        An antique 19th century color lithograph Tigress by the Japanese artist Kishi Chikudo, 1826 to 1897. The Kishi school is well-known for its superior paintings of animals, especially the tiger. Printed on a smooth wove paper. Lithographer: George Harris and Sons. Published by George Barrie, Philadelphia, 1894. George Barrie, from 1893 to 1895 was the Philadelphia printer and publisher, and worked upon a large and lavish series of original etchings and chromolithographs detailing exhibits of the fine art from participating countries at the Worlds Columbian Exposition. Kishi Chikudo (1826-1897), Kyoto, Japan Born in Omi province, Kishi Chikudo was a Japanese-style painter who first learnt paintings from Kano Eigaku, then Kishi Renzan from whom he took his name.In 1896 he was appointed to the Art Committee of the Imperial Household, he specialised in landscapes and animals, especially tigers.

Also particularly lovely is the composition of pine trunk and branches with diagonals crossing over the entire picture field. This large painting stages humorously the counteraction of two sparrows, one peeking curiously from behind the tree, the other flying.
