      • Anthonie Chong (b. 1971) E-monk Portrait Series: Chinese Lady, 2000
        May. 19, 2024

Anthonie Chong (b. 1971) E-monk Portrait Series: Chinese Lady, 2000

        Est: RM4,500 - RM7,500

In E-Monk, a pair of figures are being presented in an idealised form, painted in a bold palette of blue and red hues. Drawing inspiration from eastern culture, the figures are carefully modelled with smooth, refined strokes against a blue colour backdrop. The red coloured collar of the lady's dress adds a touch of vitality to the composition. Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1991. He won the Philip Morris Asean Art Award, Malaysia in 1998. In 2000, he switched to caricature-like iconography fusing eastern surrealism with digital technology, namely his e-monk creations which morphed into @-monk in 2010, which was represented in three series - Community, Gaia and Mechanism. He had his first solo at the X Pub and Gallery in Penang. He had worked as an art teacher (Art Design, Kuala Lumpur), graphic designer, illustrator and lecturer at Art Direction (1992-1995), before helping out a relative in his business.

        Anthonie Chong (b. 1971) Monumental - Agony

        Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

Executed in a subdued palette, Monumental - Agony depicts a seated man on a bench with his head lowered downwards against a stark background, therefore achieving an elusive quality. The contrast of dark umber colours and the light colours of the flesh convey a sense of fragility. A sense of stillness is evoked in the composition, made up of the placement of the human form in a deserted space using thick strokes of oil paint, which forms a unique matt texture. Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1991. He won the Philip Morris Asean Art Award, Malaysia in 1998. Anthonie Chong (b. 1971) Morning, 1998

        Est: RM13,000 - RM23,000

A new day beckons to a pubescent girl, half-naked with a big bed all to herself. With hands outstretched as if yawning, and a song in her heart, she rejoices at her physical development. You can imagine, say, Will.i.am crooning, It's A New Day, in the background. She is on the cusp of exciting times, and the world is her oyster. But in classic Anthonie Chong fashion of building up tensions in innocuous situations, is everything really that hunky-dory? Or is it just some voyeur binge for the viewers? Anthonie Chong first elicited attention in his second solo at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, in July 1997 (his first was at a pub in Penang). He became a major figurative artist of 'strangers' in awkward situations, just after graduating with a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in Ipoh. In 1998, he won one of the Malaysian awards in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards. He switched to cartoon iconography called e-monk in 2000.

        Anthonie Chong (b. 1971) Untitled, 1995

        Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

A naked man on a rattan settee with his right leg bent and raised onto the seat, his eyes transfixed rightwards. Something there, or someone? His bored dour expression suggests a mundane everyday ritual, maybe watching TV with its usual insipid fare. The reclusive Anthonie Chong has developed a Hitchcockian effect of psychological dramas in his figures of distracting ghoulish splatters even just after graduating from the Perak Institute of Art. Here, the lone figure is too cleanly defined for comfort, though the coarse dry pigment grates a tension. This, perhaps, is to emphasise the drab domestic life, the ennui, especially for starting-out low-income bachelors. Whatever the spartan setting, nothing beats one's own place, never mind dullness about: the wane yellow walls and the cheap blue seat covers. Prison or palace, maybe a bit of both. Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1990, and had his first solo at X Pub and Gallery in Penang, in 1994. He had a modicum of success when in 1998, he won the Malaysian-level of the Philip Morris Asean Art Award. But such Baconesque figures took an emotional toll on him, and he decided to abandon them in 2000, for animated characters morphing into e-monk based on the Ne-Zha legend. The Singapore Art Museum gave him a solo, Naked Perfection, in 2002. His last solo, e-monky, was at Artfolio Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

        Anthonie Chong (b. 1971) Siblings 1, 1997

        Est: RM15,000 - RM28,000

The composition focuses on a pair of isolated figures in a worn-out state rendered in the artist's distinct imagery. The sumptuous colour palette of red, yellow, and blue is characteristic of Anthonie's style. By painting human forms in fluid brushstrokes, his art offers a sense of realistic depth and solid volume. Drawing inspiration from social realism, Anthonie Chong is revered for surreal scenes focusing on the human experience. The carefully constructed figures are Anthonie's experimentation of composition, medium and colour. Anthonie Chong graduated with a Diploma, majoring in Graphic Design, at the Perak Institute of Art in Ipoh in 1990. He had worked for short spells as an art teacher, graphic designer and illustrator, but thrives mainly as a practicing artist who likes to work in series. He held his first of six solos at the X Pub and Gallery in Penang in 1994, and was even given a solo at the Singapore National Museum in 2002, called Naked Perfection. He won the Malaysian level award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in 1998.

