        Chong Siew Ying (b. 1969) Faces, 2002

        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

An assortment of enigmatic smiling faces is painted in opulent colours of warm orange and passionate red hues contrasted with shades of cool purple. The sophisticated arrangement of painterly forms stands out against a minimal background of earthy hues. Delightful colours were used to reflect pure emotion and bliss, creating a strong impact. Chong Siew Ying's art-career path is one of grit, determination and serendipity. Many would have stayed put after a Graphic Design diploma at the Petaling Jaya College of Art and Design. Instead Chong hightailed to Paris, where she worked as an au pair, to support her art studies at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and L'Atelier 63 (1994-1996), and with solos at the Maison Tch'A, Atelier d'Maravel and Gallery Café Panique, to boot. On her return, she won an artist's residency at Rimbun Dahan, and later the Fremont Fellowship at Vermont Studio Centre, United States. In 2002, she won the Special Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition and in 2009, was a finalist in the Hong Kong Sovereign Art Prize. She also had her solo at Valentine Willie Fine Art, and at The Edge Galerie a few years back.

Chong Siew Ying (b. 1969) The Enchanted, Urban Life Series, 1997-2000

        Est: RM25,000 - RM40,000

The Self is under siege, what with rapid urbanisation, dehumanising technology and the proliferation of social media with the advent of the Internet in 1990. To a woman sensitive to changes, these are detrimental to self and family. In her slew of series like The Poem, Nostalgie and Urban Life, Chong Siew Ying, known for her androgynous figures, reflects on what is real and unreal, the substance and the shadows, the void and the illusions, and the complexities of an increasingly obdurate world. The Self can be wistful like a wraith, an undecipherable blob or a mere silhouette against the blue yonder. What animates the self is humanism, thoughts and emotions, inhibitions and dare, hopes and fears. Chong Siew Ying's art-career path is one of grit, determination and serendipity. Chong Siew Ying's dreamy monochrome of an evocative landscape is expressed with an aura of passing time and memory. The silhouette of distant mountains and trees seemingly swaying in the wind seem couched between Chinese landscape painting and Western pictorialism of depth and space. The artist's forte lies in the adroit play of the myriad shades of grey for atmospherics and a contemplative mood. Chong Siew Ying's art-career path is one of grit, determination and serendipity. Est: RM13,000 - RM22,000

Born in 1969 in Kuala Lumpur, Chong Siew Ying left Malaysia for France in 1990 to pursue her studies in Fine Art. There, she enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts de Versailles and later at the Parisian printmaking centre, Atelier63. Returning to Malaysia in 1998, she held her first solo show in Kuala Lumpur in the same year. From 2000 - 2001, she travelled to the United States of America where she spent 7 months in New York City and 2 months at the Vermont Studio Centre in Vermont. She returned to Paris in 2001 and travelled back and forth between Paris and Kuala Lumpur until 2011. She has since moved back permanently to Kuala Lumpur. Chong Siew Ying’s practice is grounded in both Eastern and Western painterly sensibilities. Although well known for her dynamic gestural brush strokes and expressive compositions, she continues to develop new techniques and approaches to subject matter to explore painting as a distinct form of visual poetry. A lyrical and elegant painter, her work is profoundly emotive, embracing broad themes such as nature, human sentiments, as well as referencing literary themes and concepts. As a restless and curious artist, travel continues to be an important influence on her practice.

