      A FINE SOTEN SCHOOL SOROIMONO (SET OF SWORD FITTINGS) DEPICTING SAMURAI WARRIORS The tsuba signed Soten, the fuchi signed Goto Kaijo with kakihan Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) The set consists of a tsuba, a fuchi and kashira, a kozuka, and a pair of menuki, depicting samurai. The iron tsuba of naga-marugata shape, worked in sukashi and takabori with gold, silver and suaka (refined copper) takazogan, depicting Samurai engaged in combat, signed Soheishi Nyudo, Soten sei (Made by Soten with the Soheishi Nyudo title). The kozuka worked on a nanako ground with gold, suaka, and shibuichi takazogan, depicting two figures on horseback, signed on the back Goto Kaijo with the artist’s kakihan (cursive monogram). The shibuichi fuchi and kashira worked on a nanako ground with gold, silver, and shakudo takazogan depicting samurai engaging in battle. The two menuki each cast as a seated archer. Tsuba SIZE 7.4 x 6.9 cm, Kashira LENGTH 3.8 cm, kozuka LENGTH 9.4 cm, menuki LENGTH 3.2 cm WEIGHT total 181.2 g Condition: All in good condition with typical surface wear, slight rusting to the tsuba, and small nicks to the kozuka.

      A RARE SET OF SOTEN SCHOOL SWORD FITTINGS The tsuba signed Soheishi Nyudo Soten sei Japan, Soten school, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The set depicting samurai warriors depicted in different attitudes worked in iro-e takazogan, the kozuka and fuchi-kashira with a shakudo nanako ground, the tsuba made of iron. The set consisting of a pair of menuki, a fuchi and kashira, a kozuka, and a tsuba. The tsuba is signed Soheishi Nyudo SOTEN sei. Tsuba SIZE 7.5 x 7. cm, Kozuka HEIGHT 9.6 cm, Kashira LENGTH 3.7 cm, Menuki LENGTH 2.5 cm Condition: All in very good condition with minor typical surface wear and minor areas of discoloration.

      A SOTEN SCHOOL IRON TSUBA DEPICTING THE BATTLE OF DAN-NO-URA, GENPEI WARS Unsigned Japan, Soten school, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The marugata iron tsuba with a kozuka hitsu-ana, the kogai hitsu-ana plugged, the nakago-ana with some sekigane, finely worked in hikone-bori to depict a fierce combat at sea between the Minamoto and Taira clans, the samurai maneuvering their boats close together for hand-to-hand combat amid the swelling waves. HEIGHT 7.7 cm, LENGTH 7.2 cm WEIGHT 113 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear commensurate with age, few traces of use and light rubbing. Accompanied by a Hozon (worthy of preservation) certificate from the NBTHK attesting to the tsuba’s quality and authenticity. The NBTHK Kanteisho (certificate of appraisal and authenticity) dated to 17 September 2021 reads: HOZON – Worthy of Preservation (yellow paper) (A sword fitting Worthy of Conservation, the kanteisho issued by the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword) NBTHK certificate number: 4019280. Hozon registration number: 03202108. Museum comparison: Compare a closely related tsuba of the Gempei wars, by the Soten school, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession number EAX.10790.