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Anthonie Chong has become a byword for figures with an unsettling dark, psychology edge at least in the earlier years of his career. The figure rendered in yellow ochre with busy staccato impastos on the top half, as if to suggest depth and posture nuances, makes for an interesting reading. A unique sense of space and texture is created with thick layers of paint and gestural strokes, capturing the sitter's essence. Painted in the artist’s iconic style of this period, the artwork illustrates a sombre figure looking down as if giving up is the only option, immersed in his own sadness the figure is left static in his seat, in agony emotionally. Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1991. He won the Philip Morris Asean Art Award, Malaysia in 1998. We see a distorted image of a man as though he is anxiously moving left and right. Perhaps waiting for something or worried about things around him. The gloomy background gives a sense of melancholy to the viewers and make the whole piece look dramatic. Anthonie Chong graduated with a Diploma, majoring in Graphic Design, at the Perak Institute of Art, Ipoh in 1990. It was a phase after college (first half of the 1990s) that Anthonie Chong created a macabre slew of naked figures with striated flaked white paint and stripped of all pretence. Like “bare-forked animals”, male and female, often singly. Here, a ‘Delilah’ is running and running, probably reverse-chased by a ‘Samson’. Running in the dead of the night on a rickety platform with a diagonal slant (a favourite device of his) to subvert the view. Why, and in full buff and the ashen face, it’s not for us to know, but you could almost hear the thumping sounds of running feet adding to the dramatization. There may be some vicarious thrill in the viewer, and one suspects, the creator too… such is human nature. It may not have been the best of starts to hold one’s solo at the X Pub and Gallery (Penang, 1994) after Anthonie Chong graduated with a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in Ipoh (1990). But in 1998, he won the Malaysian award of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards. In 2000, he switched to cartoon iconography called e-monk fusing eastern surrealism with digital technology, with his last show on this at Artfolio, Kuala Lumpur in 2009. He even had a solo, Naked Perfection, at the Singapore Art Museum in 2002. He had worked as an art teacher, graphic designer and illustrator. His 1990s works are very much sought after by collectors.

A person next to an incomplete stump of a sculpture stood on a metal rod, is used as an allegory of an uncertain and yet-unformed future in the pursuit of art. The lean figure in a sports jacket looks forlorn, and not any better off than the deformed and spastic sculpture nearby, shown without full lower limbs and head. The sculpture’s rough surfaces are to become a trademark of his painted portraits. Such patchy paintwork with deeply psychological scars and aggression proved much more sought-after than the artist’s more polished and refined e-monk series from the year 2000. Born in Perak in 1971, Anthonie Chong studied at the Chinese Independent School. It was during his studies that he was exposed to Chinese calligraphy and cultural motifs in art. He then advanced to the Perak Institute of Art where he obtained the knowledge of Western art history and other art ideologies such as social realism. He had his first solo exhibition at X-pub & Gallery in Penang and have had more in years after. Anthonie Chong often expresses his paintings based on experiences of the difficulties and predicament of living in the globalised and digital age. He is known for his famous works inspired by ÔNarjarÕ- a tale based on a Chinese legend about a brave child- which in turn produced the e-monk series in the year 2000. The series tackle issues with regards to living in a technocratic era and through the series, he amalgamates Eastern techniques in his works. He also transgresses a recollection of childhood memories in his paintings. ÔA spiritual release and desire for eternal peaceÕ was the main narrative of the e-monk series. In 2008, the Gaia series was produced, mused by nature in which he then focuses on the elements of nature such as fire, earth, water, wood and metal.

