chik (b. Johor, 1947) Siri Nusantara, 1990
        Mar. 15, 2020

Fatimah Chik (b. Johor, 1947) Siri Nusantara, 1990

        Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

This Nusantara Series work by Fatimah Chik is intriguing for its colour play, intricate design and subtle overlaps over its core centrifugal mandala. Two squares are tilted at diagonals, one as a light shadow covered at the truncation and the other ooh-so-light as if in the foremost ground piques the composition. In two bands, designs in white simulating khat calligraphy, provide a pattern matric, the peripheral one snuffed out by the diagonal rectangle band. In her Nusantara Series, Timah, as she is better known, draws liberally from her block printings culled from her research and modifications from the cultures of Dayak, Batak, Toradja, Sumba, the Celebes and the Malays. Fatimah Chik has brought great innovations into batik painting with her block printing based on studies of Southeast Asian traditional cultures. She won the Juror’s Choice in the Malaysian level competition of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in 1996 and was chosen for the 3rd Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia, in 1999. She won 1st Prize in the National Sejadah Design competition in Kuala Lumpur in 2002, and 2nd Prize (batik category) in the Permodalan Nasional art competition in 1985. Timah graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Textile) from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1971.

FATIMAH CHIK b. Johor, 1947 RENTAK I, 2004 Batik 89 cm x 76 cm Fatimah Chik is highly regarded as one of the most iconic women artists in Malaysia, specialising in the creation of intricately designed batik – a Malaysian traditional craft produced from waxing and dyeing fabric. Upon graduating with Bachelor of Design in Textile from MARA Institute of Technology in 1971, Fatimah Chik worked at a batik research centre afterwards as a textile designer. She was exposed to Southeast Asian textile designs while accompanying her husband to study at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu during year 1975 - 1977. There, she realised the value and beauty of Southeast Asian traditional motifs and designs, in which she incorporated into batik throughout the rest of her artistic career. For example, her signature triangular symbolic motif (inverted in this artwork) is derived from the gunungan (Mountain) motif originated from the Nusantara or Malay Archipelago region. By blending in indigenous aesthetics and symbols, her batiks transform into richly cultured and distinct abstract paintings, successfully pushing the evolution of batik from just craft into fine art. As a dedicated and committed art educator, she has taught batik art at MARA Institute of Technology, Malaysian Institute of Art, as well as Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex which is operated by the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia). Fatimah Chik’s artworks are widely sought after by museums, banking institutions, hotels, individual art collectors and so on both locally and internationally. She has also displayed her creations in exhibitions organised in the ASEAN region, Japan, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
