      Ink and colors on paper Mounted as a scroll painting in a silk brocade frame Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912), 19th century NAKABAYASHI Chikkei (1816-1867) - Japanese artist Two depictions of crabs and a lobster Dimensions: 173 x 45 cm This scroll painting from Meiji-era Japan by the Japanese artist NAKABAYASHI Chikkei (1816-1867) features two summer still lifes depicting crabs and lobsters, respectively. The paper base has been mounted on silk in san-dan style, using celadon-colored donsu (non-patterned brocade) silk and rough woven silk. The ends (jiku) of the scroll are made of turned wood. The scroll painting is signed by NAKABAYASHI Chikkei and features Seigyo and Shoubun seals. Condition: The crab painting displays a moisture stain, as does the top of the mounting. The bottom section of the mounting with stains. The dimensions are 173 x 45 cm (length x width). NAKABAYASHI Chikkei (1816-1867) NAKABAYASHI Chikkei was born as the son of the noted literati painter NAKABAYASHI Chikudo. During his youth Chikkei studied under YAMAMOTO Baiitsu, also a noted literati painter known for his bird and flower pieces. Although his works display soft pastel tones and generally exude calmness, Chikkei was known for his erratic behavior. Within the last few decades, appreciation for Chikkei's works has gradually increased. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