It’s an innocuous image of three nubile girls apparently in stripe uniform playing in front of a building, a school? The one with the hair tied in a horsetail and in red fluttering skirt is skipping down the wide steps towards the two seated in front, both holding something in their hands, one raising it with both hands. Knowing Anthonie Chong with his habit of conveying underlying tensions in his figures, this is not a happy rendition of girls at play with all the innocence, but has some sexual and disturbing overtones, in the mind of the voyeur – the artist, you and I. Or could it be something more sobering, the ‘Trinity’ referred to in his first one-man show at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, in July 1997. Self-portraits often tell too much, or too little. The way the ‘sitter’, or ‘stander’, as the case may be, is rendered is sometimes beyond the artist’s control, given a full rein of how he or she wants to be portrayed. Autobiographical, there is the psychology element of the unconscious, for the artist cannot possible conceal that which is within as much as the intention is clear. Self-portraits have been a favourite of artists since the Renaissance, which is part vanity and partly to project the subject as a persona to be seen. Notable self-portraits include those of Vincent Van Gogh (Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear), Courbet (The Desperate Man), Munch (Self-Portrait With Skeleton Arm) and Frida Kahlo (Self-Portrait With Thorn Necklace And Hummingbird). The colour palette (cheery or sombre), execution, demeanour and mood of the portraited. Here, the one shown up to the chest to focus on the face, looks glum even piqued, troubled, and disgruntled, while the background is rendered in pale lemon yellow. It is a left-brain pigment that can evoke emotions veering between joy and anxiety.Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1991. The mere ordinariness of a moment of an ordinary enough ‘action’ as sitting down half-naked and flipping through a book or a magazine, can pose multiple meanings in an Anthonie Chong post-PIA (Perak Institute of Art) canvas. There is the ennui, or a feeling of curiosity or jadedness. There’s a slouchy gesture with one hand behind the chair’s back as the evidently tall chap, even when seated down, peruse the content of the pages, which looks like images. Are they something arty, a Life magazine spread perhaps, or maybe something more salacious. But the whole painting is about the mood evoked, the action is just a distraction. It is undoubtedly one of the best pieces painted by the artist in 1990s.

In full flush of Baconesque splatters, Anthonie Chong creates solitary avuncular forms in garish chrome or peachy reddish-brown hues that meld walls, objects and subject in a squishy lather. The play of pigments is more than just a camouflage of the original intent, but an expressionist splurge, with a certain aggro if not anger. Yet, the figure is not moving or in action, but sedated like in a Xanadu state, raising a toast to himself perhaps, to the whole ludricity of the situation. It’s a personal mirror, within four walls, and a lark and a laugh. These gestural splurges were done after Anthonie Chong graduated from the Perak Institute of Art with a Diploma in Graphic Design in Ipoh in 1990, and before he staged his first solo, at the X Pub and Gallery in Penang in 1994. When he won the Malaysian level award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in 1998, it was a time of awkward figures in bland, ordinary situations. In 2000, he switched to caricature-like iconography fusing eastern surrealism with digital technology, and celebrating it with his third solo titled ‘e-monk Art In Town’ at RAP, Kuala Lumpur. This early work reveals Anthonie Chong as a major figurative artist with a fragile temperament and deeply psychological impulses. There are two poles, one of Realism and the other with eddying textures that enhance the drama. Here, the mother is shown awkwardly snatching away her child, who has a perplexed look about him. Despite her protective nature, the child does not look comfortable. Anthonie Chong puts his signature in a sloping slant on the upper right of the woman's head.Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1990. Est: RM10,000 - RM15,000

“Art is something that cannot be explained, beyond the fact that it involves creativity from within.” – Anthonie Chong   In this extraordinary work, the crouching figure is placed in isolation, which strips him from narrative and symbolization. The subject consciously gazes into the distance, in search of something unknown. The violent sensations are rendered visible through the liberation of lines and colours from their respective functions. Flesh of the body is depicted in broken tones, incorporating variations of textures and colours. The vigorous paint strokes of black, hints of turquoise and red accents used to fill in the background further heightens the intense, dynamic quality.   Through experiences of the complexities and dilemma of living in a globalized and technocratic age, Chong created the @-monk series in the year 2000s, which is inspired by ‘Narjar’ a brave child character from an ancient Chinese legend. The series is integrated with Eastern posturing techniques, which aims to communicate to the spectator a recollection of childhood memories. The @-monk characters not only narrate a story but also depict ‘a spiritual release and desire for eternal peace.’   In 2008, the nature inspired Gaia series was conceived and consists of five elements that of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The child is depicted interacting with elements of nature, fully present in the moment enjoying the wonders of his surroundings. The @-Monk series consists of four major series; E-gen series, Community series, Gaia series and Mechanism series.   Chong received his formal education at the Perak Institute of Art, majoring in graphic art. Exposure to western art movements such as social realism has profoundly influenced his artistic practice. Chong’s works have been collected by private collectors and museums, such as the Singapore Art Museum and National Art Gallery, Malaysia. Chong’s work My Father’s Son I and II was featured in Naked Perfection, an exhibition held in 2002 by Singapore Art Museum, which aimed to explore the “tensions, expectations and intrigue of nudity and nakedness in art”. Chong has recently exhibited in Life-Lines: Works from the Life Drawing Community KL, organized by Xin Art Space, which featured original drawings and paintings from ten artists on the study of the human form.   REFERENCE http://biotechnics.org/2wee_kong_chai.html https://kahleongchong.wordpress.com/biodata/
