    Nov. 25, 2019

CHUIKOV, IVAN (B. 1935) No. 7, from "Postcards" Series

    Est: £25,000 - £30,000

CHUIKOV, IVAN (B. 1935) No. 7, from "Postcards" Series signed, titled and dated 1992 on the reverse. Acrylic and collage with a postcard on canvas, 180 by 130 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Italy. Important private collection, Switzerland. This auction presents a collection of works (lots 32–49, 52–54) by artists belonging to the Moscow conceptual circle. It is a most interesting and very characteristic selection of artworks from the turn of the 1980s–1990s by such significant artists of the older generation as Igor Makarevich, Ivan Chuikov, Andrei Monastyrsky, Anatoly Slepyshev, Dmitry Prigov, and of those belonging to the “new wave”, like Konstantin Zvezdochetov, Pavel Pepperstein, Alexander Yakut and others. Like most of the striking unofficial artworks of the time, they were bought into a private Western collection. Thus, they not only offer us a fully preserved, contemporaneous cross-section of the “artistic process” in the late 1980s and early 1990s; they are also undoubtedly works of their time — something that is becoming especially important today, in the age of total autoreproduction. It is not hard to understand the interest shown by the collector in these artists and their works, and in particular in a new generation, which was freely and ironically developing and reinterpreting the ideas behind Moscow Conceptualism. For artists who had inherited Conceptualist ideas, the turn of the 1980s–1990s was a time for moulding their own style, a style that largely shaped the “new wave” in Russian art. An interest in mass-media and grassroots culture (an edifying school poster, a postage stamp, a postcard, a text used in a slogan) that is so evident in the works presented had been typical of the Conceptualists back in the 1970s. However, the “new wave” creators’ use of the primitivism seen in everyday printing output was coloured by the new tones of a subtle intellectual game and the contextual interpretation of old meanings. Here the range of subjects presented in the collection is very revealing. It includes homage paid to avant-garde figures of the early twentieth century (Kazimir Malevich and Sergei Eisenstein), images meant for mass consumption (Soviet symbols, comics and advertising) and classical European art motifs (landscape, portrait and pastoral)

  • CHUIKOV, IVAN (B. 1935) Point of View II, from “Point of View” Series
    Nov. 25, 2019

CHUIKOV, IVAN (B. 1935) Point of View II, from “Point of View” Series

    Est: £40,000 - £60,000

CHUIKOV, IVAN (B. 1935) Point of View II, from “Point of View” Series signed and dated 1990, also further signed, inscribed “horizontal/Should be hangt [sic] this way.”, bears two drawings and dated on the reverse. Enamel on screenprint, laid on cardboard, 99.5 by 150 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by Antonio Piccoli in 2000. Collection of the above, Italy. Important private collection, UK. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the artist. Exhibited: Ivan Chuikov. Point of View, Regina Gallery, Moscow, 2010. Literature: Exhibition catalogue, Ivan Chuikov, Moscow, Regina Gallery, 2010, p. 407, No. 224, listed. The present lot is an important work from Chuikov’s “Point of View” series. It is one of the first in this celebrated cycle, in which the artist explores the tension between art as a path to the truth and art as merely a point of view. This concept encourages the onlooker to debate the very nature of reality itself, questioning the veracity of a particular viewpoint. Each work within the series “Point of View” includes a similar black and white screenprint coastal view as a background and a painted composition, distinctive in form, in the centre. As the artist himself explains on the verso of the work presented for auction, the artwork might be hung at an angle, so that the line within the swathe of paint in the centre of the composition is horizontal. The artist further plays with the onlooker’s perception, allowing for multiple possible ways of viewing the composition. Commenting on this cycle Evgeny Barabanov wrote the following: “A point of view suggests variants, variants suggest freedom, freedom suggests choice, including a choice of points of view” (Exhibition catalogue, Ivan Chuikov, Moscow, Regina Gallery, 2010, p. 221).

IVAN CHUIKOV | Window # XXXXVI

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

signed and titled in Cyrillic and dated ' 2000' on the reverse acrylic on hardboard and wood with metal hardware Chuikov's 'window frame' series with images drawn on them is one of his most famous, an exploration of the collision of reality and fiction – a constant source of friction in the Soviet Union. 'It was in the late 1970s, when I was already making windows. I had about thirty of them, and I had other works too, but the main thing was those windows, people knew me by those windows'. Of the seven works on this theme sold at auction, six have dated to his post-2000 period. Four of Chuikov's paintings were included in Sotheby’s Moscow sale in 1988. A solo show titled ‘Labyrinths’ opened at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2010 to this enigmatic artist termed by one critic ‘The Prince of Emptiness’.

It existed only because of the oppression and persecution by the authorities. We lived underground. There is nothing like this in the West. We are now like everybody else. We live normal lives now under normal conditions. Then, it was very special, like living in a hot house…. Since we couldn’t sell anything, we felt free' (Ivan Chuikov, quoted in ‘Soviet Dissident Artists’, Rutgers University Press, 1995).

And even if someone had said to me that you are a dissident, I would have denied it. Why should one expose oneself to unpleasantness? What does occur, however, is a gradual change. I studied with classmates who became official artists. Now, of course, there are no more official artists. We remained friends for a long time, but then you first refuse invitations. Then you do not want to go to an official meeting of artists. You don’t want to show at official exhibitions. Imperceptibly, you turn away. You estrange yourself.' (Ivan Chuikov, quoted in ‘Soviet Dissident Artists’, Rutgers University Press, 1995)

    CHUIKOV, IVAN

    Est: $30,000 - $40,000

IVAN CHUIKOV (RUSSIAN B1935), "T.V. 4," 1994, enamel on masonite, 180 x 128.9 cm (70 7/8 x 50 3/4 in.), signed, titled and dated 'T.V.'94 Ivan Chuikov' on the reverse. PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist EXHIBITED: Moscow, State Tretyakov Gallery, 'Ivan Chuikov: Works from 1966-1997,' 1998; Leverkusen, Kulturabeilug Bayer AG, 'Ivan Chuikov,' 1999; Muelheim, Kunst Museum Alte Poste, 'Ivan Chuikov,' 2003; New York, Alexandre Gertsman Contemporary Art, 'Russian Art: 1980 - 2005,' 2006; New York, Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, 2007 Annual Tretyakov Ball, November 8, 2007. In his "TV" series, Chuikov creates a conflict between the pictorial fiction - and the brutality of the reality, i.e. plastic TV box, that "frames" the painting, the "pictorial." He uses eclectic method of artistic expression to deliver his ideas. His work, at first glance, look like amorphous mixture of the method, semantics, subject and image. He offers the pictorial not as characteristic illusion, but as unrefined, anti-illusory, non-transparent film, using the combination of different styles, or rather of different techniques: graphic, pictorial, drafting, and of a poster.
