ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media (collage, painting) on paper. Signed.

    Est: €7,000 - €7,500

ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media (collage, painting) on paper. Signed. Measurements: 100 x 70 cm; 113 x 83 cm (frame). The formal and material experimentation was the creative engine of Antoni Clavé, which in the composition that we show reaches special relevance for the combination of grattage, frottage, collage and dripping techniques. The black dripping on the blue background contributes to define an abstract landscape that suggests a wooded setting. Clavé deploys here a palimpsest of papers and textures with cut-out stencils, on which he handles light and shadow, also using scraping and rubbing on textured elements to make ambiguous silhouettes emerge between the layers. Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. Trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jordi in Barcelona, Clavé was initially dedicated to advertising graphics, illustration and decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, in the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibits the drawings he made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognized in Spain, after his exhibition at the Gaspar Gallery in Barcelona in 1956. At the same time, he made illustrations for the work "Gargantua and Pantagruel", which led him to become familiar with medieval iconography. In this same decade of the fifties is when he began his intense work in the world of ballet and theater, achieving great fame in the world of international scenography. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar award. In 1954, he abandoned set design to devote himself to painting. He received awards at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and at the International Biennial in Tokyo in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish State recognized his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Clavé's work can be found, among many others, in the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.

ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Roi. 1959. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower margin. Measurements: 64 x 49 cm; 91 x 74 cm (frame). Antoni Clavé's painting "Roi" is a work that reveals the artist's experimentation with material textures and his characteristic focus on medieval and symbolic themes linked to figures of kings and knights. In "Roi" we perceive an abstract and textured representation of power and authority, reflecting Clavé's interest in royal figures reinterpreted in a material and expressive way. At this stage of his production, Clavé was influenced by the Spanish tradition, but also by European avant-garde currents. The painting presents a figure of a king transformed into a mysterious image, with traces of archetypal elements, such as the fleurs-de-lis. This treatment allows him to explore not only the monarchical figure as a symbol but also to investigate the aesthetic qualities themselves, also dialoguing with the tradition of official monarchical portraits. The color palette is earthy and somber, suggesting ideas linked to solemnity, decadence and the concealment of identity. The work evokes a sense of majesty, but at the same time of attrition or deconstruction, as if the king were emerging from an archaic time or fading into it. Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. Formed in the School of Fine Arts of San Jordi of Barcelona, Clavé is dedicated in a first period to the advertising graphism, the illustration and the decorative arts.

"Homage to El Greco", ca. 1965. Mixed media on paper. Signed. Measurements: 66 x 50,5 cm; 78 x 62 cm (frame). The figure of El Greco occupies a decisive place in the work of Antoni Clavé. It was not a mere homage what he carried out in drawings, engravings and in a series of paintings of the sixties of which the excellent oil painting that occupies us is part, but a path of plastic and conceptual self-exploration. In this drawing he evokes the ruffed portraits and the elongated facial ovals of El Greco, although he transfigures the model, turning it practically into an abstract work. "The Gentleman with his Hand on his Chest" and "Portrait of a Painter" were often references for the Catalan painter, who also called upon the black and dark shades of the Cretan painter. The ruff has been transformed into a sort of pale garland that haloes the entire head. The whole suggests a spectral presence, which can be translated as a tribute to an artist who left an indelible mark on future generations. The work evokes the drama and spiritual intensity of El Greco's paintings, although Clavé translates them into a more modern and experimental language. Enclosed certificate of authenticity issued by Archives Antoni Clavé. Size: 120 x 100 cm; 150 x 130 cm (frame). This work is part of the abstract language that began to develop from the 1940s onwards. It is a collage whose basic characteristic is the conception of the pictorial surface as a whole, as an open field, without limits and without hierarchy. Thus, as we see here, the pictorial forms of experimentation, pure stain and gestural brushstrokes, are not limited to a composition but go beyond it, indicating to the spectator that they are forms, ideas or suggestions that go beyond the boundaries of the purely pictorial. This idea of rupture and freedom in pictorial language can be seen not only in the use of forms, but also in the introduction of elements such as collage. Antoni Clavé dedicated to the motif of the leaves of the trees in numerous compositions, especially in the sixties, when he experimented with the use of cut stencils evoking organic elements. Form and texture come together in this oil painting to suggest the image of a shady region that is both abstract and figurative. The handling of light and shadow is one of his achievements, making black silhouettes of lobed leaves and arabesques emerge through the superimposition of layers. Thus, abstraction becomes lyrical, evoking in some of its areas a kind of sumptuous brocade, creating ambiguous sensations between the natural and the artificial on an emerald green background. The title of this work, "leaf and stencil", suggests the idea of formal experimentation and palimpsest with the use of cut out stencils and sheets of paper, a technique that Clavé used, both in engraving and painting, to create works with a great richness of textures. The handling of light and shadow is one of his achievements, making black silhouettes emerge through the superimposition of layers. Likewise, lyrical and geometric abstraction intertwine on the surface, creating ambiguous sensations on a navy blue background.
