  • Thomas Churchyard (British, 1798-1865) after John Crome
    Dec. 04, 2024

Thomas Churchyard (British, 1798-1865) after John Crome

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Thomas Churchyard (British, 1798-1865) after John Crome The Windmill on Mousehold Heath, near Norwich oil on canvas, unframed 109 x 92cm Provenance: H. E. Day, Eastbourne by 1966 and acquired shortly thereafter by the father of the present owner Literature: W. F. Dickes, The Norwich School of Painters, 1905, p.107; Thomas, Thomas Churchyard of Woodbridge, 1966, p.13 & p.22, note 9; D. & T. Clifford, John Crome, 1968, p.214, no. P.63d; H. Day, East Anglian Painters, Vol. I, 1967, p.112 & illustrated p.119; N. L. Goldberg, John Crome the Elder, 1978, p.201; W. Morfey, Painting the Day, Thomas Churchyard of Woodbridge, 1986, p.83-4 This copy after one of John Crome’s most famous works – now in Tate Britain – was made by Thomas Churchyard whilst the original was in his own collection between 1843 and 1866. It is considered as probably Churchyard’s largest recorded work (see Literature, Day 1967, p.112). Two watercolour copies of this Crome, by Churchyard, are also known (see Literature, Thomas 1966, p.13 & p.22 note 9). In the view of Thomas (ibid 1966, p.13) the present copy “gives a truer conception of the original than the painting itself, which has browned & yellowed with age.” This work by Churchyard is first cited by Dickes in 1905 (see Literature) but its whereabout remained unknown until 1966 (see Provenance).

Attributed to Thomas Churchyard (British, 1798-1865)

    Est: £400 - £600

Attributed to Thomas Churchyard (British, 1798-1865) A sunset landscape, en plein air sketch oil on canvas laid on panel 17 x 23cm This dynamic and immediate study was almost certainly executed en plein air by an artist experimenting with the effects of light. The even landscape and possible hint of a distant windmill suggests an East Anglian hand very close to that of Thomas Churchyard, known for his innovative and spontaneous observations of nature.

He thus ensured his estate would be divided equally after his death. He is recorded to have said at the time: "My dears, there will not be any money for you when I die, but I will leave you my paintings, which one day will be worth more than any money I could ever have hoped to have made".
