ANDRÉS CILLERO (Valencia, 1934 - Madrid, 1993). Untitled. Pair of silkscreen prints, examples P.A and H.C. Signed and justified in pencil. Sizes: 65,5 x 50 cm; 75,5 x 55,5 cm. Painter, sculptor and professor of drawing, Andrés Cillero is today considered one of the main introducers of pop art in Spain, but his art was a clear sign of a constant and personal evolution. Trained in Valencia, Madrid, Paris and Rome, in his early years he painted with a markedly Cubist tendency, based on compositions of different planes and colour, with evident "Picassian" influences. After this stage, he went on to explore the so-called "Grotesch.Art", in which neo-realism with touches of pop art connected with surrealism to give rise to an erotic iconography. During the 1960s, his innovation lay in the so-called "Washable Gothic", works that he would unveil at the Sao Paolo Biennial. After this pictorial experience, his work moved again towards flat painting, which he called "Fold-In". He was artistic director of the magazine "Flashmen" and was selected on several occasions to represent Spain at the Sao Paolo Biennial, the Alexandria Biennial, the Krakow Biennial and the Haus der Kunst in Munich. Throughout his life he won several awards, including the National Painting Prize in Madrid in 1976, and the Second Medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1971. He exhibited all over the world and played an important role in the cultural development of the Valencian art scene. He was also awarded the National Painting Prize in 1976. He is currently represented in the Museum of Villafamés, the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, the IVAM, as well as in other public and private collections.
