Demetre Chiparus Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor

Romanian artist Demetre Chiparus became one of the most significant artists of the Art Deco movement, through combining bronze and ivory in what is known as the chryselephantine technique. Born in 1886, he studied in Italy before attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he refined his style. French fashion and theater, Eqyptian culture, and the dancers of France and Russia were influential to his style, as the bulk of his work centers on female dancing figures. Noted for their agile, slender bodies that evoke graceful motion, Demetre Chiparus's sculptures of female dancers feature decorative detail.

Demetre Chiparus sculptures and artwork for sale are not limited to dancers, as his early works include realistic renderings of children, which he exhibited in the Salon in Paris. It is, however, the Art Deco bronze and ivory statues of dancers for which he is most renowned. You can find notable artists' sculptures available online and at auction.

He already used a combination of materials, bronze and ivory, which from then on would be frequent in his production. Throughout his career he exhibited only occasionally at the Paris Salon, and during World War II he was forced to interrupt his production. By the early 1940s his work had virtually no audience, but the artist continued to sculpt for himself, producing animal figures in the Art Deco style. In 1942 and 1943, Chiparus exhibited his sculptures "Polar Bear", "American Bison" and "Pelican" at the Salon. It is this posture, added to the lightness of the forms, the features that reveal the skill of the author. Dance and dancing were among the main entertainments of Western society in the early twentieth century, so it became one of the most recurrent themes of art, as well as in the sculptural plane allowed to reflect the technical progress and skill of the author. Born in Dorohoi, Romania, Chiparus is currently the most appreciated sculptor of the Art Deco period. He began his training in 1909 in Italy, where he was taught by the sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he moved to Paris and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where his teachers were Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher.
