KISHI CHIKUDO (1826–1897): PEACOCK AND SPARROWS

      Est: €1,200 - €2,400

Painting on silk. Japan, 19th cent.A bird sits on a pine branch expressively in the center, with its back to the viewer, thus exhibiting the full splendor of its plumage. In Japanese called kujaku, it is the emblem of the deity Kujaku Myo-o. The head is in profile and flaunts a bold crest. Also particularly lovely is the composition of pine trunk and branches with diagonals crossing over the entire picture field. This large painting stages humorously the counteraction of two sparrows, one peeking curiously from behind the tree, the other flying. Right below signature CHIKU-DO 竹 堂 and red seal. brocade framing, ivory rollers.PICTURE 130 x 55 CM, SCROLL 206 x 70 CMFrom a German collection