Chong Siew Ying (b. 1969) Motherland Jungle, 2005

        Est: RM7,000 - RM12,000

In this work, the figures are rendered with weight and solidity, perhaps also reminding one of nature personified as the source and guiding force of creation. Mother Nature needs to be preserved well. The jungle / forest / habitat of the natives shouldn't be threatened, affected by man made causes, in the name of development. Chong Siew Ying first studied for her Diploma in Graphic Design at the Petaling College of Art and Design but impetuously decided to continue her studies in Paris in 1990, at the L' Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and then L'Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working part time as an au pair. Two artist's residences - Rimbun Dahan, Selangor (1999-2000) and the Vermont Studio Centre, United States (2001, Freeman Asian Artist Fellowship) proved timely in her taking stock as well as tiding over her financial struggles. In 2002, she won a Special Awards in the highly coveted Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition, and she was a finalist in the Hong Kong Sovereign Art Prize in 2009. She was featured in Art Stage Singapore in 2015 (Being Human: Figuratism Of 16 Malaysian Artists). Even before she held her first solo in Kuala Lumpur of her selected works 1996-1997 in 1998, she had solos in Paris, namely at the Maison TCH'A, Atelier D' Maraval and Gallery Cafe Panique. Her solos in Malaysia include Crying With Trees (2014), Infinity (2011), Idylle: New Paintings (2008), Many Splendoured Things (2006), and Going Away, Coming Home (2002).

The road is lonely, dark and deep, and fraught with perils and imponderable. Several may take the self-same road of sharply etched edges at the sides, but with different experiences, even endings. In Journey from Chong Siew Ying's 2011 Infinity oeuvre, the deserted road (pebbled?) funnels far, far ahead to a plethora of mists, hills and mountain tops, and a regiment of stratus clouds. Eyes are deceiving. Many things we see are not what they are. Many things we don't see are the substance of shadows. The stark black-and-white realism offers a hint of mystery and danger. The journey of life is often filled with ups and downs, but no matter what, we have to move on with faith, hope, and love. Chong Siew Ying's art-career path is one of grit, determination and serendipity. Many would have stayed put after a Graphic Design diploma at the Petaling Jaya College of Art and Design. Chong Siew Ying's bold figures have opened new vistas into the exploration of painting. Her portraits often depict enigmatic smiling faces which form an essential part of her artistic language. Rich in expression, this panoramic image presents figures merged seamlessly against a backdrop of a pristine beach landscape. What animates the self is humanism, thoughts and emotions, inhibitions and dare, hopes and fears. Chong Siew Ying's art-career path is one of grit, determination and serendipity. With an androgynous look on the face fully flushed to picture frame, it is difficult to tell the gender, even with a decided feminine aura. The bald pate serves to enhance the features of the face, if not the expression, and the rendition in grey seems to simulate the veracity of photographs. In her multiple faces-and-figures composition like this one in the Many Splendoured Thing exhibition, Chong Siew Ying explores the entity of faces as landscape with elements of mystery and beauty, and with an ornamental plum blossom or two. She had intoned: "I like the idea of telling a story that has no beginning or end." The face skirts the line between the Classical and the Contemporary, a fusion as well as a contradiction. On beauty, she added: "This beauty is somewhat forced, as it seems to be that beauty in contemporary art has almost become taboo," As Oscar Wilde put it: "Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter." The sentiment still holds, even if the 'sitter' is not real-life. The world belongs to the bold and the brave, that's Chong Siew Ying who headed for France for further art studies, at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Versailles, 1991-1994) and L'Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working as an au pair part-time. Proof of faith was when she was given solos at the Maison Tch'A, Atelier d'Maravel and Gallery Café Panique, while also keeping busy with the prints biennials in France, Spain, Holland and Taiwan. On her return in 2000, she was awarded the artist's residency at Rimbun Dahan, which was followed by another at the Vermont Studio Centre (Freeman Fellowship). Accolades included the Special Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition (2002), a finalist in the Hong Kong Sovereign Art Prize (2009). She was featured in the 2015 Art Stage Singapore. Her work was featured in the Malaysian Shadows and Images travelling exhibition in Malmo (Sweden), Barcelona and Madrid (Spain). Chong Siew Ying (b. 1969) Untitled, 2002

