Huang Chun-pi was trained under Li Yao of the Lingnan School to practise western paintings, followed by traditional Chinese ink paintings. Landscape works are well sought after, especially those of waterfalls and misty landscapes. Both Chinese and Western painting techniques are superbly incorporated in this work. Swift strokes were applied with confidence. Three layers of structures could be found in this work with a sketch of mountains in the middle ground. Lofty cliffs and rugged hills create a balance of fragility and sturdiness. Short cun and dots were added to the cliff highlighted with soft layers of ink and ochres, depicting the texture of rocks. A myriad of skills was used to depict the forest by saturated dots of ink and red, highlighting an autumnal scene. Two cliffs open up to a waterfall depicted with shaking strokes and v-shaped lines. As water falls, it merges with the misty clouds gleaming with grandeur. Dark outlines and light ochre were used for the distant hills, while light gray was used to depict the shadow of distant clouds. Such light depiction forms a refreshing scenery. A house hides among the clouds in a utopian mountainous surrounding. Inside the house sit two scholars appreciating the scenery, forming a secluded and relaxing scene. By the depiction of misty waterfall landscape, the artist hinted at his wish for tranquility.

溪畔幽居 Residing by the River 款識: 秉瑜女士雅屬。 Huang Chun-pi was an acclaimed modern landscape painter. Under the influence of his father and his teacher Li Yao-ping, he studied ink and western art, thus both techniques could be observed in his paintings. His early admiration of works by Jian Jiang and Xia Gui, and observations from his travels, allow him to paint waterfalls and misty forest scenes. He learnt how to paint clouds through his observations in Huashan. During his travels, the changes of clouds and mists in the mountains are captured through observation and vividly depicted on the paintings. This work was painted in 1965 with linear perspective and a structure adopted from Western art, creating a vibrant and realistic painting. Axe-cun strokes of Wang Meng and velvety dots were used to depict the surface of the rocks in the foreground. Buds bloom in the trees in the middle, enhancing the lusciousness of Spring. Light green was applied to enhance the mistiness. Fine brushstrokes sketched the movement of grass under the breeze of spring. A cottage behind the forest shows settlements in the countryside. Distance hills were depicted with cun dots, with reference to Fan Kuan. Yet a few dots construct a soaring mountain and rugged cliff. The use of techniques shows the artist's skills and his respect towards old masters. Mists linger in the distant mountains, creating an elusive mysterious scene. Saturated ink was used with swift and skillful brushwork, to enhance the humidity of the surroundings. Such techniques resemble that of Shi Tao. With dried brush for distant objects and saturated brush for nearer objects, further enhanced by linear perspective, the painting captures a moment in time of an animated tranquility.

Huang Chun-Pi, also known as Chun-Weng, was one of the greatest Chinese modern ink artists and a devoted professor in art. He had close relationships with Huang Bin-Hong, Yu You-Ren and Xu Bei-Hong. After arriving in Taiwan, he was ranked as the greatest three artists with Pu Hsin-Yu and Zhang Da-Qian. Huang Chun-Pi graduated from Guangdong School and followed Li Yao-Ping's teaching in Chinese paintings. He practised styles of Xinan School in his early career and copied ancient paintings later, hence his knowledge in Song and Yuan paintings of all genres was profound. This made him an all-rounded artist. His painting after Huayan in 1924 astounded Zhang Da-Qian, who praised his brushwork as authentic to the original work. Huang Chun-Pi's Flower-and-Bird paintings are fresh and pleasant to the modern eye. Works prior to Taiwan period were mostly structured in traditional style with fine strokes of sketches, rough expressions and gongbi strokes on Flower-and-Bird and figure paintings. This painting was created in 1942 when Huang stayed in Chongqing. During his eight years in Sichuan, he visited famous sites and made sketchings during his trip. This painting was made in autumn when plum blossoms started blooming. Flowers bloom in all forms, sketched with fine gongbi and cun strokes. Branches were naturally depicted. White colours were used on buds and flowers, highlighting their innocent forms. Bamboo on the lower right was added as stark contrast with the plum blossom. The whole scene was enriched in realistic approach, with blue birds posing naturally, as one looks straight at the audience, others are tidying their feathers. Concentrated ink was used on their heads and white colour highlights the fluffy feather at the cheeks, creating a vivid depiction. Strokes were extremely fine and colours were meticulously applied to highlight the features on the backs and the tails. Light yellow was used on the chest. Such exquisite depictions enhance the elegance of the painting. Harmonious colours were chosen to form a picturesque autumn scene with hints of respect to the Song's cold and distant style and Yuan's approaching style, making this a unique piece.

