Clarke 1888 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST As a collector, Graham Williford was always on the lookout for talented women artists, and frequently purchased their work. Where he discovered this panoramic scene of the Smoky Mountains is unknown, though it records one of the many trips the Boston-based landscapist Sara Anne Freeman Clarke made through the region of Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas. She exhibited her works at the Boston Art Club, Apollo Association, American Art Union, and Boston Athenaeum.