        Est: RM22,000 - RM38,000

Chong Siew Ying is like the queen of Bian Lian, the Chinese wizardry of face swapping dating back some three centuries, to the time of the Sung. But the difference is that the faces, often in demented and hilarious laughter, are not masks like in Sichuan Opera, but are camouflages or a sort of dissembling to conceal one's feelings. Here, the boy, or a youngish-looking man, has his face plastered over the whole canvas. Is he laughing? It looks more like a grimace, a chagrin. And why? Laughter is always the best medicine, but in Siew Ying's repertoire, it takes a more sinister bent albeit not ostensibly clear, so we laugh along with it. It's just like Yue Minjun's circus of laughing men, but to Siew Ying, she is more concerned with getting the facial expressions, the lighting effects right and the textures. It's not a portrait per se, or about a person, it's more about a human face. Times like this, you can almost hear the background strains of Beyonce's If I Were A Boy (2008). Some would have been contented with a diploma in Graphic Design (Petaling Jaya College of Art and Design). Not Chong Siew Ying, who bravely ventured to France to further her studies at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Versailles, 1991-1994) and L'Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working part-time as an au pair. When there, she had the honour of solos at the Maison Tch'A, Atelier d'Maravel and Gallery Café Panique, and prints biennials in France, Spain, Holland and Taiwan. Chong Siew Ying (b. Kuala Lumpur, 1969) Horizon 1, 2009

        Est: RM20,000 - RM28,000

Horses are free in the wild, prancing around with gaiety and the hooves kicking up little storms of dust. The horizon is just an imaginary line, separating Heaven and Earth as it were, shifting ambiguously from a sea or land perspective. For Chong Siew Ying, painting horses is more than just the physical attributes of strength, speed and agility, but the verve to use these virtues to chart one's growth and destiny. And it's a greater blessing to have a pair to share moments good or bad, to face challenges together with chivalry - till life do them part. The horses are rendered with her lyrical brushstrokes robustly yet tenderly, boosted by her keen observation. This work is part of a dossier of 11 in the Frame of Mind solo exhibition at Ernst & Young Singapore as part of its Asian Art Outreach programme in 2009. Other animals featured include a dog, cats and lions. Chong Siew Ying boldly left for France to further her studies in Art at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and L'Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working as an au pair part-time, and even had solos at the Maison ch'A, Atelier d' Maravel and Gallery CafePanique. Lyrical, symbolic and erotic. The lone flower with the stamen sticking out upright amidst large leaves amidst a barren but picturesque land and swirling cloud formation is stunningly idyllic. The effects are enhanced in its stark monochromatic hues. Chong Siew Ying shows here why she is the high priestess of the panorama with the poetic empathy and melancholic vistas, and her natural kinship with land. The work, Once Upon A Time IV, comes from a body of works in an eponymous exhibition at the Whiteways in Penang, as part of the Georgetown Festival in 2013. An artist who dared to dream, making a beeline for Paris in 1990 after graduating (diploma, Graphic Design) from the Petaling College of Art and Design. Chong Siew Ying’s dreamy monochrome of a misty morning is captured like an intricate trellis imprint on frosted glass but with an aura of passing time and memory. The silhouettes of higher branches of trees seemingly swaying in the wind seem couched between Chinese branch painting melancholy and Western pictorialism of depth and space. Then if mine had been the Painter’s hand To express what then I saw; and add the gleam, The light that never was, on sea or land, The Consecration, and the Poet’s dream. William Wordsworth (Elegiac Stanzas,1807) Chong Siew Ying followed in the footsteps of Lai Foong Moi four decades earlier in seeking further art education in France, hers at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Versailles and the L’Atelier 63 compared to Lai’s art citadel in Paris. She realised that her diploma in Graphic Design at the Petaling Jaya College of Art and Design was not enough, and being impecunious as a farmer’s daughter, she supported herself by working part-time as an au pair. Like Lai, she earned solos at the Maison Tch’A, Atelier d’Maravel and Gallery Café Panique. An artist’s residency at Rimbun Dahan further burnished her credentials, and it was followed by the Fremont Fellowship at Vermont Studio Centre, United States. Acclaimed artist Chong Siew Ying’s technique, a creative use of Western and Eastern tonalities gives this monochromatic work a poetic aura.

Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone... These opening refrain from Ella Wheeler Wilcox’s poem, Solitude, perhaps best elucidates Chong Siew Ying’s Laughter Series, which shows androgynous faces dominating the whole canvas in inexplicable convulsions of laughter. Is the outburst to conceal some awkward personal misgivings, a demented trait, a fake emotion, a ridicule, or a distraction? The gender of the laughing person is ambiguous, even with the shaved head which is to amplify the facial expressions. Could it be Siew Ying’s own avatar although she has painted herself intruding in canvases with tresses et al in such pieces as Wonderland, and in named persona like Iris. Other viewers may see it differently. The facial expression (the real, natural laugh) is well captured, which reflects the innocence, the purity... It’s fortuitous that Chong Siew Ying furthered her art studies in France after a diploma in Graphic Design at the Petaling Jaya College of Art and Design. Supporting herself by working part-time as an au pair, she studied at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and L’Atelier 63 (1994-1996), and had solos at the Maison Tch’A, Atelier d’Maravel and Gallery Café Panique. On her return, she was awarded an artist’s residency at Rimbun Dahan, and later the Freemont Fellowship at Vermont Studio Centre, United States. She won the Special Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 2002, and was a finalist in the Hong Kong Sovereign Art Prize in 2009. She was also featured in Art Stage Singapore in 2015, and had her solo Crying With Trees at The Edge Galerie in 2014.

In the first part of this diptych, two catfishes can be seen swimming towards viewer at the bottom, probably gossiping about potential choice food, from the stems of the lotus rooted in mud perhaps. The lotus is shown as its shower-head pod and in bloom. The lotus signifies long life, health and good luck, and purity of heart and mind, adapting and surmounting its muddy environs. The work is lyrical imbuing the ethereal qualities of Chinese brush painting with a gentility that is fresh and delicate. There is languor and a feeling of sweet forgetfulness. In the catalogue of Many Splendoured Things where this work was shown at Valentine Willie Fine Art (March 23 - April 8, 2006), J. Anurendra wrote:“...Siew Ying distils from these elements a language without temporal limit, a universalising mode. In these new drawings, form bespeaks content and content, form, in a unity rarely achieved in contemporary art.” Chong Siew Ying pursued her destiny in art by leaving for France in 1990 to study art at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and then L’Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working part-time as an au pair. Est: RM22,000 - RM38,000