聽泉圖 Residing by the Creek 釋文:山間築屋愛流泉。 Huang Chun-Pi was considered as one of the three greatest postwar artists relocated to Taiwan, along with Zhang Da-Qian and Pu Hsin-Yu. The three artists were all-round scholars excelled at Landscapes, Flower-and-Birds, Figures paintings. They reinvented traditions and led the development of ink paintings for decades. Huang Chun-Pi is undoubtedly one of the most influential people in art education with a solid recognition in Landscape paintings. He promoted drawings through observation and visited famous mountains of China during the war. Sketches of clouds had been collected since then. After relocating to Taiwan, he held exhibitions, lectures and trips to visit majestic landscapes all over the world, including waterfalls in the US and in Africa. Since then, waterfalls painted became majestic similar to galloping horses, making him one of the greatest masters in clouds and waterfall paintings. An inscription of the work reads, "Summer of 1971 by Huang Chun-Pi". This shows the work was done at Huang's 74 years of age. The inscription also describes a scene of a cottage by the running creek. Using a diagonal structure, a one-point perspective was used to position surrounding objects. A pathway meanders from the left leading to the cottage, where a scholar seated looking at a waterfall. In front of him is a cliff with a sideway that allows water to flow through. The force of water created mists in the valley, forming a poetic scene. A wet brush saturated with ink, axe and vertical cun were used to enhance the humid environment in the scene. Dense ink was used for the foreground, lighter at the center, creating visible layers. Huang Chun-Pi used his unique trembling strokes to create a ferocious waterfall. Blank spaces were used on the floating water to juxtapose with dense dark rocks on the river bed. Splashes and ripples were depicted with various density of ink and rugged lines. This realistic approach depicts a dynamic landscape that echoes in the minds of viewers.

He once mentioned, "the mist and cloud I depicted are not copied from previous masters. The mist I created have movement, whereas those depicted by previous masters are only sketched by lines. Same with the clouds I have drawn." As Guo Xi once mentioned in his painting, "Water is the veins of a mountain, plants are its hair, mist gives a mountain its colour. From this logic, water is essential to a mountain’s survival, plants make the mountain look beautiful, whereas mist enhances its beauty." Clouds and mists are the crucial elements in Chinese landscape ink paintings. Early depiction of these elements rely heavily on outlines and sketches. From the Late Ming to Early Qing dynasty, four monks started using the depiction of colour, thus enabled the depiction of movement in clouds. Having been trained through copying old masters, Huang was able to gather the best of ancient ink masters and applied to the paintings according to personal experience, thus achieved Huang’s unique representation from his observation. This painted stated, Huang was 68 years old when he painted this work. From a bird’s eye view, Huang was able to represent spatial depth through height, depth and horizontal distance. From this work, mountainous relief amongst the heavy mist was depicted. A river meanders at the bottom right of the panel towards the center, carving deep into the valley. Mists defined the painting into two parts across the mountain. This clever treatment of mists not only provides a clear structure, it also enhances spatial depiction in the painting. To further heightens the humidity of the area, rocks and plants were depicted using different kinds of brushstrokes including fupizhou and zhizhou. Saturated ink was used in the foreground, lighter ink in the middle ground and the lightest ink was used for distant mountains, enhancing the layering of mountains. Clouds and mists were arranged at the bottom of the valley, depicted as uncoloured area. Using light ink to highlight the layering of clouds, creating movement of heavy mists. With careful structuring and skilled brushstrokes, Huang created this masterpiece of misty mountains.
