      SANTIAGO DE LES (1898 - 1961, La Alcudia, Valencia) "Portrait of a gentleman. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm, 106 x 93 cm (frame). Santiago de Les Chornet was a Spanish painter born in La Alcudia (Valencia) in 1898. He began his artistic training at the School of Artisans in Valencia, and continued it at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, where he specialised in portraiture, in accordance with the norms of modern classicism. In the 1930s he moved to Madrid, where he lived until shortly before his death. In 1958, as a participant in the V International Orthocide Congress, he was received in a civil audience by Francisco Franco, then head of state.4 He died in 1961 in Valencia, after a severe illness. Well-appreciated practically from the beginning, he took part in a number of national art exhibitions, in several of which he was awarded prizes and honours. His most highly valued works were always classical portraits, although he also painted still lifes and still lifes. He also exhibited his works in various Spanish capitals, such as Madrid, Valencia and San Sebastián, among others. He applied composition conscientiously to his portraits, making this his main characteristic.