Acclaimed artist Chong Siew Ying’s technique, a creative use of Western and Eastern tonalities gives this monochromatic work a poetic aura. The central focus of the work is a graceful lady immersed in thought as light illuminates the contours of her neck and hair. Painted in an expressive style the scene suggests spaciousness by the inclusion of a vast landscape with dense forests. It plays on light and silhouettes, portraying Nature in all its resplendent beauty and complexities. There is no doubt that Chong Siew Ying’s decision to further her art studies in Paris in 1990 proved a turning point. In Paris, she had solos at the Maison TchÁ, Atelier d’Maravel, and Gallery Café Panique. This dreamy monochromatic work is derived from Chong Siew Ying’s The Home And The World Series (2009-2015), lodged in Western Art nomenclature but with Chinese art tonalities. With an island of tree cluster with reflection off-centre, it plays on light and silhouettes, portraying Nature in all its resplendent beauty and complexities with a sudden burst of its mercurial nature. Nature in all its beauty and complexity, and hints of its sudden mercurial nature. The tree ‘island’ plays on the mind like a dirigible but with mystique. Subverting the Chinese art scroll format, paintings of this genre could stretch for some 280cm. There is no doubt that Chong Siew Ying’s decision to further her art studies in Paris in 1990 proved a turning point. There was limited scope one could expect with a Diploma in Graphic Design (Petaling College of Art and Design). Central to the themes of Chong Siew Ying's works are the stories of humanity, and the complexities of the world of man. Painted in dynamic flesh tones, the artist has portrayed the figures with graceful contours of the head, arms, chest and back. The human figures seem liberated from the material world, and alludes to a person's inner mind and space for imagination. Wispy floating clouds, rendered with the effects of light in the sky, predominantly in blue and white, position these meditative figures in a timeless and dreamlike space. This piece depicts a machine-powered horse, and a vulture tearing off its flesh, scavenging a meal. Judging from the backdrop — a ferris wheel and a circus tent (reminiscent old memories) — and the mechanical horse's get-up, it would seem that the horse was built for entertainment purposes, dressed up as clown (like a fool), to please the crowd. The diary sketches (inside the wooden frame at the bottom) of skeleton and laughing face further enhanced the effect. Suhaidi Razi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at UiTM Shah Alam. Chong Siew Ying is one of the most iconic figures in Malaysian contemporary art. In terms of composition this work explores various techniques of using mediums and forms to express the poetic qualities of landscape, a style which the artist is renowned for. Delicate and touched by a gentle breeze, the reflections of trees and sky are seen in the water. Her celebrated paintings of landscapes are informed by Eastern and Western sensibilities and exude an atmospheric feeling, allowing the viewer to gaze in contemplation. By using refined strokes in monochrome colours Siew Ying captures a dreamy, captivating scene of sky and water united as one. In this work, the figures are arranged in a pyramidal composition, which recalls the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. The figures are rendered with weight and solidity, perhaps also reminding one of nature personified as the source and guiding force of creation. Mother Nature needs to be preserved well. The jungle / forest / habitat of the natives shouldn’t be threatened, affected by man made causes, in the name of development.Chong Siew Ying first studied for her Diploma in Graphic Design at the Petaling College of Art and Design but impetuously decided to continue her studies in Paris in 1990, at the L’ Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and then L’Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working part time as an au pair. Chong Siew Ying, the farmer’s daughter who dared to dream, to take up Art in the great Paris citadel with her notion of the hua qia (The Artist), has eked a reputation as one of the finest contemporary artists in Southeast Asia. Here, the roar of the she-lion represents a cry of celebration of her independent spirit and artistic expressions as well as a warning that she would guard her private space and territory. Only the lion head is most visible, practically dominating the whole canvas, and with the aggressively opened mouth baring its fangs. The lion is a morass of raffish staccato strokes, with not even the eyes detailed. The whole aggro charge is tempered by the stunningly azure sky and the dainty flower or two shown. These two animal works were done during the time of her Infinity exhibition at the Valentine Willie Fine Art, now defunct, in 2011. Much attention is drawn to her sublimal landscapes and her irrationally Yue Min Jun-like laughing faces that one other aspect of her animal menagerie is overshadowed.

From big cat to domestic cat, but don’t let that contented proud-looking feline fool you of its tame, timid nature. The cat, fat and furry at that, is set large against the backdrop of a mock Chinese-ink painting landscape, reversing the Chinese aesthetic of the living thing as a mere insignificant speck in the greater cosmos of things. For the ornamentation and sense of movement, three butterflies are shown hovering around and yes, there is that inconspicuous stalk of flowers.Chong Siew Ying first studied for her Diploma in Graphic Design at the Petaling College of Art and Design but impetuously decided to continue her studies in Paris in 1990, at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and then L’Atelier 63 (1994-1996), supporting herself by working part-time as an au pair. CHONG SIEW YING (b. 1969) Eclipse II, 1997, Mixed media on paper laid on canvas

