Il s’agit de la première édition en français du Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director de Chippendale, basée sur la troisième édition, corrigée et enrichie. L’édition originale, qui date de 1754, ne comprenait que 161 planches, contre 200 ici. Après une étude des différents ordres architecturaux, on trouve notamment des représentations de bibliothèques, de lits, de canapés, de miroirs, ou encore d’écrans de cheminées. In-folio (452 x 297 mm). Titre, dédicace gravée (1 p.), préface (2 pp.), 23 pp. de description des planches (A-G^2), et 200 planches gravées d’après Chippendale (déchirure marginale sans perte à la planche n° CXCVII ; rousseurs et brunissures éparses). Reliure de l'époque : vélin rigide, décor estampé à froid évoquant les reliures du XVIe siècle, titre à l’encre sur le dos, tranches mouchetées (importante mouillure avec traces de moisissure sur le premier plat). Property from a Savannah, GA Estate Description: Stained Beechwood Settee Attributed to Thomas Chippendale Junior, c.1780, the upholstered back, sides and seat within a beaded frame, the top rail later carved with a ribbon, the out scrolled armrest front with a flower head within a beaded surround, raised on tapering fluted legs ending in casters. Measurements: Height: 36 in. x Width: 82 in. x Depth: of seat 25 in. Condition: Good condition, formerly gilded or painted and now stained, the top rail now inset with a later central ribbon tied garland, scuffs and wear to arms, downswept support with age cracks to lower sections, traces of gesso or paint to crevasse of carving, center left leg bowed outwards. Set of four chairs, Chippendale style; mid 20th century. Carved wood. Damaged carving and upholstery. Measurements: 97 x 49 x 46 cm (x4). Set formed by four chairs inspired by the work of the English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), main representative of the British rococo. The chairs repeat models typical of English Rococo, although with a taste for ornamentation that indicates a more advanced design. Thomas Chippendale created a new style of luxurious furniture that became very popular, and which perfectly represented the personality of the English Rococo. His designs were also very popular in the mid to late 19th century, giving his name to a new style that was cultivated into the 20th century. This new Chippendale style even gave rise to sub-genres such as Chinese Chippendale, Gothic and Irish Chippendale. The Chippendale style developed from about 1750, and although it began to decline in London around 1765, it was only then that it began to spread outside the capital, and indeed it was to enjoy a great deal of development in outlying centres for the rest of the century. The Chippendale style is composed of rococo features of French origin, Gothic and Chinese elements, mixed either separately, all together or only two of them. It will therefore be a very varied and heterogeneous style, but nevertheless, with the passage of time, in the recreations of the 19th and 20th centuries, it will be clearly identifiable by elements such as the typical openwork chair spades, which we see here. In fact, Chippendale was the creator of the "new pattern" model, a new model of chair that would become the dining chair par excellence, and which is characterised above all by its paddle based on the ribbon backrest.

Set of eight Chippendale style chairs, England, 19th century. Structure in wood and upholstery in fabric. This piece belongs to the collection of the Hotel Marbella Club. Measurements: 106 x 54 x 48 cm. Set of eight chairs inspired by the work of the English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), the main representative of British Rococo. The chairs repeat models typical of English rococo, although with a taste for ornamentation that indicates that we are dealing with a more advanced design, clearly historicist. Thus, the carving is more profuse than in the 18th century models, and the structural curve is accentuated in such a way that it even affects the waist. On the other hand, we see typical elements of the Chippendale style, such as the openwork and carved shovel, or the cabriole legs. Thomas Chippendale created a new style of luxury furniture that became very popular, and that perfectly represented the personality of the English Rococo. This is one of the rare EXTRA ILLUSTRATED COPIES, WITH A TOTAL OF 212 PLATES (When the third edition was published only 95 of the 161 plates of the first edition were retained and 105 new plates were added for a total of 200. "Up to 12 extra alternative plates are found in some copies (as in ours). These are numbered: 25, 36, 45, 49, 67, 68, 153, 159, 167, 171, 179, 187.). Folio, PP:xxviii(including title page, Dedication, etc.), Plus 212 plates. Half leather, rubbed; the gutta-percha glue has as often perished, hence all loose. title page, a couple of the plates and few of the preliminary pages frayed and with light dust stains & small tears.

(Light occasional spotting throughout, heavier staining to half-title, last plate unevenly browned.) Recent red half morocco. FIRST EDITION OF CHIPPENDALE'S HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL FURNITURE PATTERN BOOK; 'all [of his] known commissions ... date from after its appearance. It was also highly influential in disseminating his designs throughout Britain, Europe, and the colonies' (ODNB). RIBA 631 (second edition).

Engraved dedication to Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and 200 plates, all after Chippendale. (Title lightly creased and spotted, light spotting and browning throughout.) Contemporary calf (sometime rebacked and corners repaired, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Hugh (ink ownership inscription dated 1819 to title and crossed out). THIRD AND BEST EDITION. Chippendale's work was first published in 1754 (with 161 plates; see lot 361). It was an immediate success and a second edition followed in 1755. The present edition was the last to be published during Chippendale's lifetime. He revised and updated a number of the plates and added enough wholly new material to increase the total number of plates to 200 (8 explanatory plates and 192 plates of designs; plates 147 and 148 are misnumbered CXLVI and CXLVII respectively).

A Fabulous Quality Mahogany Tripod Table, Circa 1760 of fine colour and patination in the manner of Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1779). The tilt-top having an impressive deeply carved pie-crust & cleft edge. The crisply carved stop-fluted column and acanthus carved baluster above three cabriole legs carved at the hip with foliage. Terminating on elegant ball & claw feet 28¾ ins (73 cms) in height, 26½ ins (67 cms) in diameter. [Similar example of the base in 'British Antique Furniture' by John Andrews, Antique Collectors Club, 1989, p.355, fig.892 and 'The Dictionary of English Furniture' by Ralph Edwards, Volume III, p156, fig. 4].
