Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki 1726 Danzig - 1801 Berlin - 12 Blätter zu Shakespear's Hamlet - 12 Kupferstiche/Papier. Jeweils 8,5 x 5,2 cm (Passepartoutausschnitt). Passepartout. Unter Glas gerahmt (ein Rahmen). Gebräunt. - Lit.: Th.-B.

On the left in the centre ground a gentleman and a lady with a wind chime are walking to the right; on the right an old hunchbacked Jew with a large poodle jumping in front is walking to the left." (Engelmann 1857, p. 400). This rare set is not a set in the true sense of the word, in which six different depictions are printed from six copper plates. Rather, Chodowiecki used only one copper plate and continued to elaborate it by adding different figures. Before each addition, he printed the plate, which resulted in this extraordinary series. Engelmann notes that the artist created "this plate on the occasion of a police decree that everyone must lead their dog on a lead in the streets" (Engelmann 1857, p. 400). Here the second state with the signature in the first version: "Behind the lady a jockey is pulling back a hound with effort, which is running after the Bolognese. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726 Gdansk - 1801 Berlin): The works of darkness, 1781, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Date: 1781 Description: Proof before all writing. From the middle of the 18th century at the latest, the growing demand for new reading material among the emancipated middle classes fuelled not only literary culture, but also piracy. Copyright law was not introduced in Germany until 1837, and so illegally published reprints supplied the public, to the detriment of authors and publishers. The present sheet by Chodowiecki, commissioned by the bookseller and publisher Himburg, expresses the evil in satirical drasticness. A well-fed pirate printer takes off the honest publisher's shirt while Justitia sleeps at his feet. The declamatory pose of the robbed publisher makes him appear as a steadfast hero of virtue, but he remains the fool, as the picture lacks any hint of an end to this injustice. An unintentionally ironic fact, which many contemporary viewers would have been aware of, is that the publisher Himburg, who commissioned the paper calling for honesty, was himself one of the pirate printers. In 1775, for example, he had Goethe's Werther reprinted without authorisation - Chodowiecki supplied the engravings. Provenance: Literature: Engelmann, Wilhelm: Daniel Chodowiecki's Sämmtliche Kupferstiche; Leipzig 1857. Cat. Rais. No.: 394 I/II.