        Est: RM10,000 - RM15,000

This early piece illustrates repetitive mosaics of two silhouette figures rendered in the manner of Pop art and silkscreen technique resembling Andy Warhol’s much-famed Car Crash silkscreen works. The monochromatic colour palette conveys timelessness, elegance and mystery. This work was perhaps completed during her transition phase upon graduating from the etching school L’Atelier 63 prior to returning home. Chong Siew Ying’s bold figures have opened new vistas into the art, psychology and physiology of painting the body, what with her latest body of work where Chinese philosophy and ink and brush starkness are infused in a solo exhibition titled Crying with Trees (2014). Her figures were transformed after studying at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Versailles (1991-1994) and then the L’Atelier 63 (1994 - 1996). Her early tutelage was at the Petaling Jaya College of Art and Design (Graphic Design, Diploma, 1990). Upon her return from Paris, she was selected for Rimbun Dahan artists’ residency from 1999 to 2000, which was followed by another at the Vermont Studio Centre in the United States of America in 2001. In 2002, she clinched a Special Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition and she was a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2005. Her solo exhibitions included Idylle: New Paintings by Chong Siew Ying (2008), Many Splendoured Things (2006), Going Away, Coming Home (2002) and Chong Siew Ying: Selected Works 1996-1997 in Kuala Lumpur, 1998. In Paris, she has held solo exhibitions at the Maison Tch’A, Atelier D.Maravel and Gallery Café Panique. Her works are collected by the National Visual Arts Gallery in Kuala Lumpur as well as respected private collections in Malaysia, Singapore, France and the USA. She now lives and works as a full time artist in Malaysia. Her works was recently exhibited in two group exhibitions at Art Stage Singapore 2015 titled Being Human: Figuratism of 16 Malaysian Artists and Stepping Out.

An exploration of the abstract style, this piece illustrates the silhouette of five anonymous figures, formed with loose brushstrokes and in a liberal manner. Her murky colour palette suggests that perhaps this is an experimental work, a variation of her other known paintings depicting enchanting female portraits. Chong Siew Ying’s bold figures have opened new vistas into the art, psychology and physiology of painting the body, what with her latest body of work where Chinese philosophy and ink and brush starkness are infused in a solo exhibition titled Crying with Trees (2014). CHONG SIEW YING (b. 1969) Hawa, 2011, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM23,000 - RM30,000

Hawa is an expressive figurative portrayal of a woman, an embodiment of youth and beauty placed elegantly amidst the setting of a lush oriental garden. The young lady reflects a desirable quality, which evokes associations with the story of Eve, situated in a garden of paradise where beauties and flowers exist side by side. Her glowing matt flesh is complemented by pale shades of blue in the background. The floral specimens add interest to the composition and are imbued with symbols of perseverance despite their delicate and fleeting quality. The magnolia represents nobility and purity, the white lily signifies virtue and devotion, while the peony is known as the symbol of riches and honour. By combining the notions of ideal beauty from eastern and western perspectives, this painting is rendered with oil painting techniques and imparts Chinese ink painting aesthetics. For the artist, the portrayal of the figure in nude seeks to express a spiritual side of the human body.   Chong Siew Ying’s bold figures have opened new vistas into the art, psychology and physiology of painting the body, what with her latest body of work where Chinese philosophy and ink and brush starkness are infused in a solo exhibition titled Crying with Trees (2014). Est: RM35,000 - RM50,000

The elegant and lyrical painter Chong Siew Ying illustrates a pair of male and female figures, each enthralled in their emotions of awe and excitement in this alluring piece titled Idylle II. Featured in the artist's first major exhibition in Malaysia, this piece demonstrates her ability to infuse Western and Eastern techniques on canvas. Distinctly Chinese in each portrait's features, Siew Ying is interested in exploring the notion of beauty and harmony in classical Chinese painting and portray it in a contemporary context. The deliberate use of flowers in Siew Ying's paintings is symbolic of nature introduced as an element of freedom and fragility in its ambience. At ease with painting in large dimensions, Siew Ying's monochromatic subject dominates the canvas set amidst pastoral and romantic setting embellished with beautiful blooms. Chong Siew Ying's bold figures have opened new vistas into the art, psychology and physiology of painting the body, what with her latest body of work where Chinese philosophy and ink and brush starkness are infused in a solo exhibition titled Crying with Trees (2014).
