        • TANOMURA CHIKUDEN (1777 – 1835): CLIFFS, CANYON, TEMPLE AND EQUESTRIANS
          Sep. 17, 2016

TANOMURA CHIKUDEN (1777 – 1835): CLIFFS, CANYON, TEMPLE AND EQUESTRIANS

          Est: €500 - €1,400

Painting with ink and colours on silk. Japan, 18th to early 19th cent. Fine and detailed painting by ink brush, the colours flat and transparent. The strictly vertical composition offers exciting renditions – on one side intense due to the dangerous high cliffs and narrow canyon passages, but also presenting harmonious moods of the paths leading to higher consciousness. The temple buildings rest eternally and at ease on top of rocks appearing to break down at any moment. A white summit in the background, narrow and of about finger width, pointing towards the heavens. On the exposed path leading over bridges are numerous equestrians fighting their way up, while a man in the pavilion on the side of the river overviews the scene. On the upper left is a rather long inscription – the artists writing style justly reflects his precision. A signature left below the inscription - CHIKU-DEN KEN 竹田 憲, the Ken derived from his extended name Ko-ken. The artist, however, is mostly known by the name Tanomura Chikuden. Red seal Chikuden. He worked for the ruler of Bungo, a province at the time, and roamed the landscape there for years as study for his work, but eventually joined the rebel farmers and afterwards became an autonomous literary and calligrapher. Brocade mounting in outstanding condition, ivory end knobs, box included. PAINTING SIZE 118 x 30,4 CM, SCROLL 194,5 x 42,5 CM From a Swiss collection
